LONG WINTER RENTAL FROM £475 per month plus electricity; 2nd time Winter visitor testimonial:

"We stayed at Finca Manolo for our second time, for 10 weeks, from December through to February and loved every minute of it. A home from home with everything we could ask for and more.

It's a real sun trap, beautifully positioned, up in the mountains with fantastic old charm throughout.

We enjoyed many BBQ evenings by the pool with the added bonus of an outside kitchen with the company of its two resident cats who are both adorable. We had an amazing time, lazing around and enjoying the peacefulness of the place. The village is very handy and you can get all amenities at very reasonable prices.

Great for couples wanting a romantic retreat or for families wanting to get away from it all but with the bonus of a beautiful pool (although not heated so quite cold in the deep mid winter!) and a hot spa that overlooks the mountains but also very private.

The owners are always extremely helpful with family on hand if needed.

We hope to come back again someday, we absolutely loved it there." Linda and Isaac, New Zealand.

About Sue

My husband, daughter and I are originally from Bristol in the South West of England although we haven't been back since 2003! Shortly after buying our farmhouse here in Andalucia, (originally intended for holidays) we moved out lock stock and barrel - plus 2 fat bemused English cats. We just couldn't resist the pull of sunny blue skies and the slower pace of life! Our two cats were soon joined by 4 kittens, 2 puppies a baby goat won in a local bar (that's another story!) and a truly stubborn mule! My parents then retired and followed us within a few short months. My father says it reminds him of England in the 1950's when people had more time for one another and priorities were different.

Why Sue chose Colmenar

We first came across this beautiful area back in 2000, at the end of a fruitless search for a holiday home on the coast which is where we had thought at that time we wanted to be! A chance remark took us inland to a whole new world. It's not just the spectacular scenery, the mountains, clean air, fresh smells, almond blossom, ancient olives, wild scented gorse, and wildlife, the people are naturally friendly (where else would you find a warm response from strangers if you just smile, wave or speak a word of greeting!). Then there's the food, the vinos (!) the culture, the relaxed way of life - all combined to create our own small slice of paradise! All this only 45 minutes from civilisation and of course Malaga airport - as needs must!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Dear Sue and Trevor. We'd like to thank you both for one of the best weeks of our lives. We absolutely loved Finca Manolo, and you definitely took care of every little detail. We will recommend this place to everyone and would be more than happy to come back one day. Special thanks to Terry, who we loved chatting with also. Please don't ever sell the house! We'd love to return!

What a wonderful place!!!

  • 5 of 5

Finca Manolo was a truly wonderful place to stay. A beautiful location, lovely farmhouse, huge pool and great care from Sue and Trevor. We love our wildlife and saw and heard so many birds nearby. Close-by white villages were beautiful and the restaurants in Colmenar and Mazmullar are well worth a visit. The local bar in Roma is walking distance and very friendly. This was probably the most relaxing holiday we've ever had and we'll definitely be going back many times.

One of Andalucia's best kept secrets

  • 5 of 5

Returning again for the 5th time in 3 years to the wonderful properties offered by Sue, Trevor and family set in the beautiful countryside, in the mountains above Malaga with stunning views of Comares, after one week back at home we booked in again!. If you cherish peace and quiet for ultimate relaxation with outstanding facilities at the properties for all the family, which offer fantastic value for money, then this is the place to head for. Although you feel like the world can pass you by, and its so quiet you could hear a pin drop, you are just minutes away from the wonderful Spanish villages of Colmenar, Riogordo and Benamargosa whilst a short trip on deserted highways would take you to the Mediterranean highway, Velez Malaga, Nerja and beyond, to mention but a few. This is the perfect base to explore Andalucia and beyond, and only a short journey from Malaga and the airport. Sue, Trevor and family are the perfect hosts and the properties are maintained to the highest standard whilst maintaining the charm and allure of traditional Spanish culture. Long hot days in the sun, and alfresco dining on the barbecue are quenched with Rueda Verdejo, a dip in the crystal clear pool and always topped off with an hour in the hot tub in the evening. A meticulous file of information ensures you have all the local information to hand, however these wonderful hosts are only a phone call, text, or e-mail away, should you feel the need for any assistance. I feel like I have said too much (selfishly I would want to keep it a secret), as we cherish our time at the Finca, and will continue to book with our new friends in Spain for years to come hopefully :-) Thank you Sue, Trevor and family for the unspoiled wonderful times we have enjoyed at the Finca, and hope to see you again in the autumn. <3 Martyn & Andrea Xxx

Paradise for those wanting a quiet family holiday

  • 5 of 5

Finca Manolo is stunning. A quiet, secluded home from home. The pool is superb, as is the garden and various shaded areas. The house is full of genuine Spanish ornaments and paintings. The house is spotless and the beds are very comfortable. Sue made us feel so welcome and made sure our stay was perfect. We bbq'd every night and sat outside until the stars came out. Just breath taking. If you want a quiet secluded holiday this is the place to go. I cannot wait to go back.

Peaceful and tranquil holiday

  • 5 of 5

The villa had everything we needed, lots of space and it was well equipped feeling like a home rather than a holiday let. The kids very much enjoyed the pool which was spotlessly clean throughout our stay. The surrounding countryside was beautiful and very rural and we enjoyed shopping in Colmenar searching for the fishmongers & butchers. This area of Spain was unspoilt by tourism and much less busy, it still felt very Spanish and everybody was very friendly. Sue was very efficient with the booking process and very patient with all my questions. We briefly met Trevor when he cleaned the pool and he was equally as friendly and helpful. Many thanks for a lovely holiday. August 2015

Owner's Response: Many thanks for a wonderful review. We are delighted you enjoyed your stay and the surrounding area. We very much appreciate your positive comments and in particular about our local white village, Colmenar, which we agree has a charm of its own! We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back to our home again one day soon. With best wishes from Sue and Tevor.

Beautiful situation, very comfortable accomodation

  • 5 of 5

Our first impressions on arrival were that there was plenty of space with loads of traditional charm and character but without sacrificing creature comfort. The house was very well equipped for self catering and nice and clean when we arrived. There is a bar nearby, a lovely 15 minute evening walk away, which we very much enjoyed on two occasions, restaurants are driving distance away. The interior of the house was beautifully cool during the day when the weather was hot at times during our stay but comfortably warm in the cool of the evening. We used the wall mounted electric radiators on our first evening which were effective in warming the house, the weather was very warm afterwards and we didn't need to use them again. A wood burning stove and gas heater were provided which we didn't need to use.

The swimming pool was wonderful which we used daily and was cleaned and maintained during our stay.

The main reason for our visit to this part of Spain was to observe the birdlife and we weren't disappointed, the position of the house gave excellent views of birds of prey in particular. Overall one of the best holidays we've enjoyed together.

Car: necessary

We are only 20 minutes drive from the picturesque lake at Vinuela, which has two restaurants, where you can sample typical country fayre while looking out over the lake, Mount Maroma and the Sierra Tejada beyond. A further 20 minute (easy drive) to the coast will provide access to long stretches of uncommercialised beaches with many fresh fish restaurants to choose from along the way! For a little more life, the more sophisticated resorts of Nerja and Marbella are approx one hour's drive.

Malaga airport is an uncomplicated 45 minute drive away. (Granada round one hour 20) Car hire is essential, and we can usually help to arrange this. We provide full, easy to follow, details of how to find us a few weeks before your arrival.

Many guests visit Malaga with it's vibrant historic old town at least once, this takes 35 minutes by car. Granada and the Alhambra palace are also a firm favorite taking around 90 minutes. The ancient town of Antequera is also en-route, as is the Sierra Nevada (2 hours) and Various Natural Parks, including the hot springs at Alhama. Nearer to home we have walking birdwatching and horseriding. The traditional white pueblo of Comares a former moorish stronghold, is also well worth a visit.

Further Details:

Our nearest village for a range of facilities like tapas bars, restaurants, mini supermarkets, banks, post office, chemist and 24 hour emergency medical centre is Colmenar, meaning beehive, where as you would expect, it's usually possible to buy some fresh homemade honey! Colmenar is a leisurely 12 mins drive away from Finca Manolo. In fact everything is leisurely here! It's also known as the capital of the Montes de Malaga, and this is where the scenic drive through the Mountains of Malaga begins. Buses also run to Malaga, and taxis are also available in Colmenar and nearby Comares. For a slightly different mode of transport you may like to take a Mule ride starting from our friendly local bar in El Romo, ( less than 15 mins walk downhill). Maria and her son Jose Luis run the local bar, and you can always be assured of a warm welcome there, together with a cold cerveza or a glass of local vino. Maria can usually rustle up a Simple local dish, upon request. The home cured olives in garlic and herbs are delicious!

Cava on ice and flower for special occasions are also possible - please ask.

November to March exclusive pricing for 2: please ask for underoccupancy pricing during this period

New from 2014: Organised diving trips and courses with fully qualified and insured PADI diving instructor, including beginners lessons in your own pool! Plus 4x4 adventure day trips. Please email the owner using the enquiry form below.
