About the property

Traditional House in Rociao, Nr. Miranda do Corvo, Portugal - Upgraded Local House With Comfortable, Well Equipped Accommodation

’O Retiro Pequeno’, our little retreat is private but not isolated. It is situated in the woodlands along a made up forestry road, five minutes drive from Miranda do Corvo. It has outstanding views across the countryside. The house offers very comfortable and well equipped accommodation for couples seeking a holiday of bird song, natural beauty and privacy. The setting will appeal to those who like to walk, swim (in the private secluded pool), ride, enjoy mountain scenery but most of all wish to have a break 'away from it all' in total comfort. There are many sites of great historical interest within easy reach, also local river beaches, and the sea just 45 minutes drive away. The house is just as suitable for the winter with central heating and wood burning stove and good supply of olive wood. Regretfully we do not accept children.

About Maggie Somekh

We live in England on the Isle of Wight but have this lovely house in Portugal, as our second home. We enjoy letting the property when we are not there and giving others the opportunity to enjoy the peace and beauty of the setting.

Maggie Somekh purchased this house in 2004

Why Maggie Somekh chose Miranda do Corvo

The house is truly away from it all on the edge of the forest but with spectacular views over the valley below. When we saw the view we knew we had to buy this village house and renovate it. We have not regretted this move.

What makes this house unique

Despite being very private we are only a few minutes up the hill from the well appointed town in the valley below and from there, directly onto motorway to many places of interest. We are within relatively easy reach of Porto and Lisbon and only 15 minutes drive from Coimbra.

The gardens are now matured from the time the aerial photo was taken and full of fruit trees and olives and the courtyards are also cultivated providing a delightful private garden especially around the walled swimming pool.

Guestbook comments from the manager

"A great place to come to unwind and enjoy some peace and quiet".

"Pool is gorgeous, we love the quiet life".

"Wow what a fantastic place. We have had 18 years of self-catering holidays, at home and abroad but none have compared to the comfort and facilities offered by your villa. Thank you for letting us use your home."

Stunningly beautiful!

This place is absolutely brilliant. The layout of the property is great with the pool through the archway and beautiful flowers dotted around. Huge kitchen, balcony to eat dinner and watch sunsets, comfortable bed and paved outside area for games etc. Car definitely necessary but lots of things to see and do nearby (we visited the mini zoo in Miranda do corvo, lots of river beaches, Coimbra for wonderful food and fig de foz for beaches), but you could easily spend a very content week relaxing here without doing much at all. Unfortunately the internet didn't work very well but we didn't really mind so didn't ask anyone to fix it. Malcolm was brilliant and showed us around before leaving us to ourselves for the rest of our stay. Next time we'll try to make it up to his house for the glass of wine he offered! Thanks all x

A real home from home. Very well equipped - everything you could possibly need for your stay. The pool and courtyard area are wonderful, and watching the sunset from the upstairs balcony with a glass of wine in hand was a highlight!

The photos do not do this property any justice. The house, garden and pool are immaculately maintained. If you're looking for a holiday away from it all, then this is the place. The views are breaking and watching the sunsets is a must. Some Portuguese is essential because of the rural location and a car would be helpful. Would definitely return to this beautiful home. A home from home.

Cadre parfait pour des vacances! Description correspondant bien à ce qui etait attendu. Dommage que nous n'ayons pas pu accéder à la piscine alors que le temps était magnifique.

Owner's Response: We are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay. We close down the pool at the end of September because the lower night temperatures normally make it too cold to swim. Kind regards Maggie

Special interest holidays:

Surrounded by beautiful countryside with lots of off road trails into the hills and magnificant views. Specialist maps are provided for walkers of local terrain. There are also well established riding stables in the local town. Information about river swimming in some beautiful settings is also provided. A local guide book is constantly being updated as we find new and interesting places to visit. A restaurant guide is also being gradually added to.

Mountain bikes can be hired from Coimbra, details in the information book provided, to take advantage of the many mountain trails locally starting from our back door.

Atlantic beaches with miles of white sand and good seafood lunches are within 45 minutes drive. Plenty of choice in the guide books but Figera do Foz is probably nearest. Aveiro which is Portugal's Venice is a bit further North and worth a visit, also Nazare to the south. There is also a good choice of lake and river swimming near by with much local investment being put in in the last few years to the development of river beaches and picnic areas. These are in the local information book provided.

Fly to either Lisbon or Oporto (Oporto is nearer) with a drive on the country’s A1 motorway to Condeixa and thence to Miranda do Corvo. The journey from Lisbon takes about 1.45 hours with Oporto being about 1.3 hours. There is also a good, clean and efficient, low cost train service, from both to Coimbra, however a hire car will be required. More information available when booking.

The house is 5 minutes drive to the busy well appointed town of Miranda do Corvo. It has a number of Supermarkets, a Post Office, Banks, a Cinema, Dry Cleaners, 12 restaurants and a Market on a Wednesday. There is also a bus service to Coimbra. Coimbra is half an hour away and is Portugal's oldest city it is known as the City of Knowledge. It has good shopping in the "Baixa" a maze of lanes with little shops, then lunch by the river to recover.

Further Details:

Other trips to consider include Conimbriga a very well preserved Roman City only 20 minutes drive away, here you can spend a couple of hours wandering around the huge site and follow it with lunch at their restaurant; Tomar where the Knights Templar built an amazing Castle/monastery on the hill top, again a spectacular place to spend a couple of hours wandering around and imagining the Knights Templar going to the chapel there on their horses! They have a delightly simple restaurant overlook orange groves; Bucaco Palace an exquisite example of Mauliene Arquitecture set in the ancient Forest, which has excellent walks, a military museum and the place where Wellington spent the night after the famous battle there, and also very good restaurant; Visit the Port houses at Porto; Or just enjoy the hill walking, bird watching (Eagles and Buzzards included) and local nature. Information about river swimming in some beautiful local settings we have found, is provided. A local guide book is constantly being updated as we find new and interesting places to visit. Miranda itself has a newly developed river beach and interval training circuit . Next to this is a well established riding stables. There is also a large very unpopulated indoor swimming pool in the town which is ideal during colder weather and costs 1 euro to get in. If you like four wheel drive, off-roading this is the place with the hills opened up by forestry and access roads to the windmills providing great starting points for walks with fabulous views. A restaurant guide is also being gradually added to the information available at the house with our reviews and sample prices.
