Cottage in Ourique, Alentejo, Central Portugal - Central For Visiting East/West Coasts, Mountains & Lakes 8713/AL
Welcome to our Monte. It is the ideal place to have some 'me' time. Get away from the pressures of modern life and step back 30 years. The self catering apartment forms part of the Monte which had been sympathetically restored with beams and feather board ceilings; thick walls that insulate, having a cooling effect in the summer whilst retaining the heat when the log burner is stoked up in the colder months. Open the triple paned french doors in the lounge and let in the sun. The other rooms have stable doors where you can watch the storks' nest. There is a private garden area at the back but you are welcome to wander.
.The Monte's garden area has been landscaped with the Mediterranean plants that flourish here. There are views over the rolling plains with the cork trees; the sound of the farm animals and wildlife; the beautiful sunsets; and blue skies.

This property is far and above the best appointed we have ever stayed in, a total home from home.
The picture is exactly as it is portrayed, beautifully clean, well maintained, and very well stocked with pots, pans. glasses etc., there was also milk in the fridge, washing up liquid, lavatory rolls, and some tea, sugar and coffee to see us through our first day.
Richard and Jan welcomed us as we drove up, and showed us their property. They were charming, friendly and helpful with tips re the area and facilities.
The local supermarket had just closed for refurbishment, but there were others in nearby towns. We went out to a small eaterie recommended by Richard in the town, and had a lovely meal. I have already recommended them to my freinds and family.

We had a lovely holiday and Richard and Jan were very supportive but never intrusive and in actual fact you rarely knew or remember that they were living next door. It was peaceful and so relaxing. We were very pleased with it all and would highly recommend this property to anybody if they want to be in the true Portugal but you will need a car but the cottage is not that far from most resorts if you have wheels and it was really nice to go to these 'hot spots' but then be able to get away and find some peace and quiet. Absolutely lovely.!!!!!!!
The most clean and well equipped little place we have ever stayed
We had an excellent experience at O Ninho. Our family runs holiday cottages in the UK and so we usually find something that is missing or not up to standard when we stay away self catered but Richard and Jan's place was faultless; it had everything we needed, and more, was spotlessly clean and really well thought through. Richard and Jan were very accommodating, kindly loaning us BBQ supplies, forgiving us a broken piece of crockery and generally providing us with a great self catering, rural Portugese holiday experience. Thanks very much!! Chris & Claire
A beautiful and peaceful vacation cottage
Richard and Jan are wonderful people and wonderful hosts. We had one of the most restful vacations we have ever had at their cottage. The cottage is clean, new and has everything you need. It's location in the countryside is perfect...great views, no traffic or noise...only the birds singing. We were interested in exploring property and homes in the region and Richard and Jan were extremely helpful in providing information and showing us around. The village of Orique is not a big tourist town so it still has that quiet laid back charm you seldom find, but there are nice grocery stores and restaurants just 5-10 minutes away. We would re-book in a minute and recommend it to anyone looking for a place in south central Portugal.
Tudo 5 estrelas. Graça e Paulo
From the Owner
“We loved that it is rural with great views but only 7 kms to Ourique with all the amenities and festas. Also it is very central for travel. It is even better now they have resurfaced the road to Ourique.”
Activity and Interests
The scenic West coast is more relaxed and generally less commercialised than the South. The beaches mingle with the rugged cliffs. There are the safe sandy beaches, the ports for fishermen, the rolling waves for the surfers plus many restaurants/cafes for you to enjoy the local cuisine. The Algarve to the South is a more populated area with much history and beautiful beaches plus many themed restaurants and pubs. Enjoy coastal walks and swimming for some gentle exercise.
Air: many budget flights on offer by different operators dependent on which route you prefer. Car: there are an abundance of car hire companies that enable you to pick up and return your car to the airport. Sea: there are ferries to Santander in North Spain and also the French ferry ports if you are touring Europe.
Nearest vila: Ourique 7kms.
North: Castro Verde 14kms - mkt 1st Wed of mth. Beja 58kms - largest district town.
East: Almodovar 17kms - unusual metal artwork roundabouts. Mertola 56kms - castle on top and river runs through.

Ourique the local town is 5 mins drive away and has orange tree lined streets and an observation point (miradouro) situated in the castle at the highest point showing outstanding 360 degree views. Vineyards: there are local vineyards if you wish to taste the local Alentejo wines which are becoming more popular worldwide. The brown road signs with ‘Adega’ will direct you. Gastronomy: there are many tasty cheeses to enjoy, some served with honey for starters with the homemade breads. The black pig ‘preto porco’ is an Alentejo speciality and the alfresco barbecued Chicken 'frango' also has it's own delicious flavour. If you like olives there are many varieties to try. Unlike the more expensive coastal areas food is very good value for money. You can buy wines in the supermarket for around 1.50 euros and less. A bottle of beer in a café is about 80 cents. A meal will cost about 9 euros. Local activities include fishing, swimming, horse riding, local festas and feiras, bird watching, hiking, historic monuments, walking.

- Notes on accommodation: There are fans available in the summer. The log burner for heating in the winter, but there are a variety of heaters if you do not want to light the fire. There is a fire extinguisher, fire blanket and smoke alarm. Outside: The Monte is surrounded by a gravel patio area with planted garden. There is a BBQ, outside garden furniture, and sun loungers. Every year we have a family of storks in our large olive tree. This year they had 3 offspring who were learning to fly in July. There is no pool because it is in an ecological area, but it is in a area ideal for bird watchers with hoopoes, great bustard, storks and many more. There are some binoculars in the cupboard. See our 'Bird' page on our website for species. There is a Sports Center eight miles away which has 3 pools and cost at 1.60€ per person per day. There is a grassed area and loungers around the pool and a lifeguard. There is also a cafe on site if you aren't taking a picnic. The sun going down in the evening in a spectacular array of reds and pinks is beautiful with the sound of the owls and rural animals. Utility Room: There is a washing machine, extra freezer space, ironing board, clothes airer, available for use in the 'balloon house' (contains a container that pumps water up from the bore hole) which is an outside building close to the monte. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels (excluding beach towels) and linen are provided. The property is cleaned at changeover of guests. Other: The dining room has pine furniture and a stable door with a retractable fly/mosquito door
