Overview

About the property

Anyone for Tennis? We're one of the few villas on the Cote d'Azur with its own private court.

Storyvilla is a Provençal Stone villa close to the medieval village of Vence, Cote d'Azur. It is set in a glorious haven in a private location a five minutes drive from the Roman village and 12 minutes to the famous Saint Paul de Vence. It's also 12 minutes to the new POLYGONE RIVIERA - the first 'lifestyle' shopping mall in France which also boasts 10 cinemas and numerous restaurants. (a great hit with teenagers and shoppers alike!)

The Villa: It has a large reception room with a grand piano which has a very famous pedigree. Separate Dining room. Kitchen. Study with internet/wifi. The Villa has 4 bedrooms (sleeps 8) plus 3 bathrooms/shower-rooms & 2 separate wc's in main house.

There is Air-conditioning on 1st floor only.

There's an outdoor bbq area and separate bar area. A new terrace has just been constructed where you can dine alfresco and enjoy outstanding views of the coast and Cap d'Antibes. It is spectacular both day and night.

There's a private Tennis court, a Boules court, Table football and an outdoor table-tennis table.

You can kick a football or play rugby and connect with your children through sport as there's a field with a goal post big enough to do either. The lower garden has swings for young children to play on. There's a trampoline to keep people of all ages happy. A hammock is there for chilling n reading or just shooting the breeze!

Storyvilla has recreational facilities for every age group.

There's a welcome pack for guests which includes, baguettes, cheese, milk, tea, coffee, butter and cereal.

(Please note the villa does not include the cottage as shown in the video, it's possible to rent this separately however)

About Fiona Butterfield

We're based between Vence and London. We're involved in motorsport. We have three children, the youngest is 13. Storyvilla is a paradise for children, there's so much to explore and lots to keep them occupied.

Fiona Butterfield purchased this villa in 2005

Why Fiona Butterfield chose Nice Area

We fell in love with Storyvilla the first time we saw it. It was owned by a famous American jazz impresario called George Wein who used it as his European base for forty years.

We knew we were buying a piece of history when we acquired this wonderful provençal home. George, who is still an active octogenarian, founded the Newport Jazz festival, the New Orleans Jazz festival and the Nice Jazz festival.

Every name in Jazz came to Storyvilla. Ella Fitzgerald, Oscar Peterson, Dave Brubeck, Louis Armstrong to name just a few.

We inherited the grand piano that was once played by these greats in Newport in the 1960's.

For us it's a privilege to be 'custodians' of Storyvilla and to count George Wein as a personal friend. He comes back every year to visit Storyvilla.

He recently received a lifetime achievement award at the Grammys, remarkable for the 90 year young Jazz impresario who shaped the lives of some many great jazz artists. He was decorated with France's Légion d'honneur and appointed a Commandeur de L'Ordre des Arts et Lettres.

What makes this villa unique

You can be in Storyvilla in the peak of summer and be blissfully unaware of the throng of tourists that descend on the Cote d'Azur in July and August.

It is rural and peaceful and perfect for unwinding and reconnecting with family and friends. You can look out to the Mediterranean sea towards Cap d'Antibes and feel energised by the ever-changing view. No wonder so many world renowned artists loved the area, Matisse was up the road, Chagall (who is buried in St Paul de Vence) Dufy and Picasso all loved this part of France.

Swim, play tennis, football, games, music, piano, guitar, watch movies, have a barbecue - it's a world away from stress and deadlines and technology (though we have wifi!) that sometimes takes over our lives.

You can be in the wonderful medieval former Roman town of Vence in minutes with its bustling Friday markets and numerous restaurants. St Paul de Vence is just 12 minutes away. Tourette sur Loup is another gem that's close by, it's similar to St Paul but without the tourist coaches. It boasts a Michelin restaurant and plenty of family restaurants.

Storyvilla and its Jazz provenance featured in the Wall Street Journal, Departures Magazine (American express magazine) and The Sunday Times.

If you like old world charm you'll love Storyvilla....

Guestbook comments from the owner

We have had so many positive reviews it would be impossible to list them all here. (See Trip Advisor for just a few reviews). Everyone agrees that a villa of this calibre offered so much recreation for all ages which is exactly what they were looking for in their summer holiday!

You can chill on a hammock reading a book, or swim in the salt-water swimming pool, play tennis or kick a football around in the upper field (there's a couple of goal posts), play table-tennis, boules or table-football, or just sunbathe and take in the magnificent view of the Mediterranean sea. Young children can play on the swings or slide. There is something for everyone - you could never be bored at Storyvilla!

Amazing Storyvilla

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed at the beautiful Storyvilla many times. If you love authentic Provenćal style you will love it here. There's an old world 'Marcel Pagnol' feel to it and it's set in 2 acres which is lovely. Think of a French Gatsby and the Jazz age and is pretty much untouched from when the previous owner and world renowned Jazz impresario George Wein lived here.

My husband plays the piano and the sound from their grand piano is to behold.

My teenage kids loved being independent living in the cottage away from Mum & Dad.

We actually got fit on our holidays here. The private tennis court is a real bonus and you earn your mediterranean supper that's for sure.

I loved the salt water pool because I have a bit of asthma and chlorinated water affect that greatly.

If I had any criticism it's that the bathrooms are a little old fashioned (although the original pink Biot tiles are adorable) but the water pressure is great and that's what matters.

Storyvilla is a time warp. As a family you can come together because everything is contained there. Want to kick a football or rugby with the children? there's a field for that and a goal post.

Vence, Tourette sur Loup and the more touristy St Paul de Vence are a short drive away and lovely to meander around. The beach is 20 minutes drive but we preferred the privacy of our own pool.

There's a new lifestyle Shopping Mall in Cages which is 15 minutes driver. Teens and shoppers would probably love it but you can do that anytime right? Why waste a precious holiday shopping! However the antique market in Nice on a Monday, that's a different matter.

Really, you need two weeks minimum here if you really want to get the best out of Storyvilla. But a week will still tick all the boxes. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do!

Lovely villa and gardens, Kids paradise

  • 5 of 5

We had the pleasure of staying in Storyvilla last year and we were two family from Sweden sharing. We had a great time and we will return again.

We liked the villa because it had so much to offer. Swimming, Tennis, Boules, Football etc.

We watch movies some evenings (there is an Apple TV box but no Netflix) or we played games.

Most nights we ate in the wonderful nearby town of Vence.

There are nice walk up to the nearby Bous (like a mountian) to a river.

The views are just breathtaking. Day and night. Our album is filled with the most amazing pictures. We want to come back soon and feel that again.

Enjoy a luxerious life in wonderful surroundings

  • 5 of 5

Having enjoyed the pleasures of Storyvilla during five visits over six years, we have learned to love the place and the way of life in Provence. Storyvilla is magnificently located just outside Vence, with a grand view of Nice, Cannes and the Mediterranean sea. The house is surrounded by a beautiful and well kept terraced garden with tropical fruits, tennis court nearby and even a fish pond. During the day we preferred sunbathing by the pool, whilst during night time the patio was ideal for barbequing and relaxation. Storyvilla is a large house, with spacious bed rooms with baths conveniently located next door. The kitchen is large, and the living room nicely laid out (although we prefer to sit outside enjoying the magical summer nights). The house offers a special rustic atmosphere of the past with its classic French architecture. We liked Storyvilla for not being a new and modern property, but rather a charming small Provence style "mansion". The owner had prepared a folder suggesting things to see and experience, and the dialogue has been forthcoming and helpful in every aspect. There's a lot of things to do, and short distances to shopping, fine dining, walks and even beach life. And of course, great golf courses are everywhere. If you're considering to enjoy the luxerious life in Provence, Storyvilla offers a natural and comfortable starting point.
