The property is near village of Cascia and the small country town of Reggello. It is about 35km south-east of Florence, in the direction of Arezzo (about 50km). This is classic rural Tuscany - old stone buildings and lines of cypress trees scattered among olive groves, and vineyards. The mountains offer superb scenic walks, and there is easy access by rail or motorway to Florence, Arezzo, Siena and beyond. The nearby village of Cascia has good restaurants, bars, shops and banks, an excellent swimming pool, and the local town has many more facilities. There is enough to do on holiday here to keep you happy for a lifetime!

About Gwyn Pritchard

I'm Gwyn Pritchard, a professional composer (classical) and Professor of Composition at Trinity Laban Conservatoire, London. My wife Claudia is a singer and singing teacher. We are currently in our sixties and getting younger every year!!

Italy is obviously a passion, which is why we bought our property there. However, we love travel, not only to our Italian retreat or for concerts of my music in various countries, but also (when time and circumstances permit) to India, the far east and other far-off corners of the globe.

Other passions we share include painting and sculpture, the theatre, good wine, 'cycling and above all each other people's company.

We have two adult daughters - one a composer like her father, the other an actress (who you may well have seen on the TV).

Gwyn Pritchard purchased this cottage in 1980

Why Gwyn Pritchard chose Reggello

We chose La Villetta when we were looking for a place near Florence where we had many friends and so visited the area often. When we saw the stunning setting of the property we had no doubt it was the place for us, especially as it is ideally located for easy access to everywhere we wanted to visit, as well as for all the things we like to do.

When the neighbouring house, La Capanna, came on the market we bought it both to guarantee the continued privacy and tranquility of La Villetta and also to enjoy it's extensive garden.

What makes this cottage unique

We never cease to be amazed by the sheer beauty of the mountains behind the property, especially the ever-changing light on the trees, which we can enjoy whilst sitting or dining in the large garden. The mountains offer some of the best walking in Tuscany, but for anyone who wants less strenuous activity there are numerous artistic and architectural delights locally, or excellent restaurants serving delicious local fare. The wines and oils from this area are world renown and can be bought directly from the producers.

Guestbook comments from the owner

I must say that we had the most wonderful time at ‘La Capanna’, so relaxing and quiet – exactly what we expected. We slotted straight into local life – early morning walk to the fruit and veg. shop in Cascia, buy some great produce, back to the villa, lunch outdoors, glass of wine, read a book in the sunshine, cook dinner, more wine and relax listening to music - BLISS. Thanks very much for the opportunity of sharing your holiday home, making a great holiday for my wife and I. We will certainly consider a return visit in the not too distant future.

An ideally located comfortable, well equipped home

  • 5 of 5

We would thoroughly recommend this ideally located one storey home, with comfortable, spacious accommodation, well equipped throughout and excellently maintained. The owner was very easy to contact and provided every assistance in the booking process, including excellent notes about local facilities, travel opportunities, suggesting where to visit, how to get there, accommodating all tastes.

The views from the house were breathtaking, the gardens providing lovely outside eating and recreation facilities and parking our hire car was easy and secure. Food shopping was made convenient with the local supermarket in Cascia, and a bigger superstore in nearby Figline Valdarno.

Access to Firenze was easy by rail from Figline Valdarno, a 10 minute drive from La Capanna. There is a good network of local country roads, providing unlimited opportunities to experience the local Tuscan life in the numerous lovely, historic villages.

spacious and quiet

  • 4 of 5

we loved the location, beautiful and so quiet, the house is spacious, if you want to cook, there's everything needed. The only issue is the Internet, with the web cube we have to share with other guests. The supermarkets are close, there's a great outlet 20 mns from the house, and we are close to the interstate, great when you want to visit all Tuscany.

Wonderful time in a wonderful place

  • 5 of 5

We, and some friends, rented both houses, La Capanna and La Villetta, and both of them were well equipped, clean and suited us perfectly. We basked in the early autumn sun in the beautiful gardens, looking up into the amazing view of the Pratomagno Mountains; we visited Florence, Siena, Arezzo and no end of gorgeous little villages in the area near Reggello. We also ate and drank (a bit too much!) in five or six of the local restaurants. In short we couldn't have asked for more!!

We absolutely LOVED our stay here. The house was clean and comfortable and brilliantly equipped with everything you need for your stay. The views are amazing and the local town has great restaurants and a fab ice cream shop! We have already booked to go back!

Everything we hoped for - and more!

  • 5 of 5

I wanted a place that would be inspiring, beautiful, quiet, and made it easy for me and my wife to go to Florence, Siena and lots of other places, to see all the numerous things that there are to do and see in this wonderful corner of Europe. Well, La Capanna exceeded my expectations - it was fantastic!! The house itself was clean, comfortable and very well equipped (my wife loves to cook Italian style, and the oil from this part of Italy is among the best in the world - or at least, so the locals say!), but the real joy was the big garden which has stunning views into the mountains. The other great joys of the area included fabulous walks and a huge choice of really good local restaurants. I could go on forever - but I'll certainly go back to La Capanna.

Car: recommended

The sea is easy to reach by train or motorway e.g. Marina di Pisa or Viaréggio or Castiglioncello (120 to 150km) but the coast west of Florence can get very busy. We recommend a longer journey to Marina di Alberese (a nature reserve, so no shops etc.) just south of Grosseto (about 200km).

Nearest airports are: Florence 40km (very few flights), Pisa 127km (best option) or Bologna 141km. Car hire is recommended but not essential. For getting about locally there are 2 mountain bikes for the use of visitors.

The nearest village is Cascia at about 1km, and the small town of Reggello is 2km. Figline Valdarno (shopping, market and station) and Incisa (motorway) are both about 8km.

Further Details:

The local countryside is superb for walking. Other activities available locally include swimming, horse riding and fishing. There are plenty of shops close by for all basic necessities, including a modern supermarket, a chemist, banks and several restaurants. There is a local market on Saturdays. Excellent wines can be bought directly from local producers. For people interested in finding a real bargain in the world of ‘haute couture’ a nearby shopping centre called The Mall is home to the factory outlets of Gucci, Giorgio Armani, Yves Saint Laurent, and other top designer labels. Not far away there is a similar Prada outlet.
