Your accommodation is a 4-star apartment on two levels in Doussard, at the southern end of beautiful Lac d'Annecy in the Rhone-Alpes region of France.

We're convenient for Annecy itself, for a relaxing holiday or for activities on and around the lake and its surrounding mountains whether Spring, Summer Autumn or Winter. You can go swimming in the fresh, clear water of Lac'Annecy in summer and go ski-ing at several ski-stations that are an easy drive from Résidence les Gentianes, without having to be tied to a single ski resort; or spend time exploring Annecy and around the lake - as well as further afield in Albertville, Grenoble, Geneva and even Italy via the Mt Blanc tunnel.

We're also ideally placed for sailing and fishing on the lake; paragliding (with one of the region's most popular landing stations in Doussard itself, and another at Doussard beach); cycling on the dedicated Piste Cyclable (or follow routes taken by the Tour de France!); walking in the hills; playing golf at two courses nearby; or simply relaxing with coffee or beer in the village or at the lakeside ...

One of only 3 separately designed apartments in our building, Résidence les Gentianes is traditional Alpine style in a modern building.

Résidence les Gentianes is equipped to a very high standard, including a larger-than-usual balcony with a view to Mt Charbon.

The first level comprises a kitchen and living/dining area leading to the balcony; double bedroom 1 with 150cm bed and access to the balcony; bathroom (bath with shower), separate toilet and laundry. Two staircases lead from the living area to a mezzanine double bedroom (140cm bed) and to Bedroom 3 with bunk beds.

We were awarded 4 stars based on sleeping 6, but the sofa in the living area converts into another full-size double bed, so it's possible to sleep up to 8 in total, or to have the flexibility of maybe 5 or 6 visitors using more beds. We provide bedlinen and towels accordingly. We can also provide a travel cot (at no extra charge).

The balcony is big enough for family-dining outdoors during the warm weather. The apartment is designed in the traditional Alpine style including sloping ceilings and exposed beams. The kitchen area includes an oven/grill and hob, fridge with freezer compartment, microwave and lots of pots, pans and dishes if you want to make the most of all the fresh produce you can buy at nearby supermarkets and superstores.

We have satellite TV with English-language channels inc BBC, ITV etc, and wireless Internet access that's included in the rental (and is faster than our connection in the UK!) There's our room we call the laundry; and in the basement we have our own garage.

Our location is ideal for more than water sports, sun-bathing and swimming in Summer and as a base for ski-ing in Winter. During our Spring and Autumn breaks we see many hang-gliders overhead; and cyclists on the Piste Cyclable that runs from Annecy, along the lake and past Doussard to Faverges and beyond to Ugine, approaching Albertville. These are fantastic seasons to see the spectacular Spring and Autumn colours on the mountains, whether walking in the hills near Résidence les Gentianes or gazing at them from Bar des 4 Chemins in the village or from the lakeside itself. You can see Mont Blanc on a clear day from one of the golf courses nearby, or from the ski station above the lake where the centenary Tour de France final Alpine stage finished.

During December, Annecy's Christmas market is very popular, set along the canals that feature in the iconic photos you see in travel features about the region.

We love to visit throughout the year ... and being in Doussard itself is just so convenient. (I say that becasue we are in Doussard, and not in one of the surrounding villages that sometimes are described as being in Doussard but aren't). We have the supermarket, boulangerie, bank, and Bar des 4 Chemins and its delicious lunches - all without needing to take the car!

We've had visitors from UK, France, the Netherlands, Ireland, Canada, USA, Australia, Brazil, Belgium, Finland, Denmark, Germany, Ireland, Singapore, S Africa, Sweden and Switzerland. Several British, French and Dutch families have visited 2 or 3 times; and two families have visited 5 times!

About Alan Highet

Alan and Shirley Highet have rented Residence les Gentianes since it was built in 2003. We live in Norfolk, having relocated from near Edinburgh. Our two daughters, who were teenagers at school when we bought the place, love it because there's much to do, but it's possible to chill out at the same time. (The piste cyclable is a favourite, as demonstrated in the photos on our own website - send an enquiry via this site and I can send you the link).

Why Alan Highet chose Doussard

Closeness to local facilities including our well-stocked Carrefour Contact supermarket, the boulangerie, boucherie/charcuterie, the bank, tabac and of course Bar des 4 Chemins, all within a couple of minutes walk. (Note that other properties advertised as being in Doussard can be car ride away ...).

If the number of return visits is a measure, Résidence les Gentianes scores well, with many visitors coming back again, even as often as three times (and two families have visited six and five times respectively!)

What makes this apartment unique

Inside Résidence les Gentianes, we have furnished and equipped our property to a high standard as it really is our home-from-home - including a better wireless Internet connection than we have in UK, and English-language TV so we keep up with BBC news and our favourite UK TV series. Our kitchen and laundry have more facilities than we have usually found in properties when we have rented elsewhere. If only we had the same balcony and views at home in UK!

Otherwise - Location Location Location - we are so close to local facilities; the beach is only a few minutes by car and the piste cyclable is only five minutes away by cycle; and all the lakeside venues are particularly easy to visit by car, whether on the east or west sides of Lake d'Annecy, because of our position at the south end of the lake. In addition to two supermarkets in the village, we have Intermarche and Carrefour superstores, and Lidl, only a five minute drive away and the market town of Faverges just a few minutes further; and when visiting Annecy we're usually parked within a 20- 25 mins drive along the lake and some of the world's most spectacular scenery.

Further afield, to the south we're only 25 minutes from Albertville and about another 50 minutes to Grenoble; Chambéry is only an hour from Doussard; and to the north we can visit Geneva or the northern shores of Lac Léman for lunch, or visit Italy via the Mt Blanc Tunnel for lunch, see the sights and be home in time for dinner!

Notes:
Notes on accommodation: One of only 3 apartments in the building, our entrance is on the first floor, so there's a flight of stairs. Bedrooms 2 and 3 are upstairs. There's a mezzanine floor and Alpine architecture so there are sloping roofs (see photographs), and a large balcony, but these shouldn't cause difficulties. Many families have stayed, including some with very young children and some with grandparents, and everyone seems to have been happy with the accommodation. Outside: Sunny balcony suitable for eating outdoors or sunbathing, with access from the living area or from Bedroom 1. It's to the rear of the building and quite private (the village is quite quiet anyway). House next to us but we see the mountain tops above it and we have an unobstructed view of Mt de Charbon. Close to all the village amenities including Carrefour "Contact" supermarket, boulangerie, bank with ATM, Post Office and Bar des 4 Chemins. Utility Room: The laundry, if you wish to use it, has an automatic washing machine, tumble dryer, airer, iron and ironing board. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Bedlinen and towels are provided along with a "standard" after-stay clean. (One-off charge per stay included in the total you pay, to cover costs incurred). Wifi included. Electricity included in summer rentals (small heating supp in winter) Other: The "living areas" also include a dining table and 6 chairs; large balcony with table and 6 chairs; and 2 deck chairs. We have a garage, and you are welcome to use our three bikes (at your own risk). The piste cyclable is only a few minutes by bike.

A Wonderful Vacation Spot to Call Home!

The Residence les Gentianes is a comfortable complete apartment home which is clean and well equipped. It's location is convenient to the pharmacy, grocery store, restaurants, and also Flyeo paragliding, and 1/4 mile from the Doussard paragliding zone. The Wi-fi is fast and easy to connect to. The owner is more than thorough in his communications and eager to offer information regarding the operation of equipment in the apartment and also the surrounding area attractions. There is a substantial balcony which faces the mountain range to the west of town. I would definitely consider staying again when visiting Doussard. I was a fabulous place to stay, and a great place to call home while away from home!

Coast/Beach:

Safe swimming in the clear fresh water of Lac d'Annecy, with supervision during the peak summer months and children's areas at several beaches around the lake. The grassy beach at Doussard/Bout du Lac is less than 5 minutes by car, and access to the beach and parking are both free (2016). Use the link at 'booking and further information' to see a photo of Doussard's beach on the 'details' page of our own web site. (Some of the other beaches around the lake might charge for access).

Travel:

Nearest airports are Geneva to the north with flights all year, and Grenoble, Chambery and Lyons to the south-west. Geneva-Annecy is 45 minutes to an hour (depending on the time of day) and Doussard a 25 minutes picturesque drive along the lake. Grenoble is a smaller airport and therefore a quicker getaway after landing and about 1 hour 45 minutes by Autoroute via Albertville. Driving time from Calais is about 8 hours, on autoroutes until about 40 minutes from Annecy.

Booking Notes:
Book provisionally by phone and/or email. The price indicated by Owners Direct is indicative because of the inflexibility of the pricing grid. Summer usually is Saturday-Saturday so for July and August please don't enter dates other than Saturdays for pricing purposes, although we might be able to be flexible about actual dates. Call or email me! See the link on this site to our own website, where there's an alternative enquiry form. As indicated elsewhere, 25% rental deposit secures the booking subject to the balance being paid 8 weeks before arrival. (That's 56 days, not 60 days as indicated by Owners Direct, but their on-line form doesn't have an option for 8 weeks!) I request a damages deposit at the time of the balance being due (usually a cheque that I simply keep in your file). I then send you the keys, so you have them before setting off and you can arrive without having to worry about being delayed en route or having to find my neighbours for access! Assuming all is well afterwards, I will return your damages deposit uncashed. Again, bookings usually are Sat-Sat in summer but more flexible off-peak. Ask me! Arrival from 1600; departure about 1000 to allow for cleaning.

Changeover Day:
Bookings are Saturday-Saturday, particularly between Easter and October and especially at school holiday times. Flexibility might be possible, however, depending on bookings. Please ask!

Notes on prices:
The price quoted includes all fees, including the rental, the expense I incur to provide your bedlinen/after-stay clean, and any other costs that I incur locally such as Internet access and electricity. If you are staying longer than a week, the total cost might be less than that indicated, as the bedlinen/after-stay clean costs me the same whether you stay for 3 nights or several weeks. School holidays, particularly in the Summer but also in February and at Easter, Whitsun and Christmas all tend to book sooner than at other times.
