About the property

La Caze Gites are located in a small hamlet above the very picturesque Tarn Valley, just 2 minutes away from the pretty village of Broquies in the Parc Naturel Regional des Grands Causses. Broquies has all amenities, including shops, a tennis court and a lively fete in the summer. The larger, bustling town of St Affrique, with its fabulous Saturday market full of regional products, is only 25 minutes away through yet another pretty valley, that of the Dourdou. Views from La Caze Gites are simply breath taking. Our gites are authentically restored from a 19th century Aveyron barn with many original features, but at the same time havng all the comforts of home and facilities such as wifi, satellite TV and DVD player, dishwasher, washing machine, etc. Beds have luxury microfibre toppers and we use Egyptian cotton bed linen. Both gites have their own private south-facing sun terrace over looking the garden and swimming pool (guests enjoy exclusive use of both) with views of approx 40km across the Tarn Valley to the Lacaune mountains. Whilst with us you can choose to simply relax and unwind in beautiful, peaceful, rural surroundings or spend some time sightseeing around the small nearby villages or larger historic towns, such as Albi, Rodez and Millau (home to the now famous viaduct). The stunning Gorge des Raspes du Tarn is literally on the doorstep and there are numerous fortified villages and chateaux to explore in the area. If you are feeling more energetic the area is ideal for walking and other activities such as river and lake swimming, canoeing, cycling, horse riding, parascending and fishing can be enjoyed. La Caze Gites are also a perfect base for special interest holidays, for example photography, bird watching, mountain biking and hiking.

About Joanne Hargreaves and Jon Clements

Having had busy careers in hospitality and the public sector in the South East of England we finally realised our dream of living and running a gite business in the south of France in early 2016. We love the relaxed French lifestyle and the slower pace of life. Jon is a trained chef and loves preparing meals using local produce. Having spent several holidays with her French pen friend, Joanne is now happily rekindling her love of the French language. We both enjoy meeting new people and sharing our passion for this stunning area. Every day we marvel at the breath taking views from our property and can't quite believe how lucky we are! We are on hand to give information on the local area and to be of help to ensure that our guests enjoy their holiday to the max - but equally if we are not needed we don't intrude. We love it here at La Caze and we hope you will too!

Joanne Hargreaves and Jon Clements purchased this cottage in 2016

Why Joanne Hargreaves and Jon Clements chose Aveyron

The Aveyron is a hidden gem, full of stunning countryside and pretty towns and villages. It feels off the beaten track but is easily accessible and perfectly placed for a varied holiday with a wonderful climate. The view from La Caze blew us away and we love the old stone buildings and homely feel of the place. Whilst being peaceful and rural La Caze is minutes away from Broquies, a village with numerous facilities, and is situated on a decent 'D' road that takes you along the beautiful Tarn Valley and into larger towns and cities.

What makes this cottage unique

Being just outside of the thriving village of Broquies and with others close by, we are able to enjoy the peacefulness and slower pace of country life but not feel isolated. Just 15 minutes to the north is the village of Villefranche de Panat which, like Broquies, has all the daily amenities you will need and more. There is a weekly market, choice of restaurants and large lake where you can swim, sunbathe and hire boats. The nearby villages of Brousse Le Chateau and St Izaire have restaurants and of course each have a chateau to explore. Brousse Le Chateau Is classified as one of the most beautiful villages in France and is indeed a favourite with guests. Then there is always the large swimming pool with the amazing view to come home to!

Guestbook comments from the owner

La Violette was delightful, beautifully decorated and very comfortable, with sunflowers peeping in our bedroom window. The Pool was exceptionaly well maintained, larger than expected, with outstanding views across the open countryside. We spent much of our week just relaxing around the Gite, not able to tear ourselves away from the beautiful location. Mary and Steve were very friendly and helpful. I would definitely recommend this property.Joanne Fell Aug 2012

The location is fantastic; views spectacular and the gite had everything we needed for a brilliant holiday! The kids thoroughly enjoyed the pool, boule and table tennis. Cookson & Dawson families, Essex August 2007

The gîte is a pleasure, so well and thoughtfully equipped, and the

position is sensational, in the near-silence of the hamlet, with the

spectacular views over the garden and onto the panorama of the great

hill ridges to the south. And away from La Caze there is so much to

visit in the area. D&F Pevsner May 2013

Fabulous place to stay in a beautiful area - didn't want to leave

  • 5 of 5

Having visited La Caze already last year, we decided to bring the offspring this time and it certainly didn't disappoint. We had 5 adults staying in Cardabelle (the larger of the 2 gites) and it was perfect. The gites are well maintained, very comfortable and homely and have everything you need for your stay plus more. Jo & Jon (the owners) provide you with a welcome pack and did everything they could to ensure our stay was a good one.

The area has plenty to offer, we could only stay for 5 days this time but we managed to go canoeing in the river, had a relaxing day sunning ourselves at a beautiful lake, visited the picturesque Brousse with it's lovely chateau and did a trip round the area taking in the breath-taking view point at Asseynes. Oh and we also managed some relaxing afternoons round the pool too!!

The 'kids' (youngest is 18 so not really kids anymore) were blown away by the location - I think the word 'awesome' was used on more than one occasion!

I would most definitely recommend staying at La Caze to anyone, we'll most definitely be back

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for your lovely review. It was great to welcome you back to La Caze for a return stay and lovely that the whole family were able to come this time. We are so pleased that you were able to make the most of the area and the things to do here as well as having some relaxation at La Caze, particularly in the heat! It would be great to see you back here again at some point.

A little piece of calm and tranquility

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we arrived we properly felt as though we were on holiday. The gite was gorgeous, clean, bright and airy, full of home comforts, stocked with everything you need plus some little extras like a bottle of wine, eggs, butter, milk, tea, coffee - fantastic!

Jo & Jon who own the gites are so welcoming and nothing is too much trouble. We didn't brave the pool this time but we'll be back next year and will rectify that. There's bikes, table tennis plus much more. So much to do without even going out and yet it's an oasis of calm.

We did a little sight seeing - so many beautiful villages and chateauxs in the area and the scerney is breath taking.

All 4 of us left (reluctantly) feeling like our batteries had been properly recharged. Just wish we'd been there for longer.

I would definitely recommend the gites for a holiday for everyone from friends, families with young children (or old children), couples. There's something for everyone.

Thank you so much to Jo and Jon for making our break away so lovely. We all look forward to seeing you again very soon.

Wonderful Holiday - amazing views & scenery, well equipped cottage with all home comforts

  • 5 of 5

Firstly we do not normally write reviews, but La Caze exceeded our expectations & Jon & Jo the owners are such lovely people that we had to put into words (as best we could) how wonderful this place is. Holidays are precious time spent with the family, time to relax and re charge. When looking for a place to stay searching online we have found that even though the location & venue can look superb on Owner Direct when you arrive it can be somewhat of a let down and not meet your expectations. This is not the case at La Caze - the cottage is superb, clean, well furnished, and the views = wow. The surrounding area offers so much to do, there are so many historic villages & beautiful towns, great places to stroll around absorb the atmosphere & culture. To speak with the friendly locals; even if your French is like mine and very minimal you can easily communicate and enjoy a coffee whilst watching the world go by. Then there are the activities; with an 18 & 16 year old to keep entertained this might have been a challenge, but not here with river swimming, a brilliant kayak venue 5 mins down the road from la Caze, walks, paddle boarding, speed boats, lake swimming and running trails. If we had enough energy left then a dip in the pool outside the cottage or a game of boule or table tennis meant we had two very happy & tired kids (and adults) at the end of each day. Then there are Jon & Jo the owners, they have a great way of being there when you need them or when you want to chat but never interfering or intruding. We booked a meal for our first night at La Caze which was cooked by Jon & Jo; served to us in the cottage. Excellent, wonderful. fantastic were the words that we used to desrcibe the 4 courses that were provided. My wife is Gluten intolerant so we always have to be careful when dining out, but again Jon made sure that she was catered for and the lemon meringue that he made was the best that we have ever tasted and it was GF. Well there you go that is our opinion of La Caze, the loacl area and the lovley Jon & Jo, We will be back again next year so I hope not too many people read this and fully book the place!

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for your lovely review. We are so pleased you had a great holiday, managing to pack so much into your week and really make the most of all the area has to offer. We agree the kayaking from Broquies is fantastic! It is also good to get positive feedback on the meals, particularly when cooking for guests with special dietary requirements. We are working hard to ensure that all our guests have a great holiday experience at La Caze and guests wanting to return is the ultimate compliment. It would be great to welcome you back to La Caze next year.

Fabulous Holiday

  • 5 of 5

Now we have confirmed our booking for next year it's safe to write the review.

La Caze is a great place for a family holiday and Jo and Jon are wonderful hosts. There were so many little touches which made this better than the average gite stay.

Arriving to find cold beer in the fridge, red wine on the counter and food to make a snack was just the start.

The gite itself was spotless with comfy beds and beautiful linen. There was a huge cupboard with spares and endless towels both for inside and for the pool. Our teenage kids enjoyed the excellent wifi and Sky TV whilst the younger ones played boules ping pong and croquet between dips in the lovely pool. Night swimming was a real highlight as was stargazing the Milky Way.

There is a weekly list of what is on for those who enjoy night markets, local festivals and visiting the locality. It's a triathletes dream with great running cycling and lake swimming.

Jon is a trained chef and we had two delicious meals which catered for our diverse tastes and more than replaced the energy burned.

This is Jo and Jon's first season; they are wonderful warm and friendly hosts who manage the balance of being available and letting you get on with your holiday.we can't wait to go back next year.

Great gite with stunning views

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for two weeks in August 2015 with our then 6 & 8 yr old children (under the previous owners so can't comment on the new owners). The gite is great, in a very quiet spot on the side of a hill with stunning views over the Tarn valley. I'm not sure you can get a better view from a pool or eating area. The gite itself was fine with everything we needed. Really nice pool. Having the table tennis table in the barn was brilliant for parents and children alike, as was the boules piste. Our only minor gripe was that the outside eating areas of the two gites were very close to each other meaning you had to listen to each other at dinner time. I don't know if this is still the case.

This is a fairly quiet bit of France with less of the touristy sites you get in the Dordogne, but equally is less busy and in two weeks we only saw 1 or 2 other British families. Having the canoeing base at the bottom of the hill is handy, the kids loved going down the 'toboggan' at the weir. Our kids really loved 'cycling' on the velorail near Roquefort, good fun and great views.

After a good few years coming to France with our kids we have come to the conclusion that the river and lake beaches that the French do so well are far better than a trip to the beach (often quieter, warmer water and no salt), thus removing the tie of the Atlantic/Med coasts and opening up other parts of France. The lake at Villefrance-de-Panet is nice with an area for swimming and a diving platform, though it can be a bit more breezy as it is fairly exposed. Not really a beach though. The river beach at St Roma du Tarn was quite nice but a little busy. We really liked the beach at Viala du Tarn, an idyllic spot of almost motionless warm river in a steep sided valley with bar, picnic tables and table tennis. You could also canoe from here though we didn't try it.

Visiting the Millau viaduct is a must, driving into the valley underneath rather than over it allows you to take in the sheer scale of it. On recommendation of the previous owners we went to one of the night markets in Sainte-Affrique which had a great atmosphere. Driving up/down the Tarn valleys yields spectacular views at each turn.

I would love to come back here with my bike as it would make for a great cycling base. Lots of quiet roads and plenty of hills topping out at >1000m.

This is one gite we would happily come back to as the gite and surrounding area ticks pretty much all the boxes.

Owner's Response: Thanks very much for your review. As you know, we only took over the gite business at La Caze in March 2016 so haven't yet had the pleasure of meeting you. The amazing view from the pool and terraces hasn't changed (!) but since March we have decorated both gites, replaced some furniture and added some new equipment both in the gites and to the outside area. Beds now have luxury microfibre toppers and Egyptian cotton bedding and we provide fluffy white cotton towels. We have added another terrace adjacent to La Violette so guests at that gite now have an alternative seating area. We are also offering evening meals for guests served in their gites and these have proved extremely popular. I agree entirely with your recommendations for sightseeing. Guests this year have also enjoyed swimming and other water based activities at Lac de Pareloup, 35 minutes from here. In addition to Sainte Affrique there have also been great night markets nearby at Coupiac and Villefranche de Panat. With regard to cycling, we have had a number of guests cycling around the area, using either their own bikes or those we provide. It would be great to welcome you and your family back to La Caze for another holiday at some point.

Stunning, comfortable and spacious. Great facilities for family life

  • 5 of 5

The property is clean, spacious and fully equipped. The gite is comfortable with fantastic views. The pool is clean with good sun loungers and cushions. There are bikes to use and table tennis was a hit with the kids. There is more than enough to do in the surrounding area and plenty of information is provided in the gite. A nice touch from Jo is weekly itinerary detailing local events. Definitely visit a night market!

The hosts were helpful without being obtrusive. If you want a relaxing holiday but with some things to do which allow a few hours in the pool each evening, then this is the place for you! Kayaking in Villa du Tarn and St Rome du Tarn are a must to experience the tranquillity of the Tarn river. We'll be back one day.
