Special interest holidays:
The area is popular with those who like to walk and cycle . There are links from my website giving more information including routes and cycling and walking services (see below).
The is a downstairs lobby in which bicycles can be stored securely.
Beaches: They are all good! The world famous resort of St Tropez is 16 miles away and the beautiful Mediterranean beaches of the Cote d'Azur offer a wide variety of marine sports and summer activities.Pampelone is the most famous but we found the beaches around Cavaliere sur Mer and Cap Negre to be the nicest! Also offers good snorkelling opportunities - as to any of the coves on the coast road towards Cannes from St Maxime. The world famous resort of St Tropez is 16 miles away and the beautif
La Garde Freinet is 25 mins south of the A8 and within easy reach of Nice, Toulon and Marseille airports. It is one hour's drive from Cannes and Antibes and two hours from Monaco.
Car Hire is essential. Alternatively Paul Barstow on +33 494 56 3955 or +33 679058098 can arrange for an airport pickup.
The TGV also runs to the south of France such as Aix en Provence. Useful information and links are on my website.
Nice and Marseille are each less than 75 minutes drive. About one hour from Cannes and Antibes. 2 hours from Monaco and two and a half hours from the Italian border. St Tropez and the coast is about 20 minutes drive. Those flying in to Toulon are even closer. Taking the train to les Arcs which is about 30 minutes away is also an option.
Shopping: The village has a range of small food and craft shops as well as a pharmacy and a couple of boulangeries. There are economically priced restaurants and some of the more expensive variety.
Try the big Geant supermarket en route to St Tropez to stock up. (You can't miss it!). There is also the excellent Le Clerc Ssupermarket in Cogolin. Do not miss the local village market days in the area (details of which are available in the house).
Wine: The local co-operatives in Grimaud and Cogolin both have an excellent selection of local wine. There are several five-litre containers in the house you may use to fill up with wine - but these are available cheaply from the Co-op if you forget /need more (!)
Travelling to St Tropez: Although both roads and parking are good in St Tropez, highly recommended is catching the boat from across the bay at St Maxime quay. (Particularly on market day as it can get busy!) The trip offers a beautiful view of the whole of the bay and the other boats, some of which must be seen to be believed! There are also tours of the coast available from the Quay, fishing tours and excursions to the stunning national parks of Port Cros and Cape Lardier!
Abbey du Thoronet: Is just off the A8 before the turn off to the village. It is a beautiful old restored monastery with is breathtaking in its simplicity and has wonderful acoustics! Lovely gardens too! It is worth visiting the Monastery of Chatreuse de la vierne in Collobrieres
Gorge du Verdon: Takes about 1 ½ hours to get there but is breathtaking! The roads once there are not for the faint hearted. You can hire boats, kayaks and canoes in the Gorge.
Monte Carlo and Monaco: Monaco is a 2-hour drive and boats can be taken from Nice. Both run ferries along the Mediterranean Coast and to Corsica. (Tip: Take a picnic, it's not cheap!)
