About the property

Fisherman's House in Bouzigues, Near Pezenas, Herault, Languedoc Roussillon - Famous For Its Seafood, Perfect Clean Swimming In Front Of House

Our 18th century fisherman's house in the heart of the old village is the perfect place to experience traditional France or for a gourmet getaway. The house has loads of character and we've done our best to keep the house's layers of history. This is a lovingly restored family home, comfortable but with steep stone stairs leading to a wonderful terrace with views over the oyster beds and the lagoon.

The ground floor retains the traditional Cave where boats were kept but has been converted into a huge kitchen /dining room with a handmade teak kitchen and exposed stone walls. The twin bedroom and adjoining sitting room are on the 1st floor. The sitting room has a balcony looking onto the quiet street in the heart of the old village. There is a wood burning stove in the traditional tiled fireplace. The sofa bed in this room is a double. The master bedroom & bathroom are on the 2nd floor. The master bedroom has a double bed and a day bed where a child could also sleep. A balcony looks out over the lagoon. Finally the large roof terrace with 270 degree has spectacular views of the lagoon and hills and a sunny terrace room with kitchenette. Dawns, sunsets and the summer fireworks are unbeatable from here.

If you have small children or mobility issues please contact me to discuss the suitability of the house given the very steep stone stairs.

About P M Rossdale

Although English, my family have had a house in Bouzigues for more than 50 years. It is an incredibly special place.

I work in the charity sector and am based in London although I travel a lot for work. I try to get to Bouzigues as often as I can because wherever I go in the world I find that my mind keeps wandering back there.

P M Rossdale purchased this house in 1962

Why P M Rossdale chose Bouzigues

My family 1st came to Bouzigues in 1962. I've known the village my whole life and whilst it has changed over the years it has completely maintained its charm. Most of the changes have just added to the convenience (ATM, more cafes). Oyster & mussel production is still at the heart of village life. This means that although it receives a good number of visitors - mostly drawn by the gastronomy - it is not utterly dependent on tourism, it's an absolutely beautiful, working village. Whilst life is centred around the lagoon and all the wonderful things it offers - swimming, sailing, the hills behind- the garrigues, covered in thyme and scrub oak (and in the right season asphodels, wild asparagus, poppies...) are also a great place to walk. Great new cycle path connects the lagoon villages.

What makes this house unique

The house is absolutely traditional of the old village - a large cool Cave where traditionally the boat would have been kept, thick stone walls, steep stones stairs and a big fireplace. Staying here gives you a real flavour of old village life - it's close to the boulangerie for your morning baguette and pain au chocolat straight from the oven, but it's also just a few metres from the water. It has the best views of the lagoon and the hills from the rooftop terrace and is completely private. Friends always ask to watch the summer rooftop firework displays from here and guests have said how much they enjoy barbecuing fish with the lagoon as a backdrop.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hi Polly

Back to rainy London after a wonderful week away! Thanks very much, we

loved the house - the views from the terrace are amazing - and Bouzigues

and surrounding area are just perfect for a relaxing week away.

Eva was very helpful and all went swimmingly. Thanks for the restaurant

tips, we particularly liked the two you recommended also - you're right,

the chocolat fondant is seriously addictive!

Thanks again Polly, hope to stay with you again some time.

All the best

Beautiful house but vacation ruined In the last 10 minutes but horrible caretaker

  • 1 of 5

Although we love this house, our departure after 2 weeks was COMPLETELY ruined by the caretaker. She literally screamed at us for not washing the linens, which we were not asked to do. Completely unacceptable and a horrible end to our vacation. And the house was filthy when we arrived. We had to wash the toilets when we arrived.

Owner's Response: I regret that this was not a more positive experience on both sides. As you can see from other reviews, guests have always found the manager extremely warm and helpful. The manager assures me that the house was completely clean on your arrival. However, it's a shame that you did not raise any concerns with me or her on arrival so that we could rectify it if necessary. I also hope that there was not an emergency which meant that you had to leave the house in the disarray in which it was left. It's a shame that it has ended like this after your third visit.

Highly recommended

  • 5 of 5

This was a great place to spend part of our holiday. The house is in the old part of Bouzigues- a tall, spacious house which has clearly been restored with lots of thought and love. It had everything we needed for our stay, and Eva was nearby if we had any questions. Liaison with Polly, the owner was easy.

The terrace at the top of the house was super. We sat and watched the swifts and martins as it got dark.

We'd recommend Bouzigues for its lack of pretension and its friendliness. And some of the best fish we've had for a long time.

A return visit is definitely on the cards

A place to escape from the stresses in life!

  • 5 of 5

Bouzigues was a lucky find, it is a sleepy authentic French fishing village a million miles away from everyday life.

Polly's house is full of character and charm, although the 46 stairs from front door to roof terrace is not for the faint hearted (do not leave anything you want upstairs in the kitchen!!). The views from the roof terrace are spectacular and certainly worth the climb!

I would recommend this village and surrounding area to anyone who wants to escape the trappings of commercial tourism and for those who want to experience a taste of real French culture.

PS if anyone knows why the village church chimes twice every hour please let me know!

Owner's Response: So delighted you enjoyed the house and the village. It is indeed a bit of rare, real France by the sea. I've always thought that the church clock chimes twice on the hour to avoid confusion about the difference between 1 o'clock and half past the hour (when it only chimes once)… We can leave it as a village mystery though. Hope you'll return!

A house with a view and lots of character!

  • 5 of 5

Me and my family - husband, two teenagers and a 70+ mother - had a wonderful stay in this beautiful house! Since we stayed in rainy December, the house was really put to the test and we all fit in: the teenagers could stay up all night and listen to music at the top floor, while granny slept soundly one flight below; husband reading in the lovely library below her, and me hammering away on the laptop in the bottom-floor kitchen. Being Swedes, we love cleanliness and order, and we expect our appliances to always work at first try. We are used to being disappointed when abroad, but not this time! Rustic, charming AND functional. Clearly, you can have it both ways. The village itself and the area will speak for themselves once you get there, as will the sea-food and the view from the top-floor-terrace.

Wonderful house with views in great location.

  • 5 of 5

We used Bouzigues as a base to drive around to see the Cathar Castles, Pont du Gard, Orange, and the Carmarque. The house was a great base and was very cool to come into from the heat. The ground floor kitchen and dining space is excellent for preparing meals and talking and there is also a great patio balcony overlooking the estuary and the beach. It is a great place to have breakfast or dinner. The bed was comfortable and the room nice and cool. There are plenty of great local seafood restaurants, and a local bakery and convenience store. A highlight was watching the Bastille Day fireworks in all the towns across the bay, including Sete. Can't wait to go back and explore more of the area around but also to just spend a few relaxing days in Bouzigues itself.

It's worth the climb! (up the stairs)

  • 5 of 5

We were reluctant to give this lovely cottage the outstanding review it deserves as we wanted to keep it to ourselves. But since we've already booked another 2 weeks for next year it only seems fair to share our views. In the week we were there we hardly wanted to move from the roof terrace with its spectacular views, except to take a walk or visit a local bar for ice cold beers. Location was perfect, accommodation was tasteful and practical and we even got used to the 40+ stairs!
