About The Owner

Hi, my name is Berna, I live in Ireland with my husband Charly, we both love Spain and speak the language. We spent 3 years searching for our ideal home in the sun and we bought villa Cuba Libre in 2006.

Our favourite city in Spain is Seville and we visit every year usually for the Feria in April, to visit the sights and to eat Tapas. We also go to the Feria of Horses in Jerez in May.

We love to spend time in Cuba Libre as it offers total relaxation.

We are very active and love to walk, cycle in the area and to swim on La Barrosa Beach.

We go to the market of Chiclana and buy fresh locally grown vegetables, fresh fish and meat for the BBQ.

The Owner purchased this villa in 2006

Why The Owner chose Chiclana de la Frontera

We bought the villa which we named after our favourite drink, Cuba Libre (ingredients are: Cacique rum, Coca Cola, drops of Angostura Bitters, juice of half a lime and ice). We added a pool and patio garden with a built in BBQ.

This year we put in a Wood Burner which adds warmth and cosiness to the villa during the winter.

It is in the perfect location to get away from the hustle and bustle of life and relax at the same time. Chiclana is only 5 minutes drive away. Easy access to Seville, Cadiz, Jerez and Malaga.

The village of Pago Del Humo has a great range of bars/restaurants serving authentic food at very reasonable prices. It has a pharmacy, mini supermarket with daily fresh hot baked bread.

What makes this villa unique

Cuba Libre is convenient to a magnificent coastline that stretches for miles with golden sand and promenades, the beaches are never crowded and you have the choice of the more commercial or the tranquil stretches of unspoilt coast. The nearest beach is La Barrosa about 10 minutes by car. Water sports are popular here Trafalgar Surf, in Conil can offer you lessons, equipment hire and general help on where to go for the best surf.

This relatively unspoilt area is where the Spanish choose to take their holidays.

We can supply beach towels, and a set of golf clubs so visitors can travel light.

There are two bicycles available to rent at very reasonable rate to explore the countryside.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hi Berna,

I just wanted to say thank you once again for the use of your brilliant villa. We had the best time. Everything went really well and the sun shone for us. The boys still love the pool and pass hours happily jumping in and out. Joseph and I love the peace and quite and the privacy and the comfort !!! The wifi is simply the icing on the cake.

So once again sincere thanks, we had a ball.Sonia and Joseph Callaghan

Hi Berna

Just a quick message to say Thank You. We are just back from your beautiful villa. We had a brilliant time all went so well. The wifi was a great new addition, thank you. The weather didn't disappoint and we missed the terrible weather here so it was all good. Hazel was once again a god send when we tripped the switch and had no water ! One quick phone call and all was restored.

I know you must be aware of it yourself but it really is a slice of heaven.

So once again Thank You. Regards. Sonia, Joe and boys (June 2012)

A little piece of paradise

  • 5 of 5

We spent three fantastic weeks in this villa. The villa was spotlessly clean and well equipped. We had many evenings on the porch doing BBQs. The pool was well maintained. The villa is in a perfect location to visit many interesting places I.e Seville, Cadiz, Medina Sidonus, Vejer, Bolonia, Conil and Jerez. La Barrosa is definitely one of the nicest beaches in Spain. We will definitely be back next year.

Lovely Villa and a Lovely holiday

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely time at the Cuba Libre. Although it is a little difficult to find the first time we soon got our bearings. Also the roads approaching are narrow unmade roads, but don't let this put you off as it is a gem of a villa. Very private with floral lined walls all around. A big thank you to Berna for providing 2 extra sunbeds as there were 6 of us. The villa managers, Leigh and Richard were very helpful and we found the place in a spotless condition. The villa is close to lovely beaches at La Barrosa and Conil. Also within a few minutes drive of Chiclana for shops. We spent most evenings at the villa using the great BBQ. There are a couple of bars within walking distance but would recommend only doing this in daylight hours as an unlit area. We had plenty of fun at the villa though so didn't need to venture out at night. A few days were quite windy but laying on the sunbeds, the wind is not an issue at all. We moved the table under the front porch on the windy days and all was fine to eat there wind free.

Fantastic Holiday

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing holiday in Cuba Libre again, we spent a day in Seville, we went to Zahara De Los Atunes a small seaside town with a beautiful beach, great restaurants, and bars.

We also visited Alcala De Los Gazules a white mountain top village. Cuba Libre is perfect for a relaxing holiday and a gateway to many places of interest.

Enjoyable stay in a very untouristy location

  • 4 of 5

We had 11 nights in a well equipped villa with a very pleasant outside space including a pool, lounging area and barbecue.

There are a few issues when trying to manouvre the car due to limited turning space and the proximity of the neighbours gate resulting in a 6 point turn to get out of the parking space! We were also a little miffed to having to pay an extra €30 for the wifi, would it not be better to include it in the daily rate? That said, the starter pack was very welcome as we arrived very late on the first day and we did really enjoy our short stay in the villa that was very well located for Cadiz, Jerez and many beaches.

Perfectly located Holiday Hideaway

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for a week and found the place to be clean, bright and very sheltered away from the hustle and bustle but close to local beaches, restaurants and cafes only 10-15min drive to Conil & Playa La Barrosa. The pool was definitely a highlight of the property. we enjoyed many days out on the patio enjoying the sunshine and BBQ's. Would definitely stay here again.

Location

Car: necessary

Coast/Beach:

We have a magnificent coastline that stretches for miles with golden sand and promenades, the beaches are never crowded and you have the choice of the more commercial or the tranquil stretches of unspoilt coast. The nearest beach is La Barrosa about 15 minutes by car. Water sports are popular here and Laura at Trafalgar surf can offer you lessons, equipment hire and general help on where to go for the best surf.

This relatively unspoilt area is where the Spanish choose to take their holidays.

Travel:

Airports: Jerez de la Frontera is 30 minutes. Seville is 1h 15m Gibraltar is 1h 20m Malaga is 1h 5m via motorway. Use of a car is recommended: car hire is available from all airports. There is a local bus service to Chiclana, and from Chiclana there are connections to Cadiz, Jerez and Seville and all the beaches. Madrid is 6 hours drive.

Distances:

Pago del Humo has all facilities including a pharmacy, a mini supermarket general stores with daily freshly baked hot bread and many bar/restaurants. Chiclana is a 5 minute drive and is a large bustling town with old and new, it has a Tuesday market by the river not to be missed. Jerez famous for its sherry and horses is 40 mins drive, Conil a pretty seaside town is 10 mins drive, Medina Sidonia (over 3000 years old) a white village is 20 mins drive. Cadiz steeped in history is a 35 min drive

Further Details:

White villages set in the hills slightly inland are well worth a visit. Medina Sidonia, Vejer de la Frontera and Arcos are all worth a visit with their hilltop presence and magnificent views, cobblestone streets and beautiful town squares. Sample the Fiestas and Carnivals in the premier city of Seville. Isla Magica (like Alton Towers) is also to be found here for the kids amongst us! Also visit Puerto Santa Maria for the Waterpark. Visit and enjoy the tours around the Sherry and Brandy bodegas of Jerez and for the evening visit one of the many shows from the famous dancing horses to the fabulous Flamenco.

Explore Tarifa famous for its wind and kite surfing and of course its dunes, Roman ruins and plenty of white sands. You can also take a trip whale and Dolphin watching from here.

If you are feeling adventurous take the ferry to Tangiers Morocco and shop till you drop in the Souks also tantalize your taste buds with Moroccan cuisine and a culture with a difference.

Gibraltar with its history, rocks, caves, Barbary Apes and duty free shopping is a good day out, but be prepared for long delays at the border and remember to take your passport!! It's better and cheaper to park outside for the day, walk through and take the buses, a day pass is cheap and the open top buses are fun in the summer.

Take the ferry from Puerto Santa Maria over to Cadiz (the oldest port in Europe) steeped in history and charm with quaint Tapas Bars.

Street markets are a must and will be found on different days in all the local towns.
