Why Anthony Thompson chose Ciovo

We love the Dalmatian coast and wanted to own a property that we could use for holidays and make a small income from.

We only rent the upstairs apartment. The bottom apartment is for our use during the off season, this means that guests between May and September get the villa and garden to themselves.

A little piece of peace

  • 4 of 5

The air of peace at Villa Melissa is truly magical. Set in a delightful garden, edged by pine trees and with spell-binding sea views, there are plenty of balconies and terraces to sit and absorb the atmosphere. We saw a pod of dolphins, one morning.

The apartment itself is small and basic but clean and entirely adequate. Steps lead down to a series of swimming platforms which felt like our own private sun-bathing spot - the Adriatic, our own private pool!

Okrug Donji is small and basic, too. But the local shop sells a surprisingly large range of goods and the bar on the little beach is a lovely spot to watch the sun go down. Donji is slightly isolated, but not far from Okrug Gornji, with its bars and restaurants, and Trogir. We travelled by public transport and, once we'd mastered bus timetables, we travelled quite well.

Anthony and Mia were so helpful and contributed to a lovely holiday.

I do hope to have the privilege of staying at Villa Melissa again.

Simple, tranquil apartment with great views

  • 5 of 5

Villa Melissa is a lovely base to stay for a week or two, provided you are OK with steps. It is on an island which is easily reached by road from Split airport and has views across a strip of the Adriatic to the mainland. There are two balconies and two terraces, so you can always find somewhere to sit in shade or sun, and if it happens to be pouring you can always lie in bed and watch the thunderstorm over the sea. In one direction the view is over the sea to the shipbuilding yards in Trogir, in the other the slopes of the mainland with terracotta roofs and church steeple. At night, apart from the occasional party boat, it's very quiet and still - just the birds, the call of the Scops owl and the lights over the sea.

There are steps down to the sea, passed other villas, or you can take a short walk to the quiet local beach. There's another good quiet beach, with a restaurant with fantastic views (Konoba Draga) about 10mins drive away, and busier beaches also within easy car/bus reach. Good swimming. It's a good base for trips to Trogir, Split and the Kastel towns.

The property is simple, clean and well-maintained. The inside kitchen, bathroom and living spaces are small but have everything you need. Lovely terraces and balconies outside, with gardens on at least three levels. Anthony (the host) gave us good tips by email, and Mia (the manager) was welcoming and helpful.

Charming apartment with stunning sea view

  • 5 of 5

This was our first trip to Croatia and we were lucky with both the weather and accommodation. The apartment is nicely laid out similar to a seaside English chalet, with two bedrooms. There was also a pleasant dining conservatory underneath the apartment.

However, what really made our stay was the superb terrace and balcony areas and the simply amazing sea view that accompanied them.

The apartment itself is just 105 steps up from the sea (my son counted them!) and Okug donji village has a nice beach and shop nearby. The caretakers spoke little English but were friendly and lived just two minutes away. All in all, very satisfied and would come again.

Location

Coast/Beach:

For a quick dip the sea is just a min walk away down some steps, however there is a pleasant beach with bar approximately 10 mins walk down the road. A little further away are a number of little coves and beaches.

Travel:

We are ideally situated just 20 mins drive from Split airport and for those arriving by ferry we are about 45 mins from Split port. Car hire is easily available from Split airport however regular buses service the journey from Okrug Donji to Trogir.

Distances:

The villa is approx 10 mins by bus/car from the medieval city of Trogir, which links to the mainland via two bridges. Known as 'little Venice' and considered to be the cultural centre of Dalmatia, this spectacular town was declared a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1989. A further half an hour journey takes you to the city of Split, known for its ancient Diocletian Palace (UNESCO), and a great place from which to explore islands such as Brac and Hvar.
