The idyllic terrace is partly covered by an ancient vineyard and is the ideal spot for sunbathing or simply relaxing, taking in the riveting fragrance of the orange blossom (in April) and the ever-changing colours of the spectacular mountains beyond. Right beside the sunny terrace there is a huge stone-built barbecue.

Both bedrooms, particularly the cozy cave-bedroom carved into the rock, are perfect for an enjoyable siesta on a hot summer afternoon and the open fireplace in the living room gives warmth in the winter evenings. In order to get to the cave bedroom you have to pass through the other two person bedroom. In addition, the house contains air conditioner and a heating system.

The new kitchen is fully equipped and has high standard facilities. You will have all that you need (for example, sharp kitchen knives, large red wine glasses, quality mattresses and bed linens, north European standard duvets and towels).

The property is only 2km away from Órgiva (20 minutes walking distance) and it provides with all the quietness and tranquility of pure nature to make your holiday as pleasant and relaxing as possible.

ADDITIONAL SERVICES

In addition, we can organise and facilitate flamenco classes, cooking courses, riding tours, alpine hiking tours and ski days.

We can arrange car hire from Malaga Airport with a very efficient car rental company with excellent services (small company, no queuing, quick and personalised service, no pre-charged petrol, etc.). The service refers to a new air conditioned car with full comprehensive insurance without any excess for two named drivers.

http://www.ticketmaster.es/nav/landings/en/mucho_mas/entradas_alhambra/entradas.html

To print out the tickets at the cash point of the Caixa Bank in Órgiva or at the Alhambra entrance, it is important to present the same credit/cash card which was used for the online payment.

Whatever the season is, the region remains lively and vibrant with enjoyable activities. All over the year and across the whole region (mountains and coast), restaurants, cafes and beach bars by the sea are open and will give you the chance to experience our gorgeous gastronomical culture and the Andalucian lifestyle.

About the Owner

I came across the Alpujarras by chance during my journey through Spain in the mid 80's. This was about the same time as the famous writer Chris Stewart arrived into the area. Years later he published his bestseller ‘Driving Over Lemons: An Optimist in Andalucia (The Lemons Trilogy)’ where he tells all these funny tales and amazing experiences he had in this very region. I also discovered the same sort of authentic unspoiled paradise as he did. Back then, south of Granada was very different to what it is now. The area was impoverished, there were not many cars around but lots of donkeys instead, TV was a novelty and people actually 'lived' in the bars. There was no VAT tax yet and no motorway for hundreds of miles. Granada was a day journey away and northern Europe a different planet. I was in heaven. I’ve been living in this area for almost 30 years and my children were born and grew up here. I absolutely love this region. Since then, I've been exploring the many things this area has to offer: hiking, skiing, cycling, snorkeling, biking, cooking, climbing and partying, of course. It´s my home and it feels like paradise!

Guestbook comments from the owner

'This is a special place to relax and enjoy, an oasis in a world beset by problems. Take in the evenings to watch the changing colours and shadows over the Sierra De Lujar and the Sunset. Enjoy.' Michael King.

'We were here at El Cura for 2 weeks for our honeymoon and its been a little heaven in the Alpujarras. Sitting at the terrace lapping up the sun after dips in the pool has been wonderful. Especially reading Driving over Lemons by Chris Stewart who lives down the valley. The best bit is the tranquility of El Cura, sleeping in the cave, lazing by the pool and enjoying the sun with fantastic views. Enjoy!' Sam and Scott.

The terrace has been a joy. The sounds of the birds, water, the sight of such hills and the glorious sent of lemon and orange blossom...the azahar! Barbara & Jeremy.

Fantastic spot, beautiful scenery and wonderful weather. Joel family.

What a fantastic 2 weeks in a lovely house surrounded by fantastic views. A little bit of paradise! Debbie & Tom.

Amazing holiday in a beautiful area!

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at this cottage was absolutely amazing, better than we could have expected. The cottage and the garden surrounding it are beautiful, perfect for the amazing views, to enjoy the sun at the pool or on the terrace. The cottage has everything you could wish for and all of high quality. Orgiva is a nice town with supermarkets, restaurants.. the Alpujarra is just precious. We definitely want to come back to discover the area some more!

Wonderful little property in beautiful, private and tranquil surroundings.

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was very clean and well equipped. The gardens are peaceful and private, with a lovely secluded pool area. The cottage is quite dark inside but this keeps it cool in the hot weather. You can walk into Orgiva in 15-20 mins, either on the road, which is fairly quiet, or by a concrete track which avoids the road. Orgiva is a small town but provides everything you need in the way of supermarkets, cafes, restaurants etc. Our favourite restaurants in town were La Almazara and Teteria Baraka (alcohol free). The cafe con leche in the market hall terrace cafe was the best we found in town. Nearer the property we found our very favourite restaurant, Flor de Limonero, at Hotel Taray, about 4 mins walk from the cottage! The restaurant at Camping Orgiva is even nearer and takes about 3 mins to walk to. A bit more rustic but equally worth visiting.

We hired a car and ventured up into the hills to visit Pampaneira (about 40 mins drive). Beautiful little town and well worth the visit. I found the hairpin bends a bit much otherwise we would have carried on up to the other villages! On another day we drove into Lanjaron (about 20 mins drive) and this was delightful. Wished we had left time to go back. Wander down the little back streets and admire the views.

Driving to Granada to visit the Alhambra was a doddle. Just follow the main road from Orgiva, through Lanjaron, up to Granada and then follow the very obvious signs to Alhambra. Park at the Alhambra car park. The route avoids town altogether and could not have been easier - although it was a Sunday when we went and it may be busier during the week. The Alhambra was definitely worth a visit. Afterwards we walked down to Plaza de Santa Ana and walked along the river and then caught a bus back up to the car park.

If you're spending any time in Malaga we would highly recommend the Devour Malaga food tour. We did the evening tapas tour and Susanne was a wonderful guide. Really interesting information about the history of Malaga and excellent food and drink. Perfect!

We will definitely be returning to Orgiva. It was a truly wonderful holiday. The countryside is beautiful and next time we will explore further afield. A combination of lazing by the pool and walking across the road for a wonderful outdoor meal, followed by a day of sightseeing made for a perfect holiday.

Beautiful, wonderful, relaxing, happy little Cortijo! With better Wi-Fi than London if you need it!

  • 5 of 5

We are still enthusing about our stay at Cortijo El Cura. It is the loveliest, most relaxed place I think we've ever been for a holiday.

The house and garden were everything we needed with heaps of charm, and better facilities than expected thrown in. Really this place was much better than it looked on the website.

We are definitely going to go back, and hope to stay longer next time.

We thought about going on trips around the area but really couldn't be bothered because we were too relaxed. We did go to the Alhambra because we had pre-booked tickets. It's well worth a visit, but if we hadn't pre-booked I don't think would have even tried, mañana!

The moment we arrived we knew El Cura was perfect and it really was for us. Quiet, lush and focused on the outdoors. Beautiful views, mountains of Lemons, amazing aerobatic displays by the bats over the terrace at dusk. A cool shady play area for our 3 year who is desperate to go back and a fantastic pool. We loved the pool because it was not too big and we could stand up in the deep end so very safe with young children. Really comfy garden furniture, enough sunshades to keep little ones (and big ones) out of the sun. It was incredibly hot - hotter than usual for the time of year apparently but we didn't suffer at all. The house is beautifully cool and the bedrooms if you kept the curtains drawn in the day, were equally so. We used a fan at night twice when it had been 38 degrees during the day other than that we didn't need to. There is air-con but we didn't need it.

We went food shopping before we went to the house, but the well thought out welcome pack would have been enough to see us through to Monday - having arrived on Saturday. A really refreshing thing was that dish soap, sponges, tea towels, laundry soap, and basic toiletries were provided and heaps of fresh towels too. The bed linen was fresh cotton, my pet hate is non cotton bedlinen especially when in a hot climate, but here it was deliciously comfortable and fresh.

The beds were so comfortable I wanted to take them home!

The entire place was spotlessly clean and I am a real fusspot about these things - it was amazing!! Clearly the house is lovingly maintained by Oliver and this is his profession not a quick buck on the side, and it really shows. We had no need to call upon him, but from the guest book you understand how kind and generous he is.

So now you'll have to go and find out for yourself! We cannot recommend El Cura highly enough.

A little bit of paradise

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for somewhere quiet and peaceful this is the perfect spot: tucked away, with glorious views of the hills. Although there are neighbours you can scarcely see them. The greatest noise comes from the birds. The house is well equipped and the owner is very helpful. Orgiva is a 15 minutes walk up a gentle footpath, or a 5 minute drive, but there is a super bar at the campsite 2 minutes walk down the road, and an excellent , if rustic, restaurant 5 minutes away. The welcome pack provided by the owner was perfect, so when we arrived mid Sunday afternoon, with all the shops shut there was plenty for the 6 of us to eat. We all really enjoyed our stay, lots of walking, swimming and sitting outside enjoying the warmth and the house wine. We filled the house to bursting ( there are 2 bedrooms, and then a sofa bed in the living room), but it worked very well for us as the garden is beautiful, and there is plenty of space to sit outside. We would all recommend it, a super few days away.

Idyllic location

  • 5 of 5

We spent our second holiday here, this time for 2 weeks, it was wonderful, peaceful, we didn't move from here for the whole 2 weeks! The house feels private and is not visible from the road, we just relaxed, enjoying nature and swimming in the lovely pool. We have stayed in a few different places over the years, this was the only place we have gone back to. Perfect if you want a relaxing holiday. Looking forward to our next visit!

Location

From the Owner

The privileged and quiet area set in absolute natural and private tranquility in a fertile valley and only 1 mile away from town (15-20 minutes walking and 2 minutes by car). This is the perfect location to explore the immediate wild surroundings, Las Alpujarras, Sierra Nevada, Granada and the Costa Tropical.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Granada/Malaga/Almeria at 45 Miles Nearest Barpub : Orgiva at 1 Miles Nearest Ferry : Motril at 18 Miles Nearest Golf : Motril/Granada at 18 Miles Nearest Train : Granada at 30 Miles Nearest Motorway : Lanjaron at 10 Miles Nearest Restaurant : Camping/Hotel Taray at 300 Metres Nearest Ski : Sierra Nevada at 50 Miles Nearest Beach : Salobreña at 18 Miles Car: recommended

Cortijo El Cura is just 1 mile away from the town Órgiva, with easy access by car and it only takes about 20 minutes walk to reach it. The property is located in fertile valley of the Guadalfeo river within the south-faced slopes of the impressive Sierra Nevada and just 30 minutes away from the beautiful sandy beaches of the Costa Tropical.

This region is characterised by its lush Mediterranean landscape with diverse and fertile vegetation, Europe´s cleanest starry sky and over 300 days of sunshine a year.

Sierra Nevada provides the region with fresh water, which finds its way through the ‘Acequias’ all along into the terraced fields. Acequias are ancient Moorish irrigation channels built into the rocks which cross the hilts all over the region. There are amazing opportunities to explore the stunning nature with pleasurable walks and hiking tours.

The closest town, Órgiva, is a lively, southern Andalusian town, picturesquely situated in a large valley in the middle of a wild mountain landscape, surrounded by rivers, olive and orange groves between Granada and the coast. It has numerous street cafes, bars, restaurants, terraces, small shops, a weekly market and an old-fashioned market hall with fish, meat and vegetable stands. Órgiva also has supermarkets, organic shops, banks, a post office and an emergency hospital.

Only 7km away is the traditional spa-town Lanjarón, with its ancient but recently renovated baths offering various wellness services.

Granada is situated just 50km away from the house. Its marvelous and indescribable beauty with breathtaking Moorish-medieval palaces of the Alhambra makes this city one of the true gems of Europe.

There are three excellent golf courses within the radius of 30km from the property.

And there is also, of course, Sierra Nevada. This is Spain´s most modern ski resort and the one with the most sunny days in the whole Europe. It has an altitude between 2000m and 3400m over 110km of slopes. High snow, long and wide pistes, reasonable prices and a surprisingly comfortable atmosphere make Sierra Nevada an exceptional ski destination.

After a ski day, there will be a fire in the fireplace and a freshly squeezed orange juice waiting for you in the house. On request, you can also book an irresistible hot Finnish wood-fired sauna.

The privileged location of this property gives you the unique opportunity to choose between going skiing in the Sierra Nevada, enjoying the urban and cultural buzz of Granada, sunbathing on the beach, exploring the local nature or staying in the house having a barbecue in the garden.

CULTURE AND FOOD

The nearly 800-year-long period Moors and Arab culture has influenced the landscapes of Alpujarra more than any other Spanish regions. The culture of the Moors is reflected in the architecture as well as in the arts and crafts, music and cooking. But above all, the Moors cultivated the land, built terraces and irrigation ditches, and brought a variety of plants and fruits from the East that shaped the landscape until the present days. Órgiva is known for its millenary olive trees, some which were planted by the Romans, with their powerful, distinctive gnarled trunks. Today there is an interesting addition to the old traditional alternative culture of artists, craftspeople, organic farmers or shops, Arabian tearooms, yoga and flamenco schools and a Buddhist center.

Culinary highlights in Órgiva: Spain is a gourmet's paradise and a country that enjoys the pleasure of food. The cuisine of the Alpujarra lives from the natural flavor of its products due to the unique combination of different altitudes, temperatures, natural waters and microclimate. As such, its cuisine oozes of colorful and vibrant taste. There is a vast myriad of delicious stews (including the world-famous paella), air-dried mountain ham, salames, chorizos, mountain cheese, seafood, fresh vegetables, wine, Cava, Sidra, and other local dishes which are considered world-class foods. Many of these specialties are served as tapas (delicious nibbles that come with a drink – beer, glass of wine or sherry).

Notes:

  • I would like to point out that as a house owner, I am very aware that our guests trust us with something very valuable, namely a part of their precious annual vacation. My job is to welcome them as guests, to introduce them into the house, to answer questions, to carry out repairs or services, to take care of the garden and the pool, or to do weekly work in the country such as pool maintenance and irrigating. In doing so, I take extraordinary care of the preferences of my guests, whether they are looking for more contact or prefer a completely undisturbed holiday. In this respect you and your holiday are guaranteed in very good hands.
