Farmhouse in a Hamlet near Saintes, Charente-Maritime, France

This delightful detached Charentaise farmhouse has its own secluded swimming pool and beautiful unobstructed southerly views across a valley planted with vines. It is in a pretty little hamlet only 3km from St Hilaire de Villefranche and makes a beautiful location for a complete holiday. Pass under the covered gateway into a huge gravelled courtyard enclosed by the property's barns; park in the massive hanger and discover the orchard, kitchen garden, lawns and swimming pool. The lovely cities of Saintes and St Jean-d'Angely with their markets and restaurants make great places to start exploring and the sandy coast offers everything from little oyster ports with excellent restaurants, an internationally famous zoo at La Palmyre or surfing on the Cote Sauvage. Satellite TV, DVD and wireless broadband are provided and English property managers ensure that everything is maintained to a high standard.

About Linda and Alan Benn

We are Linda and Alan, a newly retired couple who have owned the house since 2006. Linda was a school teacher and Alan was in electronics, although nowadays our jobs seem to be mostly DIY and gardening.

We are confirmed francophiles and have had lots of holidays here, from early days camping with the kids to the longer stays retirement now allows us.

Why Linda and Alan Benn chose Charente-Maritime

We were drawn to the Charente Maritime by its excellent weather - it is the second warmest and driest region of France after Provence. Happily it doesn't have the problems of Provence, there is very little crime and the roads are quiet.

We fell in love with this house mainly for its location in a pretty hamlet and giving fabulous views and open southerly aspect. It is a classic Charentaise farmhouse - stone built, terracotta tiled roofs, sloping to the back. The land around used to belong to the house, in fact the wife of the couple we bought from grew up there and her Dad owned the farm. What remains is a beautiful courtyard surrounded by stone barns.

What makes this farmhouse unique

We have fitted and furnished the house in a modern but relaxed manner for a comfortable and stress free stay. Two kitchens and modern appliances make it as comfortable as your own home.

Apart from some shopping you could literally spend your whole holiday at the house, lounging round the pool, BBQ-ing and relaxing. It would be a shame not to explore though, there are excellent restaurants in nearby towns, beaches are 45 minutes easy drive and it is rewarding to meander by car, bicycle or on foot as the region is very beautiful.

Notes on accommodation: The property has a wireless broadband connection. The ground floor twin bedroom, shower room, w/c and back kitchen can be used as separate accommodation for grand parents or teenagers. Parents - the road through the village is not busy and the gates into the courtyard can be locked, however the gardens are not fenced at the rear, which opens to fields. The swimming pool is enclosed by approved fencing and self-closing gates to ensure that young children cannot gain access without you. Outside: The gardens have views across a valley to vines and are bounded on the south by open farmland which is planted to wheat or sunflowers on alternate years. There is an area planted with a variety of trees, a large courtyard surrounded by barns and a shade tree to take refuge when it is hot. The heated swimming pool has plenty of space for loungers and faces due south for uninterrupted sun-bathing and privacy. It is a top quality in ground pool with heating, automatic chlorination, and an insulating roll on cover to preserve heat and cleanliness. The property managers visit every Saturday (or by arrangement) to maintain the pool and perhaps cut the grass or other gardening. Utility Room: A large light back kitchen has a washing machine, tumble dryer, sink, an extra fridge for drinks, a second microwave oven and even a bread maker.

Lovely property in great setting with pool

We had a splendid couple of weeks at this fantastic property. Situated at the edge of a small hamlet with lovely open views over vineyards and sunflower fields the setting for the house and pool could not be better.

The house was well equipped and had everything you need with the addition of large comfy beds.

The pool was smaller than expected but perfect for cooling off and games.

The location was great with St Jean D'angely, Saintes and Cognac all within 15-30mins.

We loved getting lost walking the white lanes that cross cross the area keeping an eye out for the hares, deer and birds of prey that we surprised. Great fun to be had canoeing at Cognac.

Lovely house, great location for a relaxing break

We spent a wonderful 2 weeks at this lovely property. The property is ideally situated, with superb open views from the garden and the pool. The pool itself, whilst not the biggest, is lovely for a refreshing dip. The house has everything you could want from large comfy beds to a well equipped kitchen. Great wifi suited the kids. Take some time to get lost in the myriad of 'white lanes' which criss-cross the area. Shopping close in St Jean and bigger selection at both Saintes and Cognac. Recommend the canoeing at Cognac for a fun filled few hours. Overall- simply lovely!
