About the property

Exceptional 400 yr old restored Vigneron’s Hse in medieval wine village. Close to rivers, gorges, sea & amenities. Ideal location for families/friends/couples.

Spacious, high quality accommodation spread across a carefully restored Vigneron's house, facing a lush, very private courtyard garden, with mature trees, plants, flowers and plunge pool that wraps around an ancient barn. Just relax and soak up the French way of life, or alternatively stroll 3 minutes down the road to a Café wine bar called 'Dame Jane', selling light meals, wines, local cheeses, honey and charcuterie. You can also order your bread from here for the next day. There are at least 3 wine producers in the village offering wine tastings.

The property comfortably sleeps up to 8 people with 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, 2 kitchens and 2 lounges arranged across separate areas. There is a stunning upstairs terrace for outside dining that looks down over the garden, or the whole group can comfortably eat inside in an atrium lounge-kitchen. The accommodation is arranged over two floors offering privacy for families or friends sharing the gite. There is Wi-Fi and a TV with wide selection of DVD’s.

The accommodation makes an ideal base to explore the Languedoc (a quieter, untouched 'Provence') and is 20 minutes from spectacular rivers and gorges and 40 minutes from the coast, where you can find beach restaurants and bars year round. There are also many wonderful local restaurants in the vicinity serving superb local sourced food. Alternatively you can eat in one of the many seafood restaurants along the coast

The area is an excellent location for walking, bird-watching and many other outdoor pursuits and for the more energetic, the area offers, canoeing, golf, horse-riding, mountain biking, go-carting, paint ball, off road cycling and adventure parks nearby. There are numerous markets in the surrounding villages and towns and the renaissance town of Pezenas is 20 minutes away. If there's time, consider a visit to the historic quarter of Montpellier (1 hour), or the Roman amphitheatre at Nimes (1 hour 40 mins). The Languedoc offers a wealth of places to visit from Cathar castles, Roman towns, the Canal du Midi, coastal villages, local markets and wonderful beaches.

Last but not least, the region has been consistently voted one of the most exciting wine regions of France offering many opportunities to taste and buy a wide range of wines directly from the Domaines and Co-operatives.

About Helen le May

We moved to France in November 2002 with our son Christopher and added a black Labrador called Ella, on New Year's eve of the same year. Over the years we have had enormous fun not only renovating our 400yr old winemakers house and gite, with all its history (and challenges !), but also discovering the richness of the area and people. We have also enjoyed being part of a village with its many local fetes and seeing our son grow up in another culture.

Why Helen le May chose Faugères

We chose the Languedoc, a quieter unspoilt version of Provence, after falling in love with its diversity of landscape and beauty; fabulous beaches, rolling hills, waterfalls and rivers and Mediterranean coastline and vineyards as far as the eye can see.

Living in Faugeres in the heart of the AOC wine region has given us the chance to get to know some lovely Vignerons and to hear their individual stories of wine making ... and of course the chance to taste a wide variety of delicious local wines ! We love the laid back lifestyle, the 300+ days of sunshine and a location which gives us access to Spain and the Pyrennes, just 2 hours away.

What makes this house unique

Enjoy a timeless way of life in the tranquillity of a beautiful courtyard garden and pool. Visit the many local markets to buy fresh produce to cook at home, or buy wonderful seafood along the Etang de Thau.

The gite has been carefully restored and we have tried to retain much of its original charm and character. The property is well laid out over two floors, giving plenty of privacy for everyone. Whether for one or two families or a group of friends sharing, there is a lovely dining terrace off the kitchen or there are two lower terraces around the pool for everyone to gather.

Within easy reach of cool rivers and waterfalls, Cathar castles, Roman towns, the Canal du Midi, the Med, wine Domaines and Chateaux - we love the fact that there's something for everyone !

A wonderful family base

We were a family of four generations including a baby and had a really lovely time here. The two levels are almost two apartments in one and provided ample room for nine people, making use of the sofa bed. All that we needed for the baby was provided too - with cot and high chair. The house was spotlessly clean and full of character, while the plunge pool, garden and different patio areas provided sun and shade in lovely surroundings throughout the day. The hosts went out of their way to be helpful to us before we even got there and continued to do so when we arrived. You do need a car as there is relatively little within walking distance, but lots to do within easy travel distance - we had some amazing trips out. No air con but fans provided. Would definitely recommend. Enjoy!

Lovely spacious private gite in a quiet village

We really felt welcomed and supported by Helen our gite owner who lived near by. The accommodation was top notch. The pool was essential for cooling off in and meals on the balcony were a pleasure. A great base for exploring this part of the Langudoc: we swam in its rivers, drank its wine and relaxed in it sun.

Isle of Arran

Stunning garden & pool, lovely dining terrace, very helpful host

Helen went to a great deal of trouble to research and book a sea fishing trip for my husband and friends. The garden and pool are beautiful, private and sheltered and the dining terrace is a lovely place to eat both breakfast and dinner, we sat out till late watching the swallows. The house is spacious and comfortable and allows both family and friends to have their own space. The area is beautiful and we had some lovely meals out following Helens list of recommendations. Lots to see and do, we ran out of time. Overall a lovely place to stay.

The perfect holiday location!

We arrived following a 2 hour car journey on a very hot July afternoon. Initially, we were unsure exactly where the property was on the road but we were greeted by Helen's friend who led us through a gate in the wall into an amazing courtyard garden with pool which certainly has the wow factor. The house, which appears quite small from the outside, is spacious and welcoming and has everything you could possibly need for your holiday.

We tended to go out in the mornings and return to the house in the afternoon to laze around the pool; the garden is private ,quiet and a suntrap so the shaded areas of the garden were very welcome. The shaded upstairs terrace was where we ate most of our meals including breakfast every morning - there aren't many shops in the village but there is a bar which sells fresh croissants and baguette - don't leave it too late though as they only carry a small amount!

There is plenty to do in the area, the coast is only about 40 mins away, Serignan beach is lovely. We had a great day out kayaking at Roquebrun - remember to take a change of clothes as you will get wet!. A must is Pezenas, where throughout July and August they hold a night fete on a Friday evening, you can sample the local wines and food from market stalls in the main street and you can then explore the town walking through the narrow streets and see the work of local artisans as the shops are open till midnight.

Great Village house

We had a chilled rosé waiting for us upon arrival in one of the hotest days this summer. The house has all you need to make a great vacation, in the house and in the surrounding area. Great for two familys or for one family with kids that want their privacy.

We had the most amazing time Faugeres at Helens gite. Helen couldn't have been more attentive, the best host I've ever experienced - by far!! She couldn't do enough for us & is so lovely.

We were blown away by how beautiful the gite was, the garden is perfect for relaxing around the pool with a glass of wine in hand :) & has lots of shady areas to avoid the hotter times of day.

If you love wine tasting, this is the perfect region, there are endless vineyards & Vigneron's! We came home with car full of wine!!!

For anyone considering booking Helen's gite - BOOK IT!! I can't recommend it highly enough!

Local facilities:

We have an Epicerie within the village that sells bread, local produce wine and has a small Post Office counter. You can also eat light lunches here and taste wine.Our village restaurant 'Auberge Bel Air' is a 15 min walk from the gite. Herepian - 5 mins drive to shops, pharmacy and restaurants. Bedarieux - 10 mins drive to banks, restaurants, Monday market and supermarkets. Lamalou les bains - 15 mins, riding, thermal baths, casino, banks, pharmacies. Pezenas - 25 mins to historic, rennaissance town well known for its antique shops. Beziers - 35 mins with cathedral, shops and markets.


The Med is 40 minutes by car and the nearest beaches are Serignan Plage, Portiragnes Plage and Valras Plage.

Serignan Plage has miles of white sand which becomes Portiragnes Plage and has two rustic restaurants on the beach, where you can hire beds and parasols, and hear live music on some evenings. Valras is more built up with some shops and a choice of restaurants.

The Canal du Midi is also about 45 minutes away where you can take boat tours, cycle along the shady footpath or hire boats.


A great choice of airports are available to you; Beziers is our closest airport only 40 mins away - Ryanair. Montpellier (1 hr 10 mins by car) - British Airways and Air France and Easyjet. Carcassonne (1hr 15 mins by car) -Ryanair, Flybe. Perpignan (1hr 15 mins by car)- Ryan Air, Flybe. Nimes (1hr 30 mins by car) - Ryanair.

Further Details:

Lake Salagou - 30 mins to wind surfing, sailing.

Roquebrun/River Orb - 40 mins for canoeing and lovely historic village.

Gorges de Colombieres/Gorges d'Heric - 20/40 mins to two lovely waterfalls.

St. Guilhem le Desert - 1 hr 10 mins picturesque medieval village with ancient abbey.

In July and August every year the medieval town of Pezenas holds its 'Nuits Nocturnes' where the little shops in the old quarter stay open until midnight. You can taste wine, try different tasty bites, eat at restaurants or just wander through the little cobbled streets and soak up the atmosphere.

For outdoor ideas the Voie Verte Passa Pais is a super 76km long footpath and cycling path that was created from an old railway line, down the du Jaur valley, past Olargues to Mazamet in the Tarn. You can pick this up from Herepian a 5 minute drive from us, or at other points along the valley.

On the second Sunday of July every year our village Faugeres holds its own lively 'Fete du Vin' which attracts Vignerons from all over the Faugeres AOC and up to 5,000 people visit to taste wine, eat and buy local produce.
