Apartment in Dubrovnik Old Town, Croatia - 1 min from the Cathedral, 10 mins from the Beach

Set on the first floor of one Dubrovnik old town's attractive limestone buildings, this premium quality, spacious, newly-refurbished, air-conditioned, three bedroom apartment is just a stone's throw from Dubrovnik's main attractions, yet is tucked away in a quiet side street to ensure a restful stay.

The apartment is bright and airy and has exposed stone walls and original oak-beamed ceilings. There is plenty of room for up to six people to stay: a master bedroom with a spacious ensuite shower room and walk-in wardrobe; a further double bedroom, and single bedroom with truckle beds (one of these only suitable for children), plus the master bathroom, with bath and shower. There is a large kitchen, dining and living space, with everything you need for self-catering, entertaining and relaxing. We have high speed WiFI internet and cable TV for English-speaking channels.

The apartment is just two minutes' walk from Dubrovnik old town's harbour. The nearest sand and pebble beach is just a 10 minute stroll away through Dubrovnik's charming, pedestrianised streets.

About Lucy Houlton

We visited Croatia for the first time in 2005, with the idea that we'd invest in a new build apartment somewhere on the coast near Dubrovnik. On the first night we went for a meal in the Old Town and that was it... there was obviously never going to be anywhere else for us - we were captivated by its atmosphere and beauty and were the slightly over-stretched owners of an old, neglected apartment that needed a complete overhaul by the end of our break. We now visit with our two girls whenever we can, but are happy to share our second home with others when we can't.

As professionals working in London we know how to advise you on how to enjoy your visit to Dubrovnik.

Being in the centre of the old town means that the views are stunning, everything is so easy but you do not feel like you are in a big city. The children can safely play on the streets while we sit in the cafes and watch the world go by.

The choice of beaches is great and there's masses to see in the Old Town.

The property is conveniently located being 1 min from the main cathedral and 2 mins from the Stradun. We often pop back to the apartment many times during the day on our visits.

Notes on accommodation: The air conditioning system allows for efficient heating and cooling. The apartment is set on the first floor, but is in the lower part of the city, so its minimal steps (38) means it is suitable for both children and older visitors. There are some toys and children's dvds provided. As well as a washing machine, drying rack and ironing facilities, there is a washing line, accessible from the apartment's bedroom windows, for drying washing. No Smoking, No Pets. Quite oasis in busy Dubrovnik

Clean, well equipment and furnished apartment.

Great local agent on hand who could not have been more helpful.

It well placed for local boat and bus trips. No need for expensive private tours.

Only down was it was a bit dark inside the apartment

Killer location in Old City of Dubrovnik

We loved the location of this place. It was right in the middle of everything. The managers Dube and her husband were friendly, helpful, and responsive when we had a few glitches. No WiFi was the only downside to our stay (our 3 teens whined about that). Highly recommended.

Lovely apartment in the perfect location!

The apartment was very comfortable for 5 adults, and wonderfully centrally located. We were steps away from the Cathedral, the Church of St. Blaise, and the Rector's Palace, in the south east corner of the Old City.

The apartment manager, Marija, arranged a ride from the airport for us. She met us at the city gate and escorted us to the apartment, even though it was 11pm when we arrived in Dubrovnik. Her English is excellent and she offered many great suggestions for things to do and places to eat. The owner, Lucy, also provided us with a three page welcome letter with suggestions and recommendations, as well as detailed walking directions from the two main city entrances. Lucy and Marija both put us very much at ease even before we landed.

The rooms were spacious and comfortable, and all rooms had air conditioning. The windows have a view of an alley and the stone building next door. Even though there were things going on in the city until well into the night (especially on the weekend) the apartment was surprisingly quiet. We tended to keep the windows and shutters closed most of the time because of the heat -- it was around 85 F (30 C) every day we were there, and didn't get much below 70 F (21 C) even at night.

The apartment is only a block or two away from a small grocery store and farmer's market, and the kitchen was very well-equipped, so we were able to prepare several meals at home. As an American, I would have appreciated a coffee maker in the apartment, but there are so many coffee shops with the amazing Croatian coffee within a few blocks that it was not an issue.

Something to be aware of: the electrical breaker will trip if you are using all the air conditioners, the hot water heater, and the electric teakettle all at once, so use your appliances strategically.

Honestly, I was very apprehensive at first -- this was our first ever trip to Europe, and I was a bit leery of sending money to England for an apartment in Croatia with no reviews. But I found both the owner and VRBO to be very helpful and informative, and the experience exceeded our expectations. Should we come to Dubrovnik again, we would be delighted to stay here a second time!

Coast/Beach:

Dubrovnik Old Town's pebble and sand beach is a 10 minute stroll from the apartment. In high season, the beach is split into two: one side has sunbeds and parasols (which you pay for), the other side has no such facilities, but is free. There is a smart beach bar and restaurant, with toilets and beachside shower. There are other beaches within easy reach - just 10 minutes away, either by local boat or bus. Full details are available in the apartment.

Travel:

Dubrovnik International airport is a scenic, 20 minute drive away. Scheduled flights are met by a local bus to the Old Town for around £4.00, or you can take a taxi from the airport, which costs around £25 to the Old Town. The nearest port is Gruz (Dubrovnik's modern harbour), and you can take boats to many of Croatia's islands and Bari, in Italy. Gruz is a short taxi/bus ride from the Old Town. If much of your visit is to be spent in and around Dubrovnik, you will not need to hire a car.

Distances:

Lokrum island, a UNESCO protected site, which houses the ruins of a former monastery and fort, plus a restaurant and plenty of secluded beaches, is a fifteen minute boat ride away - take the boat from the Old Town harbour.

Cavtat, a picturesque village, set around a harbour, is about 50 minutes boat ride from the harbour. It has lots of harbourside cafes, rocky and pebble beaches, and pleasant, waterside walks.

The Elafiti islands are great for day trips - take a boat from the old harbour.

Further Details:

The nearest supermarket to the apartment is two minutes' walk away, and there are numerous butchers, bakers, fishmongers, off licences, restaurants, cafes, bars nearby, too. We have a list of recommended places in the apartment, most of which are set in the charming, pedestrianised walkways and squares of the famous Old Town.

There are many banks and cashpoints within the old town, as well as a main post office.

Local shops include lots of high class shoe and clothes stores, there are numerous galleries, selling both paintings and sculpture, souvenir and bookshops. There is also a cinema within the old city.

The beach offers various activities, including water skiing and canoeing. Details are available in the apartment, or ask at the beach!

There's a list of recommendations in the apartment of places to go. But don't miss:

Sveti Jakov beach (in the distance on the coast back towards the airport). Ask a cab to take you (or walk - it's about 20mins). It's really nice and there's a great bar (which is open in high season); there are LOTS of steps down to it though and the beach shelves sharply into the sea, so it’s not great for little kids).

Island of Lokrum (opposite the city beach) It's nice to walk around (up to the fort – good views back to Dubrovnik) and good for sunbathing on rocks. There's also a mini oasis, a restaurant that does sandwiches, spag bol etc in the grounds of a ruined monastery, a café for ice creams, the odd peacock, wild tortoise and a very laid back botanical gardens). Boats leave from old harbour, it takes about 15 mins and makes a good day or half day out.

The walk round the city walls. About 2.5 hours - do it at start or end of day when it’s not boiling. Loads of ice cream and drink stops on the way around.

Cavtat - lovely fishing village nearer to airport. Boat from old harbour takes about 1 hour to get there. Circular walk around headland is lovely. Facing the harbour water, turn right and keep sea on your left, land on your right. Halfway round is a good and reasonable restaurant. Follow the headland all the way round. When you get to a carpark, you're back behind the main drag - keep going, you'll get there. You can get a boat back. Or, take the number 10 bus to or fro.

Lopud island – beach of Sunj, with café at far end. Lots of details on this in apartment. It’s fabulous. Best way to get there is from the Gruz modern harbour on a Jadrolina boat (take the number 1 bus from the Pile gate).

We also like: Lapad beach (nice for younger kids, take no 4 bus from Pile gate; Copacabana beach (it’s not as good as the Brazilian one but has a good café and a great view of the massive bridge at Gruz), take the no 6 bus from the Pile gate and ask the driver for help – you cut through a hotel type complex to reach it.

City beach – you can’t miss it. Loos, café, good bakery nearby, one half is paying with sunbeds, the other side is free.

Any other trips you want to take, airport pick ups (and return – recommended to go by cab because buses can be unreliable), we have a driver called Dusko. Dusko's number is 00 385 98 85 72 00 if you want to book him (or his friends) in advance. Or better still, email him with flight details etc: dusko.tomovic1@du.t-com.hr. He’s a very nice guy and will give you lots of info about Dubrovnik on the way into town.

We ask for a 25% deposit, non-refundable if you cancel your booking within 90 days of the start of your stay. We ask for full payment 2 weeks before the start of your stay. We will also hold an added £100 security deposit, refundable after the end of your stay, when our housekeeper has checked the inventory.

Changeover Day:
Departure time, 10am. Arrival 4pm. On arrival, you will need to make arrangements with our apartment manager to hand over the keys and check the inventory at the end of your stay.
