About the property

Villa in Begur, Costa Brava - Pool, Jacuzzi, Incredible Views from All Rooms and Terraces

Hillside house with stunning sea views from all rooms, just outside the magical town of Begur in the Costa Brava. The spacious family home is available to rent year round. Situated in a quiet, secluded neighbourhood with scattered luxury villas on a forested hill. No high-rise hotels nearby. Begur, a beautifully preserved mediaeval town, is 90 minutes north of Barcelona, and 45 minutes from Gerona, in the unspoilt portion of the Spanish coast. The three-story house sleeps six comfortably, and has two balconies and four sunny patios. The garden area includes a private pool and a jacuzzi (particularly welcome during off season lets). Sea views from the balconies are superb. Five secluded beaches are accessible by car, with the closest five minutes away. Five excellent golf courses nearby, playable all year round. Begur, with its charming hilltop castle, is within walking distance and has fantastic restaurants and boutiques along its narrow, ancient streets.

About Gerard DeGroot

We live in the magical Scottish town of St Andrews where Jerry is a history professor and a freelance journalist and Sharon runs her own media relations business, with clients in the oil, high tech and tourist industries. We have two children, aged 20 and 23. We love St Andrews because of its tranquility and charm, not to mention the fact that we hardly need a car. Our home in Begur is essentially a Spanish translation of what we have in Scotland, namely a comfortable, cozy hideaway in a quiet neighbourhood, near a town that combines cutting edge classiness with intoxicating historical charm. We love travel, great food and fine wine, interests which influenced our choice when we came to buy a house in Spain. The only thing wrong with our life is that we don't get to Spain often enough.

Gerard DeGroot purchased this villa in 2004

Why Gerard DeGroot chose Begur

We had been planning to buy a house in Marbella, but were put off by the fact that it didn't seem 'real', but instead something manufactured for wealthy tourists. We happened upon Begur entirely by accident when Jerry booked a golfing holiday in Spain and had his accommodation changed at the last minute, ending up at the Hotel Aigua Blava, about 10 minutes from Begur. On the first morning, he was sitting in the charming square enjoying a coffee and phoned home to say: 'This is where we have to buy a house.' A month later the whole family came out to look for a house to buy. We were scheduled to see eight properties on the first day. Casa Buena Vista was the fifth. When we got inside and saw the stunning views, we quit looking. We had found everything we wanted.

What makes this villa unique

Every time we go to our house, we love it more and congratulate ourselves on buying it. We love the fact that we can enjoy all the benefits of one of the loveliest towns in Catalan Spain, but are still conveniently distanced from the town itself in a quiet neighbourhood walking distance away. The same goes with the beaches - they are gorgeous, but it is nice being that short distance away, especially in the summer. We love our house because, the minute we walk in the door, we get that wonderful feeling of decompression and calm. We slow down, breathe deeper, and feel no pressure to do anything other than relax. One of the nicest things about the place is being able to sit in the jacuzzi, watch the moon reflected on the Med, and just let that warm feeling of contentment engulf us.

Guestbook comments from the owner

My wife and I searched long and hard for just the right place to spend our 25th anniversary. We'd heard great things about Begur, so we knew that was where we wanted to go, but found it hard sifting through all the properties available. But then, a friend had stayed at Casa Buenavista and recommended it to us. From the beginning, we found Jerry the perfect host -- he responded in super fast time and was always ready with helpful advice whenever we had a question. When we arrived, we found a perfect house in perfect condition. I have to say that it would be hard to find a cleaner place. The new kitchen is superbly well equipped and all the other rooms are furnished and decorated in a simple, clean and homey way. It didn't seem at all like a holiday home, more like a real home. The pool was spotlessly clean and the cleaner came twice during the week we stayed. The brand new jacuzzi was also wonderful -- much better than we anticipated and no extra charge for heating. It would be difficult to find a better holiday home at the price, which we found to be much lower than other properties in the area. We would recommend this house to others and hopefully come back before too long.

Notes on accommodation: Air-conditioning in sitting room, with ceiling fans in bedrooms. Tastefully decorated throughout with wonderfully comfortable beds. Sea breezes keep the property at a pleasant temperature, even at the height of summer. The neighbourhood is very quiet, even during the high season. Outside: Swimming pool: (3x6 metres) and jacuzzi. Barbecue, picnic table and lounge chairs. The pool is recently completed and is surrounded by a spacious tiled deck. It is reached by a few steps from the terrace where the jacuzzi is situated. The sea views from the pool and surrounding terrace are stunning. The jacuzzi, a rarity in Spain, is wonderful for unwinding after a busy day shopping or at the beach. Guests absolutely love it, especially on dark, star-filled nights with the nearby Med glinting in the moonlight. There is a lovely patio area in front of the house, another midway down, a third by the jacuzzi and a fourth by the big pool. There's always at least one patio in sun and one in shade. Utility Room: BBQ and garden furniture in separate storage unit/shed. Beach games and other outdoor equipment. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Linens and towels not included, but can be rented for £16 per person, per stay. Villa is always clean on arrival. Additional cleaning can be arranged for a fee during guest stays. Efficient, friendly and super-reliable property manager located in Begur. Other: All bedrooms have views of the sea. Master bedroom on floor 2 features French doors with windows that open onto the terrace. Lots of light in all rooms.

Best holiday rental ever

  • 5 of 5

We like to stay in holiday homes rather than hotels, so we have a lot of experience renting. I can honestly say that this was the most pleasant experience we have had with renting. The enquiry process went incredibly smoothly, thanks entirely to Jerry's lightning quick and very informative responses. We always have a lot of questions, yet Jerry answered them all with politeness and patience. Then, when we got to the house, we found it spotlessly clean and very well equipped. The furnishings are simple but tasteful, with some nicely quirky prints, posters, and paintings on the wall to add a bit of splash. I was surprised at how well stocked the kitchen was -- far nicer than any rental I've stayed in. The pool and jacuzzi were both perfection. And, of course, the view from all parts of the house is superb.

We wanted to do some cycling while we were in Begur and asked Jerry for information on where bikes might be rented. He didn't just give us the name of a shop but instead arranged for bikes to be delivered to the house so that they were there when we arrived and were picked up when we departed. He also provided information on nice places to cycle to -- and places to avoid.

So, all in all, it was a superb trip. Houses in Begur can be very expensive, but, comparing prices and facilities, we found that Casa Buenavista was a bargain. We will definitely return and tell our friends about our wonderful holiday.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for the lovely review; it's means so much to us that guest enjoy our house as we put a lot of attention into making it nice. I'm also glad you appreciated the bikes: it is a great place to cycle, though not for the faint-hearted!

High on a hill in the Garden of Eden

  • 5 of 5

This is a wonderful, serene, clean, quiet, and spacious house, framed by a superb location.

As an, admittedly, spoiled American, who is not used to feeling "off the grid", my only suggestions are:

- TV and available wireless within

- Eliminate parking in the street, by creating a concrete/stone ramp accessing the house parking spot, like the neighbors all have, without having to have a jeep.

The owner and his partner, are very sensitive to a traveler's needs, and doing all the correct things to ensure a wonderful, eventful vacation. My wife and I, are, truly, grateful.

Beautiful spot

  • 4 of 5

We had a great stay here in mid-October. The house is spacious and has perfect views. The hot tub was great for cool nights, and we did jump in the pool is a great size. All of the outdoor spaces are really nice with a good sense of privacy and lovely landscaping. The kitchen works really well and the bathrooms are nice as well. The owners were very quick to respond when we had some malfunctioning outdoor lights and they were always happy to answer any questions. It's a perfect place from which to explore many areas along the costa brava and inland. The suggestion list they supply is spot on. Would fully recommend a stay here in any season. The only minor negative was that there was no soap or trash bags in the house so we had to buy those.

The listing and photos are very accurate. The owners are great, the house was very clean and comfy.

Car: recommended

Many lovely coves for swimming and relaxing. Most with a handful of restaurants that offer authentic Spanish cuisine. Not a chip shop in sight! Five minutes drive to several beaches nearby, including Sa Riera, Sa Tuna, Fornells and Aiguablava.

Girona, Spain is closest airport, just 45km to house. Fly cheap on Ryanair from most UK airports. Also EasyJet to Barcelona. Barcelona airport is a 90 mins - 2 hour drive from the house. From USA, Continental has direct flights from Newark, NJ to Barcelona.

One mile drive or walk to centre of Begur. Other villages and towns like medieval Pals are only a 10 min drive. Day trips to Salvador Dali's home and museum are well worth the 1/2 hour drive to Pubol or 1 hour drive to Figueres. Further out on the coast, visit his summer home in Cadaques, a beautiful little fishing village. Girona is a lovely medieval, walled city with a stunning cathedral. Walk the town walls and see the university. Great shopping, restaurants and easy parking that's free!

Further Details:

We have a property manager in Begur who can help with questions about the area or the property. He speaks excellent English, French, Dutch, Spanish and Catalan. In addition, the tourist information office in the town is outstanding. It is recommended that guests hire a car for their entire stay, in order to get the most out of this extraordinarily beautiful area. A few guests have, however, gone without a car and made do with a combination of buses, taxis and walking. During the high season, there is a regular bus every half hour from the town centre to the main beaches at Sa Riera and Aiguablava.
