You will be staying in our award winning village house which was designed by a renowned local architect. The property has retained the original Cretan Arch in the living area and also maintains many of the original features as seen in traditional houses throughout the area. It has a large roof terrace with breath taking views that look out to the sea and mountains and a very attractive courtyard. It has an open plan lounge and dining area with a well equipped kitchen. There is a twin bedded bedroom in the main part of the house with a bathroom with a shower. The second bedroom is across the courtyard and has a good size single bed with an en suite bathroom with a bath and shower overhead. There are day beds in the lounge area that can easily accommodate 3 more people. There is a surcharge of £10 per week per extra person staying over a party of 4 people.
About the Owner
We are Anglo/Greek sisters, Martha and Vanessa who are based in the UK.
Many friends have shared good times with us at our beautiful, rustic house in Milatos Crete. We ourselves have been coming to Milatos for summer holidays since we were children and love that the village still remains unspoilt after all these years.

Having had an unusually strenuous year, we needed a holiday that would allow us to recharge our batteries. We had stayed at Martha and Vanessa’s house in Milatos about 5 years ago and had nothing but good memories of the house, the village, the local tavernas and that particular corner of Crete, and so we took for us, the never before step of going back to a house we had already stayed in! We were not disappointed – the village house was just as we remembered it (wonderful courtyard, cool rooms, fantastic views down to the coast from the roof top suntrap!); the sleepy village; the excellent tavernas down at the seaside; and the wider area around Milatos which we were able to explore much more fully than on our previous visit (because we had ‘done’ most the major tourist attractions then). The last time we visited Eastern Crete was in September, this visit in June allowed us to enjoy the flowering thyme and sage around the coast, and Genista flowering in the mountains! Our physically demanding year is likely to continue for sometime yet, and so we have decided, having once broken our rule about never revisiting a place we have stayed in, of doing the same again, and so we will be back to that special haven in Milatos in September!

“Our house in Milatos was bought by our father. He chose it as a bolt-hole when he wanted to get away from Athens to spend some time with his family. His reason for this choice was the complete peace and the traditional, village setting. Growing up in this setting has given us some amazing memories. Milatos is still largely unspoilt and would provide the perfect escape for those of you looking for a spot away from the masses.”
Activity and Interests
Milatos beach is a 15 minute walk from the house. The waterfront is a shingle beach surrounded by picturesque tavernas. Should you desire a beach with sand, they are only a short drive. Sissi with it's idyllic cove and palm tree lined lagoon is ideal for a late afternoon swim followed by drinks at sunset- stunning!
Beautiful in themselves, Elounda and Plaka are perfect spots for swimming and have now been made famous by Victoria Hislop's novel 'The Island' which tells the history of Spinalonga
Heraklion Airport is 45 mins drive away. We recommend you hire a car for your stay. We have a local car hire company that we have used for many years who are very honest and reasonably priced. They will also meet you at the airport on your arrival. Please email us if you would like their contact information. There are also many car hire companies at the airport, including most of the multinationals.
Steeped in Ancient history, Milatos is mentioned in Homer's 'Iliad' as one of 7 Cretan cities to send forces to fight at Troy and was once an important city in the Minoan empire. Milatos Cave is 5 minute drive or a scenic walk up the hill. Lassithi Plateau, a historical setting with amazing views is a short drive and a 45 minute drive west brings you the vibrant and picturesque venetian port town of Agios Nikolaos. A 60 minute drive east and you arrive at the ancient site of Knossos.
This award winning house was lovingly restored by the owners 25 years ago after being found in a dilapidated state. With it's typical Cretan arch feature, that dates back over 500 years, the property is full of original and charming spots to sit and unwind with a book or a coffee. Milatos prides itself on being a typical Cretan village and is beautifully un-spoilt, this is one of the reasons many of our friends and guests return year after year. It will give you a real sense of tranquility and a slower pace of life, that exists in a traditional village on the island. You can purchase some of your grocery basics from the dry goods store in the village, or lower down at Milatos Beach. In the surrounding harbour area, there are also a number of small supermarkets. There are 2 well equipped supermarkets in Neapoli (Spa and Ariadni) which is a 25 minute drive through the mountain. Fresh food can also be bought from the open market in Neapoli every Thursday, please note that it starts very early and is usually finished by 11am. There is also a larger open market in Agios Nikolaos weekly on Wednesday mornings. On the seafront (15 min walk or 5 mins in the car), you will find some excellent Tavernas selling locally caught fish and lots of traditional Cretan dishes. There are also boat trips in the summer that depart from the small fishing harbour. Sissi is the neighboring village and a picturesque low key resort (about 15 mins drive), where you will find nightlife, bars and restaurants. We have detailed lot's of great local restaurants and places to visit in a book at the house.

“The house is about 400 years old and was derelict when it was first discovered by our father. In fact it was being used by a shepherd to house goats! The goats have gone now, although you may hear the bells of their descendants in the distance if you listen hard enough, as they scatter over the nearby mountain. In their place are some wonderful original features including a beautiful Cretan arch. The job of renovating it was a labour of love undertaken some 30 years ago and the architect won an award for his efforts to maintain the traditional structure and make it such a comfortable space. It has a magical quality with bags of rustic charm and is being modernised gradually with loving care.”

- Notes on accommodation: The roof terrace has no fencing around it, so we do not recommend small children are left unsupervised up there. Outside: The roof terrace offers spectacular views of mountains, olive groves and the sea with sun-loungers for relaxing and some private sun-bathing. There is also a table and chairs which make it the perfect spot for an early evening drink and later to admire a spectacular sky full of stars. The front garden faces the sea and has a sunny patio with use of a barbecue. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Bath towels and linen are included. Property is cleaned and linen/towels changed weekly. Other: The house is built in traditional Cretan style, around a very attractive and completely private courtyard, which includes a beautiful water feature. Both bedrooms and the lounge area can be accessed from here and a gated stairway leads up to the roof.
