Les Contamines Montjoie is good for both winter and summer holidays - some of our visitors come back year after year. The village lies at 1164m altitude, at the end of the quiet, beautiful river valley of Montjoie, an easy 15-minute drive from the Geneva motorway. Close to Mont Blanc, Megeve and Chamonix, the valley offers spectacular views, wonderful summer walking or touring, and good snow for winter holidays. Now a summer and winter holiday destination, its agricultural life still continues, with bell-clanking cattle grazing in the alpine summer meadows. Our upper ground floor apartment faces south-west and is in the village centre, with views out across the valley and up to the mountains above. Shops, cafes, restaurants and other facilities are only five minutes walk away. A 10-15 minute walk or a 5-minute ride on the village shuttle bus takes you to mountain lifts and ski slopes. The village is surrounded by marked walking trails, gentle or energetic.

About Moura and Martin

Thank you very much for your interest in our apartment in Les Contamines Montjoie village, which is in Haute Savoie in the beautiful northern French Alps, not far from Mont Blanc, Megeve and Chamonix.

Our names are Moura MacDonagh and Martin Plimsoll. Moura is a freelance translator from French to English, as well as speaking some Italian and Spanish and a little German. Martin is a retired teacher of geography but keeps busy with charity and arts administration work - and golf. He speaks some French but more Italian.

We are both walkers and skiers and have had great summer and winter holidays in the Alps and elsewhere over many years. We look forward to hearing from you soon!

Why Moura and Martin chose St. Gervais - Megeve area

We initially chose Les Contamines Montjoie for its proximity to Mont Blanc (good snow record in winter), giving us great winter skiing. However it's also great for summer walking and touring.

It is easy to reach, as it is in the northern French Alps and only 15 minutes drive off the A40 motorway to Geneva/Chamonix. Also, the local village people are friendly and settled - we meet the same helpful people each year in bars, restaurants and on the ski lifts! Les Contamines Montjoie is at the southern end of a mountain valley, so there is no through traffic other than people coming to walk/ski from the village. It is a good place to stay in the winter and summer, for both adults and children who like to relax, play, walk, ski or explore this beautiful area.

What makes this apartment unique

Our apartment is in the village centre, about 5 minutes walk from the shops. Its balcony faces south-west which makes the apartment light and sunny. We have a private underground parking space (keeps your car cool in summer and frost-free in winter!). We have a friendly, reasonably-priced bar-restaurant nearby, the Op Traken, which we use as our 'local', though there are plenty of other places too in the village. The village shuttle bus stops close to the apartment, for the 5-minute ride to the ski lifts in winter.

Position: there are apartments in Les Contamines Montjoie located closer to the ski lifts, but many of these are less sunny than ours, and are further away from the main village centre.

Notes on accommodation: The apartment and building are furnished and maintained to a good standard and inspected after each rental. Electric heating, with individual thermostat radiators. Automatic fresh air ventilation system; clean air and no draughts. Outside: Double-length south-west facing balcony outside dining and lounge areas. Balcony chairs and table (stored in basement). Private covered parking space beneath the building, plus shared parking outside the apartments. Summer swimming in sun-heated lake at village leisure/sports centre Le Pontet, 5 mins drive/15 mins walk. Indoor/outdoor swimming pool in St Gervais-les-Bains, 15 mins drive. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Duvets, pillows and blankets are provided. Bed-linen and towels not provided, can be hired in village. Perfect location in a perfect village

This little appt sits in the heart of the beautiful village of Les Contamines - right next to great shops, ice rink and restaurants - and with a ski bus (every 10-15 mins) right outside; the perfect location as long as you don't mind a 5 min bus ride to the lifts.

The appt is very small but somehow manages to create 2 private bedroom spaces for the adults and kids. Bunk beds were excellent, and the sofa bed was adequate for my ski weary body.

The kitchen's well equipped but would benefit from a microwave. Additional shelving would also be handy. Alas there is no room for a dishwasher.

There's a separate private locker room for your ski gear, sledges etc

All in all, highly recommended

Brilliant

Martin and Moura's apartment is lovely and Les Contamines-Montjoie is a beautiful village. The apartment is well situated for access to the ski lifts and the centre of the village (bars, restaurants etc) The private parking is also a plus in the busy winter period. I would highly recommend their apartment and Les Contamines as a holiday destination.

a lovely village

Les Contamines is a lovely village with excellent skiing. Martin and Moura's apartment is a great place for a couple to stay - comfortable and clean, always warm and with all the things you need. Ok with family too. So highly recommended ! We've also stayed there in the summer - amazing walking all around you - and if you have a car, lots of places to visit.

Ideal Apartment for Winter and Summer

We have stayed in this apartment for a number of years, principally for 2 weeks skiing in the winter, but also in the summer. From the apartment you can enjoy extensive views across the valley to the mountains with the bonus of a balcony on which to sit on warm, sunny days. The apartment is always warm, clean and well maintained. There is plenty of kitchen equipment should you wish to self-cater or if you prefer the highly recommended Lop Traken restaurant is adjacent, providing an extensive menu including regional dishes. Secure underground parking is available and access to a 'cave' provides additional storage for ski equipment etc. Situated in an unspoilt valley it is an ideal location with all local amenities, bakers, butcher and supermarkets, within easy walking distance. Possibly the only "naturally frozen" outdoor ice rink in France is situated in the valley bottom directly below the apartment and we have been fortunate to watch both curling competitions and ice hockey matches there. It is sometimes possible to have a go at curling yourself with guidance from members of the local curling club. The Tourist Office provides local and regional information and the staff are helpful and happy to converse in English. We use the local InterSport shop for hiring and maintenance of winter sports equipment and have always found the staff exceptional in the advice and service they provide.

Superb holiday

The apartment in Les Contamines has everything that you will need in order to enjoy a wonderful holiday. There was more than enough room for my wife and I and the apartment was well-maintained and very clean. It is perfectly situated in the middle of this lovely alpine village and there are many beautiful walks nearby through superb scenery and most include welcome bars/restaurants where you can get anything from a cooling drink to a full-blown lunch. Les Contamines is very picturesque and has several restaurants and bars as well as all the food and clothes shops that you will need.

There are also many interesting places within easy reach such as Lake Annecy and Chamonix, as well as a lovely train ride through wonderful scenery from nearby St. Gervais.

I would not hesitate to recommend this apartment to anyone who enjoys fantastic scenery, good food, and a relaxing and varied holiday.

Great spot in a great location

We stayed here for two weeks last year. The appartment is not huge but is comfortable and has everything you need. The views from the balcony are beautiful, the shops and restaurants are all within walking distance. It is in an ideal location for a walking holiday, we had some beautiful days locally in the valley and also higher in the mountains around. The village is very pretty and it is easy to travel around by car or on the local bus.

A short distance away there is a lovely park which has a lot of activities for families including rock climbing, outdoor swimming, tennis and a pplay park suitable for younger children.
