Spacious Villa With Panoramic Pool - Marreco House

Updated: 12-Jul-2016
Country House in wine estate Quinta de Sant'Ana, near Ericeira, Lisbon Coast - Exclusive Location in the Countryside With Spectacular Views over wooded hills and vineyards

The two houses are situated at opposite ends of the farm; Marreco House is set on its own at the end of a drive, so it is very private. It has four bedrooms, but it is so spacious it can easily sleep 12. There is a veranda outside the two upstairs bedrooms and sitting room, where you can eat breakfast, or enjoy your evening drink taking in the view across the valley and vineyards. Alternatively you can eat on the patio below next to the barbeque and lawn. From there go through the gate and down the steps and you will arrive at the infinity pool, where you can lounge or have some fun! The Lemon Garden is a beautiful conversion from the old stables. Situated inside the heart of the property, between the wine cellar and a large plane tree, it has its own private cobbled garden with many Lemon trees, easily picked for your gin and tonics! All on one level, with access to the garden from most of the rooms, it is ideal for children or guests who do not like stairs. In the garden outside the kitchen and sitting room you can sit and eat under a pergola. There is shaded exclusive parking on the other side of the house. The shared pool is a short 200m walk from the house, from where you can enjoy the view of the vineyards and have a jump on the trampoline!

Details for holiday villa Marreco House, 4 Bedrooms, Sleeps 12, 3 Bathrooms, 1 Separate WC

The house, swimming pool and gardens have been built and decorated with handmade terra cotta floor tiles and great love for detail. The building is whitewashed in soft ochre that gives it an attractive traditional feel. Stone steps from the fenced in lawn behind the house lead down to the large swimming pool (5m x 10m). Swimmers have a breathtaking view and complete privacy. The large, open fireplace in the sitting room is made from one piece of pink marble. Originally planned to be an artist's studio, the sitting room has a fantastic panoramic view of the valley. From the bedrooms, French windows lead on to the Arab-style tiled terrace perfect for breakfast or candle lit dinners to the sound of crickets. The two upstairs bedrooms both have French windows leading onto the same terrace. Bathrooms are bright and colourful. The kitchen has antique azulejo details and is equipped with all guests need to make cooking part of the Portuguese experience.

About the Owner

We have been living in Portugal for nearly 2 decades, raising our seven boys and living our dream of making our own wine a reality. Ann grew up on the farm, where, the Fürstenberg family lived until the revolution. James, from a farming background in Dorset, spends most of his time in the vineyards and wine cellars while Ann, a trained graphic designer, dedicates herself to running the holiday cottages and organizing events, including occasional dinners, which guests can join.

Dear James (and Ann),

Linda, UK, June 2011: "Just a note to say thank you very much for helping to make our stay a memorable one: welcoming host, a lovely house, fine wine, great celebration meal complete with cake, a beautiful area to explore - though with 4 little ones just the pool and local area were more than enough. Erik aged 4 was most upset at leaving your house and pool!

A wonderful secluded position with views across the hills and valleys nearby. You can sit on the balcony or swim in the pool to enjoy them. The house is spacious - perfect for a big family or for groups of friends - well equipped, and ideally situated for exploring the local area, with the sea very easy to get to. All the people in the shops and villages you visit could not be more friendly.

From the Owner

Ann's German parents bought the property in the late 1960's with the idea of bringing up their children in the tranquility and beauty of this place. The vicinity to Lisbon and the coast was a main attraction to them then, as it is still to us, but also the pituresque village and the charming personalities of the local Portuguese people. The challenge of producing top quality wine adds to the attraction.

Activity and Interests

Special interest holidays:

Wine & Food is an important feature in this location; the house belongs to the wine estate Quinta de Sant'Ana. The owner gives vineyard tours and tastings in the winery for interested guests. During harvest time guests may wish to participate in grape picking and even grape treading in the ancient stone fermentation tanks! Picking seasons vary from end of August till mid October. For larger groups and depending on the Chef's availability Gourmet Wine-Dinners on request.

Ericeira is 20 minutes drive. Sandy beaches with excellent surf (World Surf Reserve). Plenty of fish and sea food restaurants. Iberian Wolf Sanctuary nearby. The Quinta borders with the Tapada de Mafra, a huge wild life park that used to be the Kings' hunting grounds.

30 minutes drive from Lisbon airport. Public transport is poor in the area, so car hire is recommended, if you want to make the most of the area.

The village of Gradil is 2 minute drive from the house and 15 minutes by foot through the estates' vineyards.

Further Details:

Gradil has 1 restaurant, informal and family style cooking, also for 'take aways' if guests do not want to cook. Two cafés, a bar, village store, newspaper shop, hairdresser, post office and cash dispenser. It is a traditional rural village with cobbled roads and a historical church.

  • Notes on accommodation: Quinta de Sant’Ana is perfect for a peaceful rural family holiday, while still being just a short drive from many of Portugal’s great tourist attractions and the capital city of Lisbon, or Ericeira Coast, World Surfing Reserve. James will treat interested guests to a visit to vineyards followed by a wine tasting in the ancient ‘adega’.
