About the property

Rustic farmhouse in a rural setting in La France Profonde

La Garrigue is located in the delightful, spectacular Aveyron 4.5 miles and 500m up from Entraygues Sur Truyere. The rustique farmhouse offers breathtaking views over the Lot Valley and a scattering of picturesque hamlets with architectural wonders. It is less than 1 hour's drive from some of the most beautiful towns and villages in France. Amongst these are CONQUES and ESTAING. A little further away you find the viaduct of MILLAU, the tallest bridge in the world which forms the gateway to the south of France. From here you can visit the cheese caves of ROQUEFORT or drive up the TARN GORGE to some of the most famous caves and underground rivers in the world. If you would rather stay around the house, CAMPOURIEZ with it's beautiful stone church and its tabac/restaurant/hotel is only 40 minutes walk away. A jewel not to be missed is the hamlet of BEZ BEDENE situated on a knife-like ridge. The nearest town ENTRAYGUES is 15 min down the road. Here you can find a bank, shops, restaurants and the tourist office. A bit furher afield, approx 30 min away, there is a larger town ESPALION where they have a gigantic market on Fridays. On the way to Espalion, you have one of France's most beautiful villages ESTAING. In the opposite direction along the river LOT, you have CONQUES which is on UNESCO'S list of conservation areas and one of the main stopovers on the pilgrim route.

The area around the house and the pool is perfect for relaxing/sunbathing, alfresco meals or star-gazing. The property is situated at the end of a 400 m long country track which is occastionally used by local farmers to visit their cattle, so it is completely private. The nearest neighbour is approx. 400 m above the property. The field below the house is used by a local farmer for his 2 thoroughbred horses who are very sociable. There are 3 bedrooms on the 2nd floor - 1 double, 1 with two single beds and 1 with bunk beds. The main bathroom is also on this floor. On the first floor there are 2 futher bedrooms - 1 double and 1 with 2 single beds. There is also a separate WC and a bathroom. The games room with a pool table, a bed-settee and kitchen area, is located on this floor. The main kitchen/dining/snug area is located on the ground floor. The dining table can seat 16 people. There is a fire place in the snug area. The lounge is also on the ground floor. Off the kitchen and the loungs is a 30 m2 balcony with stairs leading down to the pool area. The pool is 10 m x 6 m. There is ample space for sun bathing around the pool. The former wine cellar has been converted to a summer kitchen, a bathroom and a laundrette with washing machine and tumble dryer. A fridge-freezer is also located here. Should you feel the urge to hide from the sun, there is a table tennis table in the summer kitchen. The original wine cellar is located further down. Underneath the balcony, there is a shaded area which is ideal for a game of boule. The horses can be fed from here. Above the pool towards the road there are approx. 100 lavender bushes. Beyond the pool area, there is a playground with swings. There is also a larger playground near the local hamlet. The area is a walker's paradise with numerous walks starting from the house. Mountain bikes can be hired from the local town of Entraygues. There is a beautiful lake approx 20 min drive from the house with a play area, a beach, a BBQ area and a volley ball field. Tennis can be played at a local camp site down the road. Fishing and canoeing takes place in Entraygues. Lake fishing can be arranged. There is an excellent riding center 10 min from town. Approx. 1 h away, there is a small zoo. A bit futher afield a walk in the tree tops is possible. Most of Frances most beautiful villages are located within 2 hours from La Garrigue as is the tallest viaduct in the world, the Millau bridge, crossing the entire valley of Tarn. Wine tasting takes place 15 min from the house. At this particular vinyard you can sample some of France's best natural wine without any chemicals or additives. It is possible to take part in the "vendange" the grape harvesting from mid Sep to end Oct. Here you can learn all about wine making by the local wine producer who is one of the 10 top wine producers of natural wine in France.

Every season has its charms: The summer with its long, hot summer days and plenty of activities. The autumn is the chestnut- and mushroom season. During this time, there are chestnut festivals in all the local villages. The winter season where everything dies down to come back into life in the spring. The climate here is very comfortable and doesn't have the same damp, penetrating cold as in the UK during the winter, but cold enough for the local ski resorts to stay open, the nearest being approx 1 h 30 min away

About Randi Winsnes

Hi there, My name is Randi Winsnes Dawson. I was born in Michigan, USA in 1953 and moved to Norway with my family in 1958. I'm a qualified language teacher and technical translator. After having spent a total of 4 years in Paris as an au-pair and later a student, I dreamt of making France my home. I'm not quite there yet although I spend as much time at La Garrigue as I possibly can. During the holiday season, I have my own living quarters in the former cow-shed and I'm always available for information, support and advice and try and do my utmost to make my guests feel welcome. Should you be interested in Learning a bit of French during Your stay, I am happy to oblige. Otherwise, I stay out of sight unless I'm needed.

Randi Winsnes purchased this farmhouse in 2004

Why Randi Winsnes chose Aveyron

The reason for buying La Garrigue was because I wanted something typically French in deep France away from the hustle and bustle and too many tourists. I also chose the property because of the surrounding area and the view which is spectacular. I wanted something with character and potential and La Garrigue had plenty of both. The area is completely unspoilt, and for those who want a bit of peace and quiet, it's ideal. The nearest town is only 15 min away and there are numerous interesting places to visit and a good variety of activities such as walking, swimming in the lakes, cycling, canoeing, riding and skiing in the winter. Other activities include star-gazing, painting, photographing or simply chilling by the pool or playing table tennis or darts. I have loads of books, games, DVD's

What makes this farmhouse unique

La Garrigue is approx. 2 h 30min from Toulouse airport, and easy and comfortable drive with the opportunity to visit some of France's most beatiful villages on the way to your final destination and 15 min from the nearest town Entragues sur Truyeres. There is a fantastic restaurant in the hamlet of Campouriez at walking distance. La Garrigue is a great base for visits to some of the most beautiful towns and villages in France and also the tallest bridge in the world Millau just over an hour away. There are several lakes with beaches near by. In the winter you can enjoy cross country skiing on the Aubrac plateau or slalom at Le Lioran just over an hour's drive away.

All my guests have told me that La Garrigue is the best equipped gite they have ever been to. The fact that it actually has 3 kitchens including a summer kitchen/shower/WC on the pool level is a great bonus. What more can I say? Come and see for yourselves.

A wonderful holiday in a typical French farmhouse

  • 5 of 5

After an easy, 2 hour from Toulouse airport driving through some of France's most beautiful villages, we arrived at our final destination, La Garrigue in the dark and woke up to spectacular, breathtaking views and bird song. It felt like paradise. What a well kept secret! This was La France Profonde and exactly what we were looking for. Everywhere we looked, we could see traces of the old vinyards as Aveyron apparently used to be the best wine district in France until the grapevine pest put a stop to it. The house is 500 m above sea at the end of a 400m long private drive occasionally used by local farmers to check their cattle. La Garrigue (shrub land) is a typical French farmhouse and the owner Randi has done her utmost to maintain its authenticity in a shabby-chique manner with bare floorboards and stone walls, but with all the necessary comfort. We were totally charmed by the house and its surroundings and used it as a base for numerous walks and excursions to nearby villages, amongst them Estaing and Conques on the pilgrim route and pictoresque towns like Espalion and Laguiole. We walked up to the nearest hamlet Campouriez to enjoy a real cordon bleu meal at the local restaurant. The nearest town Entraygues has everything you could wish for and there's no need to go further a field for your shopping. Our only problem was that the nearest boulangerie is also here, so we couldn't just nip up the road for our croissants or baguettes, so Randi gave us a lesson on how to bake bread which I've actually continued with. We've had the most wonderful, relaxing holiday and would very much like to return in the summer so we can make use of the pool.

Merci beaucoup Randi for making us feel so welcome. A BIENTOT

A memorable family holiday

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at this beautiful rustic farmhouse. It is a comfortable and spacious house with plenty of bathrooms and bedrooms and is well equipped with all you could possibly need and more. Randi is a wonderful host who was so helpful and friendly but always respected our privacy. The house is perched on a hillside and the kitchen leads onto a balcony which overlooks the valley making for very special al fresco meals especially sipping some chilled local wine as the sun goes down. This is a great destination if you want peace and quiet, its a fantastic part of France, not so touristy as others and there are lots of interesting trips to be made not far from the house. A special thank you to Randi for making Pauls birthday so special with music, dancing and fresh pizzas made from the on site pizza oven! What a magic evening. Fenella, Paul, Jude and Mae

Fabulous family holiday gite!

  • 5 of 5

The photographs don't do this property justice. When we arrived it was a sunny day and we caught great warm wafts of lavender from the many bushes around the swimming pool as we got out of the car. Randi is a lovely host. She is welcoming and friendly, there when you need her, but in no way obtrusive. Views over the Lot valley are fabulous as you sit on the balcony overlooking it all. Everything works, and it had everything we needed as a family, especially for me, the keen baker. A flour mill down the hill (Gilles Malpel) and a wood fired bread oven in the courtyard of the house. Beds were comfy, and the arrangement of rooms suited our 2 families very well. We loved our stay there and the region. Cannot thank Randi enough for her hospitality, beautiful house, and friendship. An absolute pleasure.

Special interest holidays:

La Garrigue is ideal for painters, photographers, writers, star-gazers, walkers or for those who just want to "chill" by the pool on those hot summer days and take in the fabulous views and breathe the fresh air. Sipping some of the local wine that you can taste near by. If you are looking for peace and quiet in a rural setting with spectacular scenery, you have come to the right place. There are numerous walks starting from the front door and the nearest restaurant COUSTOUBI is only 20 min walk away. The nearest town, ENTRAYGUES, is 15 min drive down the road. In addition to shops, a bank, a post office, the tourist info centre and numerous restaurants, bikes and canoes can be hired from here.

A jewel not to be missed is the tiny hamlet of BEZ BEDENE approx. 15 min drive away with its church, museum, exhibition gallery and bar. For those wanting a break from the pool, there is a lake 20 min away with a beach, a playground and BBQ area. Here you can hire pedalos and canoes and there is a restaurant overlooking the lake.

La Garrigue forms an excellent base for visiting some of France's most beautiful villages, the nearest one being ESTAING on the way to ESPALION 30 min away.

Other places of interest include:

CONQUES - 40 min away, which is one of the most famous stops on the pilgrim route.

LAGUIOLE - same distance, famous for its knives.

Coast/Beach:

Should you feel like going further a field to the coast, 3 hours away, you will drive across the 8th wonder of the world, the MILLAU bridge, the tallest in the world, well worth a visit as is the town itself. Once in this area, the TARN GORGE offers several caves and subterranean rivers. Here you can also hire canoes.

Travel:

The nearest airport is Toulouse approx. 2h15min away. Here, there is a good choice of car hire companies.

Places to visit on route are: ALBI with its red brick cathedral and the Toulouse Lautrec gallery, NAJAC, ST ANTONIN, VILLEFRANCHE DE SAUVETERRE, just to mention a few. RODEZ, the nearests big town to La Garrigue is 1 h away and the old town also merits a visit.

Food shopping:

There is a good selection of food shops and a small supermarket in Entraygues. These are shut between 12 and 14 h. For a substantial shopping, SUPERU on the way to Espalion has everything you could wish for and stays open ALL day. There is also a huge market in Espalion on Fridays and a smaller one in Entraygues on the same day.

Further Details:

The nearest restaurant is 'Le Coustoubi' in CAMPOURIEZ. They have a set menu where you can sample some of the local dishes cooked to perfection and wine from the local vineyards. The whole area used to be one of the most important wine districts in France until the1860's when the grapevine pest killed off most of the vines. The local natural wine producer Nicolas Carmaran is slowly but surely bringing the grapevines back to life and is more than happy for people to come and participate during the harvesting season - a wonderful experience I can assure you, with free meals and as much wine you can drink. During this time, mid Sep - end Oct. La Garrigue serves as a chambre d'hotes - B&B for those interested.

Useful information:

Most shops are shut mid-day.

Always make sure you have cash available as not all restaurants take cards.

Use the Mini-banks in the larger towns as the ones in the smaller towns are unreliable.

Use the few/many French words you know and you will get a lot further.

There are no doctors in the area who speak English.
