Everything we wanted and more!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed in late September and early October and were absolutely delighted with our experience. The property is simple but very cozy and comfortable, and is the ideal location to get away from it all. The first thing that hits you is the peace and quiet, you are miles from anywhere and quite high in the hills, surrounded by chestnut, eucalyptus and pine trees. If you like things busy and bustling this is not for you. However, if you are searching for peace and quiet with a superb climate and a beautiful location, step this way!

Catherine was a perfect hostess, attentive and friendly, but without being in your face and her little dog Chuva was an absolute joy too. Her home cooking is of restaurant standard, we ate twice with her and had a lovely meal both times.

The local wildlife is literally on your doorstep, we could hear the wild boar in the undergrowth at night but never saw them, however there was an ever present abundance of small birds and birds of prey and we did catch a glimpse of a red squirrel too. There are deer in the area but we never saw them.

This property is ideal for walkers with good walking literally from the house itself. There are also many well marked and very enjoyable trails within 10-15 miles.

You will need a car, and be warned, the roads are very narrow although well maintained and thankfully relatively quiet.

The only downside for us was that we found some people in local towns a little surly and unhelpful. In their defense we spoke no Portuguese, but even so, a smile costs nothing!

All in all a fanatastic location with a lovely owner, everything we hoped it would be!

Little green paradise

  • 4 of 5

We’ve spend three wonderful weeks in this cosy and well equipped cottage in a very portugese and unspoiled area in the centre of Portugal.

Adventurous trips and walks in all directions on quiet and exciting roads in a rough and mountainous landscape with magnificent views.

We warmly experienced Cathy as a very pleasant and committed owner/hostess and an excellent cook of a wide variety of tasteful meals.

Would have loved to stay much longer but duties called us back to Holland.

One of our favourite trips so far

  • 4 of 5

My partner and I had the pleasure of staying in Cathy's cottage for an entire week this summer. The cottage is basic, but very well equipped, and located at the end of a tiny village in the Portuguese mountains. If you're looking for peace and quiet, look no further!

Some of our favourite things about the cottage:

- The terrace. We enjoyed most of our meals outside, soaking up the glorious sunshine and enjoying the views of the valley below.

- The shower. Hot water that never ran out, and excellent pressure.

- A very comfortable bed. So comfortable, in fact, that I slept 12 hours straight on our first night!

I believe Cathy's cooking is amazing, although sadly (due to slight over-catering on our side) we didn't get to experience this for ourselves. Next time though, we definitely will.

The only downside for me was the distance of the swimming river. From the pictures I assumed that it was very close by, when in fact it was about a 10-15 minute drive away. Not a major problem though!

All in all, our time there was absolutely glorious and both of us felt rather sad to leave when the final day came around. Thank you, Cathy, for a truly wonderful stay. I'm sure we'll be back in the future.

Fabulous honeymoon retreat

  • 5 of 5

We arrived very tried after our wedding and a long day travelling to be blown away by this fantastic little cottage. Cathy greeted us and a short while later brought our amazing chicken dinner followed by local bread and cheeses, with local wine and champagne because it was our honeymoon. The little treats and extras continued as did Cathy's truly fantastic meals, as and when requested during our weeks stay. The cottage had everything we needed and the peace and the views were spectacular. The cottage was spotless, lovely comfy bed, hot shower and a gorgeous little terrace. Cathy was very helpful and attentive, but not "in your face" and her little dog Schuva was such as sweetheart. High up in the mountains you do need a car, but the drives and local villages were real unspoilt Portugal. I really hope we get the chance to go back to this amazing, beautiful retreat, we really did not want to leave. Well worth every penny.

The real Portugal

  • 5 of 5

Arrived to a lovely welcome from Cathy on the 7th. Accommodation very clean and everything you need was in place. The setting for the cottage is stunning, extremely peaceful and quiet. Cathy cooked for us on a couple of the days and we would highly recommend this. Food was delicious. Lots to see and do in the surrounding area, good access to both the hills and the coast. Would definitely recommend this to anyone who really wants to get away from it all.

Idyllic

  • 5 of 5

What we wanted was peace and tranquillity and it came in abundance! House was perfect for two (if not more) and was well equipped. The owner was very welcoming and makes Portuguese meals upon request which were delicious and very reasonably priced. We would highly recommend one especially after a long days walking. The local villages all had small cafes which are lovely, and there are lots of places to eat locally, as long as you have transport! Watch out for the wild boar which feed in the hedges below the house. Overall .......Wonderful!!

Location

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Porto at 170 Kilometres Nearest Barpub : Colmeal at 4 Kilometres Nearest Ferry : Santander Spain at 1000 Kilometres Nearest Train : Coimbra at 54 Kilometres Nearest Motorway : Arganil at 15 Kilometres Nearest Restaurant : Gois at 15 Kilometres Nearest Ski : Serra de Estrella at 150 Kilometres Nearest Beach : Figueira do Foz at 60 Kilometres Car: necessary

Coast/Beach:

An hour and a half to the Atlantic coast. Figueira da Foz is a popular resort, with wide sandy beaches, good surfing and restaurants ranging from beach side seafood shacks to quality Portuguese fayre. In the summer, the local river (15 minutes by car) has a bathing spot by a waterfall with picnic area and barbecue. Gois (30 minutes) has white sandy beaches with cafes, bars, public barbecue areas and a shady tree-lined park.

Travel:

Car hire is strongly recommended, either from Porto or Lisbon airport, or Coimbra (the nearest city, just over an hour's drive away).

Fast trains between Porto and Coimbra take approximately an hour and fifteen minutes, and about 2 hours between Lisbon and Coimbra.

Distances:

15 km to nearest towns.

Coimbra: just over one & half hour's drive.

Porto airport: two and a half hours' drive.

Lisbon airport: three hours' drive.

Bucaco National Forest is also about an hour away.

Lousa is an hour away (a nice scenic drive but with windy roads).

Further Details:

Local activities include river bathing, canoeing, hiking trails, fishing, horse riding.

Coimbra is the home to one of the world's oldest universities, sitting on the hill top. Well worth a visit is the Biblioteca Joanina, the early 18th century library with its gilt wood rooms lined with 300,000 books. Bucaco National Forest is an hour away, with its exotic trees creating shady walks where there are hermits' grottoes to be found. The amazing Palace Hotel is in the centre where you can have a good meal overlooking the gardens and forest. There are more interesting and beautiful places to visit, details of which can be found in the cottage. I recommend that you bring an up-to-date guide book. Lousa is a good place to shop locally: Where there are three supermarkets.

Just outside Lousa there are the ruins of a castle, where there are many interesting walks around the hills. Also there is a natural swimming pool near the O Burgo restaurant where you can have a well-cooked meal of local produce. Coimbra, of course, is the best place to shop with its three large shopping centres. Gois (30 mins), has a 24-hour health centre, chemist, post office, bank, butcher and two mini supermarkets. Arganil (50 mins) is larger with an Intermarche and Lidl, etc. Colmeal (7 mins) has two bars, one with a shop where you can buy almost everything for your everyday needs. Cabreira, in the other direction (10-15 mins on your way to Gois), has the nearest restaurant. For guests who may be interested in buying property out here I can put you in touch with Portuguese translators, solicitors etc.
