The Tavira Garden holiday apartment rental complex is widely regarded as the best of its kind in the Eastern Algarve. The buildings are in the Moorish style and the lush, mature gardens are semi-tropical. There are two pool areas (each with adjacent kids pool, loungers, umbrellas, etc), two kids play areas, tennis, boules court, fitness room (with sauna, machines, massage, Yoga), bar/bistro, communal BBQ, free parking, etc. WiFi Internet is broadcast free of charge at Reception and you can also have a WiFi 'HotSpot' in the apartment as an optional extra (ADSL 12Mbps, unlimited download. GB£20 for the first week, thereafter GB£1,50 per day). Satellite TV in each apartment includes channels in English, French, German and Spanish. The flat-screen TV's have HDMI connections and DVD players are provided. An informal paperback library (mainly English) is available.

Each of our apartments is air-conditioned and has two bedrooms (one with double bed, one with twin beds). Dishwasher, washing machine and drying frame are provided (you can also use a dryer in the on-site launderette and 19B additionally has a tumble dryer). Bed-linen and towels are provided and changed in mid-stay for longer stays when the apartment is also cleaned. Sleeping capacity is 4 to 6 guests. Cot, camp-bed and/or sofa-bed also available for guests in excess of four. A Welcome Pack is provided on arrival.

Apartment 15A is approx 110sqm (1200sqft). It is fully air-conditioned and has two bedrooms and two bathrooms (the master bedroom is en suite). Entrance is directly from the pedestrianised garden area but the apartment is a duplex. At entrance level you have lobby, kitchen and dining room; steps lead down to the large lounge and up to the bedrooms. 15A has separate dining room and living and a comprehensively equipped kitchen. Lounge and each bedroom are individually air-conditioned. A furnished balcony off the living room has a sea view and gets the morning sun, ideal for breakfast or for relaxing in the shade in the hot afternoons.

Apartment 15E is approx 90sqm (1000sqft). It is fully air-conditioned and has two bedrooms and two bathrooms. Entrance is directly from the pedestrianised garden area but the apartment is a duplex. At entrance level you have kitchen and dining nook; steps lead down to the large lounge and up to the bedrooms. Lounge and each bedroom are individually air-conditioned. A furnished balcony off the living room has a sea view and gets the morning sun, ideal for breakfast or for relaxing in the shade in the hot afternoons.

Apartment 16A is approx 90sqm (1100sqft). It is fully air-conditioned and has two bedrooms and one bathroom (located between the two bedrooms). The apartment is on the second floor and is an open-plan layout on a single level. You have separate kitchen and dining room, separate by a breakfast bar. There is a large furnished breakfast balcony accessed from both master bedroom and lounge; there is also a furnished roof terrace half a flight up from the apartment – the terrace has loungers, umbrella, table, chairs, gas BBQ, panoramic views to the sea and to the Algarve hills. The apartment is comprehensively equipped for four to six guests. Living area and each bedroom are individually air-conditioned.

Apartment 19B is approx 90sqm (1000sqft). It is a 2-bed 2-bath ground floor apartment on a single level with air-conditioned open-plan living/dining area and a most attractive kitchen. Entrance is from the pedestrianised garden area and the apartment also has a part-shaded veranda with gated access to the small pool – this veranda is furnished (loungers, tables, chairs, etc) and is equipped with a gas BBQ. The double bedroom is air-conditioned and the twin bedroom has a ceiling fan.

The bistro offers an excellent selection of reasonable priced meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner) and snacks throughout the day. Drinks and snacks are also served in the main pool area and the bistro hosts regular barbecue dinners with live entertainment.

The old town is 10 to 15 minute walk (it’s downhill) or a taxi costs €4,00 (2015). There is a good supermarket at 300m and a large shopping mall (major supermarket, shops, boutiques, cinemas, food court, etc) at 800m. The old town itself is one of the best preserved in the Algarve and many of its cobbled streets are pedestrianised. Street cafes and inexpensive restaurants abound and fish is a specialty. The Town Council organises a busy program of entertainments through the summer – street theatre, folk music and dancing, concerts, fairs, exhibitions, balloon races, air displays, film and culinary festivals, etc.

In 2013, UNESCO recognised Tavira as a Cultural Centre for the Mediterranean Diet which is described by UNESCO as emphasising the values of hospitality, neighbourliness, intercultural dialogue and creativity, and a way of life guided by respect for diversity. The Algarve now joins Spain, Cyprus, Italy, Croatia, Greece and Morocco in this recognition.

The nearby Tavira Island has 12km of the finest white beaches of the Algarve with bars, cafes, restaurants, massage, etc and loungers, umbrellas for hire – move a few hundred yards and have an entire stretch of beach to yourself. The Algarve waters are at their warmest here away from the cold Atlantic currents and winds which are a feature of some of the Western Algarve.

The Spanish border is 25km away and the old walled towns along the Guadiana River (which marks the border) are a big attraction – you can take a cruise up-river with a stop for lunch on the way. Seville, with its Moorish and Crusader grandeur (and its extravagant shopping!) is 150km – 90 minutes by car or there’s an express bus. A commuter train connects Tavira with most of the coastal towns of the Algarve from the Spanish border to Lagos in the west. Local buses run to the towns and villages of the Algarve hinterland.

Tavira is surrounded by the Ria Formosa Nature Park. You can enjoy bird watching, butterfly chasing, horse riding, cycling (or just plain wander). Bicycles, boats, canoes and horses are available for hire. The water slides and golf courses of the Western Algarve are about an hour’s drive away and there are half a dozen excellent golf courses within half an hour’s drive – three within a 10km radius of Tavira.

While most of our guests come for a week or two in the summer, we also rent in winter on a monthly basis. For winter rentals, towels and linen are supplied (but no cleaning or laundry) and utilities are billed monthly based on metered usage but without mark-up on the service provider's standard charges. An in-apartment WiFi 'HotSpot' is provided -- this has unlimited download and is fast enough to allow watching TV on line.

15E is a 2-bed 2-bath, fully tiled, fully air-conditioned 1000sqft duplex apartment. Front door opens directly off the gardens. Kitchen, Dining are at entrance level, steps lead down to lounge, up to bedrooms. Bathroom beside each bedroom. Lounge, dining kitchen equipped for 6 guests. Double sofa-bed in living room; cot, high chair free of charge if requested when booking. The kitchen is comprehensively equipped (incl dishwasher and washing machine). Towels, linen changed and apartment cleaned on longer stays. Sat TV (channels include English and D/Ös/CH/Fr/Es/NL), DVD, radio, paperback library, DVD's, etc. A large balcony opens off the lounge. Born in Ireland, I studied electrical engineering and worked for a variety of international companies. I bought a vacation apartment in Tavira Garden and today I have four apartments there. I retired in 2003 and today I spend the winter in Tavira and the summer in Dublin. In between i usually spend a few weeks in Uganda as a volunteer.

Unlike many Algarve towns, Tavira remains alive in the winter. Tavira Garden is beautifully laid out in mature gardens and is very conveniently located. Even in high summer, the facilities are never overcrowded.

Special interest holidays:

The Ria Formosa Nature Park surrounds Tavira and is listed as one of the "Seven Natural Wonders of Portugal". You can go horse riding, bird watching, cycling, wandering, butterfly collecting, etc. Ilha da Tavira has 12km of some of the finest white sands of the Algarve (and also secluded nudist beach). The Guadiana River valley with its ancient walled towns (and also Roman, Phoenician, Bronze Age and Iron Age remains) is within half an hour's drive. You can drive through the valley or enjoy the sights from one of several cruise boats operating from Vila Real do Santo Antonio and Ayamonte (they stop for lunch on the way upriver). As well as the Roman bridge, Tavira has a wealth of well preserved archaeological sites from Roman, Moorish and Crusader times.

Last but not least, Tavira is now recognised as a “European Centre of Culture” for the Mediterranean Cuisine”.

Coast/Beach:

The best beaches in the area are those of Ilha da Tavira, a sandbar which stretches along the coast off Tavira and which is reached by various ferries or by means of a ‘toy’ train. The island has some 8miles (12km) of white strands (even a remote nudist beach). Ferry or train take 5 to 10 minutes. Bars, restaurants, lounger/umbrella-hire are available on the beaches but you can also walk a few hundred yards and stake out your own uncluttered area.

Travel:

Nearest airport is Faro (35 mins, taxi €50 for 4/5 PAX 2015). Seville airport (2 hours) can sometimes be a competitive alternative. Lisbon (also fast, inexpensive train connection) or Jerez are 3-4 hours drive. Car rental is optional, many guests opt to do without (or perhaps to rent for a few days to explore the surrounding countryside, go shopping in Seville, etc - you can drop off at Faro airport and save a taxi fare). Or contact us for competitive car rental at airport or in Tavira.

Distances:

Tavira Garden is 10 mins from the motorway. Seville is a 90 mins drive, Lisbon 3 hours, Lagos (the western tip of the Algarve ~2 hours), Gibraltar ~2 hours. The Guadiana valley is 30 mins away; the old, walled towns of the Guadiana Valley 30-60 min. A commuter train runs the entire Algarve coast, connects in Faro with the high speed service to Lisbon. Express buses connect with Lisbon, Seville, etc; good local bus services to the hinterland. Train and bus are inexpensive by UK standards.

Tavira, a live fishing port, offers fish as a specialty in its many inexpensive restaurants. June to September, the local Camara (Town Council) organises street theatre, folk music and dance sessions, exhibitions, fairs, markets, a film festival, etc. The town abounds in architectural relics of its Roman, Moorish and Crusader history. There are many temptations for the shopaholics – this is a place to be avoided, the more so as express buses offer the opportunity to visit the upmarket shopping areas of Seville while Tavira boasts a large new shopping mall with boutiques, food court, cinemas, etc. Seriously though, Tavira has managed largely to avoid the brash disco bars and lager louts which plague many of the resorts of the Western Algarve. This makes it ideal for family holidays but your teenagers can still let their hair down – there are at least two or three good dance clubs in town!

The Guadiana River marks the border between Spain and Portugal. Centuries of conflict between the two have left a series of walled towns along the river banks. The Guadiana Valley is approx 20 miles (30km) from Tavira but probably the best way to explore the walled towns is to take a leisurely river cruise from Villa Real do Sto Antonio (they stop for lunch en route upriver).

The Ria Formosa Nature park surrounds Tavira. Rich in flora, fauna, lepidoptera, it is ideal for bird-watching, rambling, cycling, horse-riding, etc.

The town council (Camara) provides free WiFi in Tavira’s main square and in some other areas.

ATM's abound in Tavira; drawing cash on British or Irish cards is no problem. Throughout the season, the Camara organises street theatre, folk music, dancing, fairs, exhibitions, a film festival, air displays, ballooning -- Tavira rocks!
