A bright, clean simply furnished one bedroom third floor budget apartment (50m2). Large balcony with plants, sun and shade, with open residential view of Marrakech's fashionable Gueliz district. Kitchen with basic utensils. Within easy reach of the old medina (a 20 minute walk or 2 euro taxi ride). A few minutes walk to a wide range of Morrocan, French, Italian and now Asian-fusion restaurants, as well as traditional markets and a modern supermarket. Three minutes' walk from the newly opened La Renaissance restaurant with its Skybar offering panoramic views of Marrakech.

David and Michele are both Francophiles and have lived in France a collective 10 years. When not in Cambridge, we run intensive French residential courses in our house, 'Le Verger' (Dordogne) and its converted gite in the grounds La Petite Maison. Why The Owner chose Marrakech

We have always loved Morocco. We bought in Gueliz, the slightly more upmarket part of Marrakech, as we felt it was a quieter yet lively part of the city. You can get way from the bustle and noise of the medina and yet be within easy reach of it. We love the ease with which we can find French, Italian or even Thai as well as traditional Moroccan restaurants on our doorstep, and the surprising mix of chic and traditional shops. No one bothers or hassles you to buy too much in Marrakech ( except in the medina) and not at all in Gueliz.

What makes this apartment unique

The flat is in a great location in a side street just off Mohammad V Avenue, with open views from the balcony onto a residential area, and proximity to all the attractions, restaurants and sites.

Better value and amenities elsewhere!

I was looking forward to renting an apartment for a place to spread out, cook and get work done after 3 weeks of travel within Morocco. Unfortunately, this apartment and the rental process was far below my expectations. I left a night early so this place wouldn't be my last impression of Morocco!

Communication: The owners had limited wifi making it difficult to communicate with them about the rental. I paid for the rental but did not hear from the tenant 24 hours after renting and the day the rental was to start. Was finally provided move in details after I forwarded the receipt of rental to the owners. The agent was responsive at first and it was nice to have a landline.

Fees: I was not expecting a payment of 50 Euro to the local agent for handing over the keys and cleaning because it wasn't stated in the email quote to book and the owners did not have a rental agreement on file with VRBO. When I asked about the fee, the owners said it was listed on the rates page. A page that isn't required to view when a rate button is on the homepage and a quote comes via email. It was also never mentioned in any email communication with the owners.

Heating: Listing says it's heated by halogen heater which is fine if there was more than one heater for an extremely cold time of year in Morocco. The agent said he would send a technician out to fix wall heaters and never did. One halogen lamp burned out and I sent a note to the local agent and never got a response. When asked about it at checkout he said oh yes that message.

Overall: I paid more than other listings I saw because I liked the "look" of the apartment and area. I was disappointed as the apartment was more worn than the pictures and the building was dark and loud. Spend a little less or a little more for more space, better amenities, and a far superior experience.

Owner's Response: We are so sorry that this guest was not as happy as the majority of our visitors to the flat who adore the location and the flat itself. The guest only booked the day before arrival which is why we were briefly out of contact by wifi. We send out details as soon as we receive confirmation from the site that the rental has been paid. The local agent makes a special trip to meet the guest with the keys at the flat and is therefore remunerated for this- all this information about paying the agent 50 euros for key handover and cleaning is clearly stated on the site. When questioned we immediately drew this to the guest's attention in an email. The halogen heater is extra back-up heating in addition to the wall heaters/air conditioning units. It is regrettable that the wall heaters did not work and our agent did not manage the repair in the time she was there. Their complete overhaul is being undertaken.

Apartment close to Mohammed V, 10 mins taxi to the historic old town.

One bed apartment in Gueliz, close to Mohammed V, walkable to all the new town (and we walked to Jardin Majorelle), a 10 minute taxi ride to old town and Jma El Fna.

We chose the property as we wanted to have our own space as a family and cook for ourselves without paying Medina prices for a Riad. The property served our needs well, had hot water for cooking and showers, a big balcony (with a nice view), living area and small kitchen, was very accessible from the airport and by taxi, and was close to cafes and supermarkets. As we didn't spend a lot of time there in the day it met our needs well and our budget.

The only downside is that the property is a bit older, as such it was quite noisy at times (neighbours coming and going), traffic outside and thin walls. There's also some building work going on directly next door, which at certain times of the day was annoying. We purchased earplugs and this helped.

Overall, for the price this property was worth it, and I would recommend it for location, accessibility and views!

The owner was very helpful, replying to all my concerns and questions quickly. She provided information beforehand about the area and how to access the property from the airport. I appreciated the owners willingness to help with my questions and for me this would be a big plus side to the property.

Good for us

Great location ,very basic but good enough for us ,quite place and secure ,clean and comfortable for 2 people , wifi is a plus ,owner should spend some money and upgrade the flat...we didn't cook there .. we didn't want to...I gave it a 4 star for location and security and tranquility...But I will give Karen the carer a big 5***** great american lady ,she couldn't stop helping us and taking care of us from the minute of arrival to departure..lovely and very friendly lady ...Big thank you Karen ..also a big thank you for Somaya the house keeper who made sure all clean and well.... owner is very lucky to have them taking care of his property ... we will go back but only for Karen and Somaya ....Thank you both.

Basic but Comfortable

Good location , clean , quite , bright and secured ...Owner needs to spend some money to upgrade facilities .... will suite a couple comfortably ... Wi Fi internet is a great plus ... and I must mention KAREN the agent ...what a great and pleasant lady .... very helpful with a great personality she looked after us very well ...God bless you KAREN you are an angel , couldn't thank you enough.... we will be going there again very soon , also a very big thank you for SOMAYA the House keeper lovely and a very clean young lady... Pleasantly surprised!

We booked this holiday to use up air miles which were about to expire. We wanted somewhere hot in October with access to a decent swimming pool.

The apartment was basic but perfectly suitable for our needs, especially its balcony overlooking the city's residential streets and its efficient air conditioning.

The swimming pool at the Hotel Diwane was a matter of metres away (take a short cut through the hotel's cafe!) and at 140 dirhams per person per day for sun lounger and towel was very reasonable. The cafe (open air, semi-enclosed or fully enclosed) was ideal for lunch, offered a good basic snack menu and was manned by attentive staff.

But the real find was the three European-class restaurants in the same street as the Residence Nadia - two French and one Italian. After discovering them, we ate out every evening and so spent more overall than we had planned, but it was really worth it. We never ate a meal that was less than good and nearly all were outstanding.

We arranged an excursion to Casablanca through the resident agent who is an excellent tour guide and accompanied us to translate - like most Brits we pretend to speak French but in practise struggle somewhat!

We also took an open top tour of Marrakesh (it starts and finishes close to the Hotel Diwane) which we'd recommend to anyone visiting the city for the first time. Excellent way to get the feel of the city.

Overall an excellent destination for a holiday lazing with your books (or tablets!) by the pool, enjoying the occasional excursion and savouring good restaurants. But beware the Morrocan restaurants which appear very enticing but are not licenced!

The supermarket is a ten-minute walk away and stocks local produce alongside imported European foods familiar to all of us. If you have too much to carry through the hot and dusty streets, taxis are cheap and plentiful, but agree the price before setting off!

The unique town of Essaouira is 170km away on the Atlantic coast. Ask about individual excursions in the Atlas mountains at discounted prices with our local agent.

Travel:

Marrakech Menara International Airport is ten mins from the city (12km). A dedicated English speaking bus service leaves the airport every half hour (2 euros) and drops you virtually opposite our street. There is a taxi rank outside the Diwane Hotel (100 m) for the return. The best way to get around is on foot and very cheap petit taxi. Ask the local agent about airport pick up and drop off.

Distances:

The dramatic snow capped High Atlas Mountains, visible on clear days from Marrakech, are within easy reach for days excursions with its villages untouched by time. Ask about personalised visits for Residence Nadia guests.

Further Details:

In this upmarket area of Marrakech, banks, little souks, the very real Gurlize market, haute cuisine restaurants (four in our street) traditional Morrocan restaurants, cheap eateries, pizzerias and bars abound. Have traditional Morrocan pancakes (smena) with honey and freshly squeezed orange juice for breakfast nearby.The well stocked French-style supermarket Acima (10 mins walk) sells fresh fruit and veg, alcohol, Moroccan patisserie, spices etc. Just opened (2015) is the Carre Eden mall with most major outlets including French supermarket Carrefour. Marrakech’s best nightlife is right here in Gueliz with its chic Monte Christo nightclub and restaurant (live blues and jazz music) and the newly opened La Rennaissance Skybar for the highest view over the city. Check out the small less hassely souks and artisan shops right here in Gueliz but go to the Medina (5 mins in taxi) for a wider range ( and harder sell) . The Hotel Diwane's tiny shop sells Morrocan leather, ceramics, mirrors, metal work etc. at fixed prices often cheaper than the medina souk. Beside the flat is one of Marrakesh's best new French restaurants (l'Annexe) at very reasonable prices and 100 yards away is the much awaited Libzar restaurant. Yves St Laurent's delightful Majorelle Gardens is a 15 minute walk up the road and the perfect place to cool off and drink mint tea.
