Overview

About the property

Cottage in Viganj, Peljesac Peninsula, Dalmatian Coast - Peaceful Hillside Location

Owl Cottage is situated in the tranquil hillside hamlet of Habici, near Viganj. It has stunning elevated views of the sea, mountains, islands, distant Korcula old town, local villages and passing boats. On a clear night the sky is beautiful; your only neighbours are the local wildlife (owls, coyotes, grasshoppers etc). This historic property is suited to those seeking absolute peace and quiet (writers, artists, thinkers etc). However, it is also well placed for morning swimming, windsurfing at hip Viganj, parading on Orebic seafront, visits to local wineries, hiking up Mt Ilija, and day trips to places such as (Venetian-era) Korcula, Ston, Dubrovnik, Split and Mostar. Owl Cottage was renovated to a high specification in 2006 (3 levels, open plan, spiral staircase, exposed stone, open fireplace). Note that the property is reached after a 200 metre walk uphill from the road. If you aren't fit when you arrive, you will be when you leave! Owl Cottage is a property for the adventurous.

About Stephen Ogden

I am a British chap with a young family who fell in love with the Dalmatian Coast (Croatia & Montenegro) while travelling on business a few years ago. The region is physically beautiful: limestone peaks, lovely coastline, clear seas, stone-built towns & villages, vineyards, olive groves etc. There's another kind of beauty in the traditional way and pace of life. Croatia & Montenegro are safe countries where things happen slower than in the UK & Western Europe. This can be frustrating at times (e.g. when dealing with builders & bureaucrats), but is fine when you're visiting on vacation. Our children love taking holidays there. They learnt to swim in the sea opposite Korcula Island.

Stephen Ogden purchased this house in 2005

Why Stephen Ogden chose Peljesac Peninsula

Owl Cottage is a modest property with a million dollar view of Viganj Bay and Korcula Island. We never tire of sitting on the terrace and watching the world go by. Owl Cottage offers tranquility - the only sounds are the hooting of the Owls and the clicking of the grasshoppers. It's a short walk to delightful Viganj with her seaside cafes, clean swimming waters and excellent water sports. But take a torch if you plan to return after dark.

What makes this house unique

It's rare to enjoy such peace and quiet. Owl Cottage is 200 metres from the road so you won't be disturbed by cars.

Guestbook comments from the owner

'We stayed at Owl Cottage for the first time in August 2006, and had the most relaxing holiday of our lives.'

'The accommodation is great - comfy beds, first-rate bathroom facilities, very good kitchen equipment and a homely sitting area. But best of all for us has been the outside patio.'

'View... uplifted us and caused us wonderment on a daily basis.'

'Great house with breath-taking views... The space and simplicity of the cottage are both great.'

'All in all a fantastic place that really should get a lot of use!'

'Wow - just want to pass on our sincere thanks for the use of Owl Cottage - absolutely gorgeous place in one of the loveliest parts of Croatia. Mario was very good and attended to any minor issues promptly and efficiently. Definitely recommend the windsurfing, boys loved it. So all in all a great experience had by all - good food, great wines and lovely beaches.'

Beautiful old house, spacious rooms, incredible views, tucked away up the hillside above Viganj.

  • 5 of 5

The house is accessed by a steep, narrow path with some steps (as described) - cars are left in a lay-by on the road below but this suited us as it meant there was no noise from traffic! Such a peaceful place, perfect for sleeping, reading, sunbathing, eating outside and popping down to the sea (10-15 mins walk) for a cooling swim. Clean and well-stocked with towels, bedding etc. Mario was very helpful and easy to contact. Viganj is sleepy and quiet, with a small supermarket and a couple of lovely restaurants overlooking the sea. We hired a small motorboat, and also took the passenger ferry to Korcula. Loved Loviste, Extravaganza and Divna beaches (Divna a gentle 40-minute drive through some stunning mountain scenery - well worth it). I would recommend this property for the relatively fit and mobile.

Owl cottage is a perfect place

  • 5 of 5

It is true, the place of Owl cottage is a dream with a stunning sea view and absolut peace.

The old house is carefully renovated, clean and well maintained. Set in the natural landscape, the cottage is the perfect lacation to recover away from mass tourism.

The local manager was allways helpful and approachable, he gave us very good tips for Restaurants and shopping.

We spent 10 unforgetable days at that charming place which we will never forget. Thank you.

We gladly recommend this property to our friends

Coast/Beach:

Owl Cottage is several hundred metres away from the many pebble beaches of Viganj town, with its renowned windsurfing facilities and laid-back, undiscovered charm. The clear Adriatic seas are great for young children and adults alike (but buy or bring swimming footwear). Snorkelling reveals an active underwater marine life.

Travel:

Dubrovnik airport is a delightful 2 hour 10 minute car journey away (perhaps break the journey with a cappuccino in Ston). Car hire from the airport is recommended - we like the Economy Car Hire website. Ferries from Italy and elsewhere in Croatia arrive to nearby Korcula Island. Orebic ferry port (regular car and passenger ferries to Korcula) is about 8km away.

Distances:

Less than 1km to Viganj, 3km to Kuciste and 7km to Orebic (beaches, hotels, restaurants, bank, supermarkets etc). Day trips recommended to Korcula Island (20 mins from Orebic), many local villages and wineries, Mljet Island, Ston, Dubrovnik, Split and Mostar (Bosnia).

Further Details:

Please note that one's choice of restaurants etc is severely reduced 'off season', but that June and September can be superb times to visit the region (crowds gone, weather often great, most places still open). Our favourite family restaurants are Forte in Viganj (excellent quality, imaginative & ever-changing menu), Ponta in Viganj (mammoth salads) and Villa Vrgorac (5km away in Perna). Small supermarket in Viganj, several larger stores in Orebic. Matusko Dingac & Roso Postup wines highly recommended - buy direct from winery.
