We were a group of 10, 23-24 years old – and had a fantastic holiday!

The villa was everything we wanted and more and it really was one of the best holidays we have been on. We arrived to be greeted by Maria, the villa owner. Maria could not have been a more welcoming hostess, with a BIG smile on her face and made us all feel at home and welcome immediately.

The owners do live onsite, which should not be off-putting because this was not an issue at all. We admittedly did enjoy the nightlife, rolling into the villa at the early hours of the morning which did not phase Maria or Victor at all – Maria was insistent we should be having fun. If anything, it was helpful having them onsite in case we had any questions, e.g. taxis etc.

The property itself was absolutely stunning - approached through grand electric gates, which made it feel very secure with lots of room for our hired cars. The grounds were beautiful and well maintained, a great outside area for dinner with a large BBQ built into the wall, a games room with a pool table, football table and darts which provided hours of fun and a pool area which was cleaned regularly and a perfect size – also include inflatables and pool games.

Inside, the villa was stunning. There was loads of space, and everyone said each bedroom was perfect – there were no complaints. The kitchen was big and we managed to cook some meals in and had plenty of space to do so. Plenty of pans, glasses, cutlery etc.

The location was great! We hired cars as we like to have days out and took advantage of the water park and all of the gorgeous beaches in the surrounding area. We were not intending to go out as much as we did, but did go out in Lagos most evenings – the nightlife was fantastic, with a variety of people and great bars with live music and somewhere to go after for a dance. Lagos, is beautiful for a meal out as well – do not think this is a 18-30’s destination, it really does cover all basis.

All in all, this was the perfect villa, in the perfect location with the perfect hosts – we did not have 1 complaint! We would like to say a BIG THANK YOU to Maria & Victor and we hope to return again.

Excellent for large parties/family with car/s

  • 4 of 5

The villa and garden are spacious, and very clean with the extras of the games room and excellent outside dining and BBQ area, as well as the lovely pool and seating under the balconies.

Every room has efficient air conditioning - the quietest we have experience and electric outer blinds that keep the rooms cool and dark when you want them to be. There was a very efficient boiler somewhere because there was always hot water for showers even when we were all taking them at the same time!

The kitchen was equipped with a very good fridge freezer with cold water and ice, plenty of storage and worksurfaces. For us, in a hot climate the f/fz and dishwasher are essential when we are on holiday with so many ( our 4 - more or less! - grown up children and partners) and these were good, but we did struggle a little with the limited number of some items of crockery/wine glasses etc which mean't we had to keep taking them out of the dishwasher and washing them (5 mugs for 10 people doesn't really work!!) but this was a minor inconvenience...

Maria is extremely helpful if you need some information, but it is also worth doing a bit of research before you get there and print out a local map and details of anywhere in particular you may want to visit etc as our transfer company and some of us walking back to the villa at the start, were misdirected by sat nav/google maps ! A car/s is essential as in the heat of the day the 35/40 mins walk into or back from the town centre by the Marina is'nt easy. We did walk at night a couple of times and hoped to get a taxi back, but in high season taxis are sparse and don't even take bookings for shorter fares - they want to go out of Lagos to Praia de Luz or to the airport. The queue at 11pm the evening we looked was about 120 people!... We walked!

There were two good local restaurants just down the road towards town and a stroll out the top took us to the local golf resort , which was pleasant for drinks, so although everyone would have preferred to go into town more , we enjoyed a few nights closer to the villa to make the walk easy.

Our overall impression is that a great deal of thought and expense has gone into many aspects of the villa and it only needs a few minor details sorted - new showerheads, shower screens and a few hangers and more kitchenware - to make this exceptional !

If someone doesn't want to drive all the time, it's worth trying to find a taxi/transfer company who will be available to book all week.

Owner's Response: Dear Guest, Thank you very much for your review but there are a few points we would like to make clear: 1. "Limited number of some items of crockery/wine glasses etc" The kitchen equipment, as you could see, includes: - 12 meal dishes - 12 soup dishes - 12 dessert dishes - 36 water / juice glasses - 10 wine glasses - 5 mugs and 7 cups for tea and coffee As you were 10 people, the "items of crockery/wine glasses" were enough! They were probably not enough the day you invited 4 friends to join you in the villa, even so, you were supplied with the dishes and glasses you requested. Furthermore we kept asking you if all was fine and if you needed extra things. 2. "Our transfer company and some of us walking back to the villa at the start, were misdirected by sat nav/google maps" The location in maps is quite near, but the address is not totally accurate. We are waiting on Owners Direct website administrators to amend the Address / GPS coordinates. 3. "A car/s is essential" Yes, we recommend a car/s (a big family like yours with 10 people would need 2 cars). A villa like Villa Minerva (Plot with 2500sqm) cannot be found in the town centre. 4. Problem with taxis As you would understand, in high season it is difficult to have taxis for the amount of people that are in town, but this is something that transcends Villa Minerva accommodation / performance! 5. "It only needs a few minor details sorted - new showerheads, shower screens and a few hangers" - Shower heads have been replaced (but you should have told us and we would do it right away) - All the bathrooms have shower screens except the round bathtub which would look very ugly with it - that is why we did not put one there in the first place. - About the hangers, we thought they were enough for the amount of clothes people normally bring for holidays and also because nobody complained before. But once again, if you needed, you should have asked for and we would have provided - we queried you several times if you needed anything else. In what concerns Villa Minerva, your holidays were only not "exceptional" maybe because you gave too much importance to "minor details" that you never gave us opportunity to sort for you, although we asked you all the time what could we do to make it better!

An excellent, spacious house with friendly owners

  • 5 of 5

This is an excellent property that exceeded all expectations. The house is in a nice area, a little outside of the town and away from the beach but different to the usual villa complexes. Contrary to the description, it's a 20 minute walk to the outer wall of Lagos old town and 30 minutes walk up a steep road to the beach. What you get however for being a little further out is a lot more space.

Approached through electric gates, the driveway sweeps up to the main entrance and round to the pool area. Fruit trees of many varieties line the driveway and gardens and the grounds are very well maintained. The pool is a good size and very clean with lights in the evening and is bordered by a large lawned area. There are 2 seating areas, one with a table to seat 8 and a large barbecue area with charcoal barbecue, pizza oven and sink.

Inside, the house is very impressive with a grand staircase, large bedrooms and spacious communal areas.

We had a few niggles (not enough wine or champagne glasses, poor knives for food preparation, mismatched cups for the number of occupants) but nothing that really detracted from the quality of the property and easy problems for the owners to resolve.

As a visitor there are also a few things that you really need to be aware of:

1 - The owners live on site. They try their best not to interfere and we didn't find this an issue at all. They're a really nice couple and happy to help with any problems.

2 - The owners rescue dogs. If you're dog lovers as we are then you'll admire this but some people may not like the family dog wandering round when you're eating or the occasional barking from the rescue dogs that are kenneled at the bottom of the drive.

3 - One of the 5 bedrooms doesn't have an en-suite. This is countered though by this being the largest room and the fact that an extra bathroom is just at the bottom of the stairs.

All in all, we loved this property, the owners, the dogs and the area. It would possibly have been nicer to be a little closer to the town but we'd probably have had to compromise too much on space.
