Glorious Greek holiday
Karen and Sue
About the Owner
I have worked in tourism, in Greece since 1989 when I led and organized walking holidays in the white mountains of Crete.
I then worked as a "handy person" for a villa specialist and they asked me to work for them in Kefalonia as they needed someone who spoke Greek to help them to find more properties for their portfolio.
Since then I have worked for blue chip travel companies as a representative, then island manager.
During my involvement in working for these villa specialists I got an insight into the important things people require from their holiday accommodation.
Amigdalospito (Almond House) ticked all the boxes! We had been looking for the "right' place for a few years. The restoration was a vertical learning curve and was more hands on than you would ever imagine!
We renovated a small cottage adjacent to the house which we live in during the summer months. So we are close on hand for any advise or tour suggestions for our guests during their stay!
During the winter months I now pursue my love of painting which was put on hold for years whilst restoring the house. Also I visit the mainland to the little known ski areas of Kalavryta and Vytina.

16/10/13 Sue & Richard. We've had such a lovely time in this beautiful place-it was perfect for the wedding party and as a place for Laura to be married from, it was a home from home! Thank you so much, Sue and Karen, for your hospitality- we and all the family have been made to feel very welcome and it has been just brilliant.
02/08/14 Adrian,Cathy and family. We've had a fantastic week in your lovely house in a perfect setting. It's all gone by far too fast though. Thanks for all your help and suggestions- we loved the beaches & the restaurants. Say "Hi" and thanks to Jamie for a brilliant day on the water too!
19/08/14 Vickie, David and party. Thank you Sue and Karen for looking after us so well. We have all had a fantastic time. The house and grounds are beautiful and altogether its been one of my favourite holidays. It's been lovely to meet you both and thanks for everything.
26/08/14 Gardner & Nowicki families. A fabulous place for our last family holiday before teenagers flee the nest. Love the house, the gardens, the pool and the postcard messaging system. Our best beaches were Dafnoudi and Kamilia- both with the walk down. Karen & Sue Thank you!

Glorious Greek holiday
This is a an idyllic holiday location. The house is spacious and comfortable, and was so well equipped it felt like staying in a family home. The setting is glorious, a large pool and lots of outdoor space with views across this beautiful island. Karen and Sue are exceptional hosts: they assisted us with every aspect of our holiday: from booking flights, car hire, great tips regarding lovely beaches and restaurants, to organising a brilliant boat trip which was a family highlight. They were discreet, but ready to hand with any queries we had. The house was regularly cleaned and serviced, which allowed us to relax completely. Cephalonia has so many aspects which make it an ideal destination, and our experience was hugely enhanced by by the wonderful ambiance created at Amigdalospito by Karen and Sue. Many many thanks for an outstanding holiday.
Fabulous Holiday House
8 of us (4 adults,4 teenage kids) stayed for 2 weeks. Fabulous holiday. Property exactly as advertised. Scrupulously clean, very well kitted out and maintained. Wonderful views and setting, very comfortable accommodation, lovely pool. Karen & Sue (the owners) were so helpful and friendly - discreetly on hand for any holiday advice - Karen organised a marine-biology day boat trip which our 16 year old daughter described as the best day of her life! They also helped us hire cars for when we arrived - a necessity for getting round the windy roads of Kefalonia. The local village restaurants are very good - and our favourite beach was Agia Jerousalem. The house is about 10 minutes drive from the port Fiskardo - very smart if a little pricey - great for cafes, wandering around in the evening. I would completely recommend this holiday house. We had a blissful 2 weeks and shall be going back!
The entry on Owner's Direct does not do this property justice. Amigdalospito is a spacious and well equipped home, welcoming with its generous facilities. The living area is large and accommodating, and the kitchen is exceptionally well provided with everything that you could want. It is clear that our hosts, Karen and Sue, have brought real passion to this place, which is reflected in the thoughtful arrangements, from the honesty bar to the sun hats. The outside space is ideally arranged, with plenty of seating in different places for a quiet sit down with a glass of wine. Highly recommended.
Sunrise over Ithaca
We booked this beautiful property for 3 generations of our family who were in Kefalonia for the marriage of one of our 4 daughters to a Kefalonian on 5 October, and it was perfect! We particularly wanted a property that we could make into a home for our daughter to be married from, and one where we could entertain all the family and friends who had come to join the celebrations. We had planned a party in the lovely outside space at Amigdalospito the day after the wedding, but it poured with rain and so we were lucky that 60 odd people could fit into the large living area for a great party!
We were welcomed into their home with open arms by Sue and Karen for whom nothing was too much trouble, including custody of the wedding dress prior to the day! The whole experience was everything we hoped it would be. We are a family of cooks and the kitchen was far better equipped than any other holiday home we have ever stayed in.
We liked eating at Makis in the village; the second restaurant on the left in Antipati on the way to Fiscardo; swimming, Margaritas and watching the sunset at Alaties; but, of course, our favourite place is Odysseus Taverna at Agia Jerusalim.
We have been to Kefalonia several times and still find new places to explore. We would have no hesitation in recommending Amigdalospito as a great place to stay and hope to stay again soon.
An absolutely wonderful property that housed our family party in total luxury. The house and associated cottage were extremely well appointed, the swimming pool magnificent and above all the owners, Sue and Karen, were welcoming and helpful beyond the call of duty.
From the Owner
“We found and bought the 150 year old house and outbuildings, in 1998. It took six years to lovingly restore and transform it into a comfortable home and perfect holiday accommodation. Karen and I have worked together for many years in Greece and wanted to live in an authentic Greek village, not a tourist place which closes down in winter. There are beautiful rural views with a great sense of space as it is on a hill at the edge of the village. Despite the dilapidated state it was in when we first went to see it, it had a lovely feel. It is only a few minutes walk to two shops, a cafe bar and a couple of tavernas which stay open all year. The property is situated on a hill above the rest of the village and has a lovely cool breeze in the grounds even during high summer. Our favourite beaches and seaside resorts are all within a short drive and many beaches are within a 10 minute drive from the house. All of this mixed with the culture and climate I couldn't imagine living anywhere else.”
Activity and Interests
Special interest holidays:
We are keen walkers and used to do our own walking weeks during the season. If you would like to bring a group of your own to walk or study a particular subject, please contact us as we may be able to help facilitate your needs. The grounds and gardens are an ideal place for reading, painting, drawing, sketching and meditating. Or simply doing nothing!
Beaches within 10 minutes drive are Agia Jerousalim, Alaties, Assos, Dafnoudi, Foki (south of Fiscardo), Emblissi (NE of Fiscardo). 20 minutes drive is the famous Myrtos beach which is especially stunning when viewed from the northern cliffs above. Our nearest favourite local beaches at Agia Jerousalim (fantastic for snorkelling and a great taverna) and Assos village with safe beach for families, waterside tavernas and bars with sun loungers and umbrellas for rent.
The airport is known as Kefalinia airport (EFL). It is just over an hours drive from Amigdalospito. The port of Sami is (30mins drive) and has ferries to Ithaca, Patras and Astakos. Fiscardo is a 10 minute drive and also has ferry links with Lefkas and Ithaca. Car hire is recommended but not essential. There is some lovely walking locally and taxis are relatively inexpensive, buses are infrequent throughout the island.
Fiscardo is 8 kms, Assos 10kms, Agia Efimia is 21 kms, Sami 30 kms with the famous Drogarati Cave and Melisani Lake nearby. Argostol the capital, 46 kms with waterfont market, shops, tavernas and bars. The Archeological Museum and Korgialenio Historical and Folklore Museum are well worth a visit.
Fiscardo, a one time quiet fishing village, is now a popular and colourful port. Lined with shops, cafes and tavernas, an ideal spot to watch the yachts come in as well as a visit to the various shops and supermarkets. There is as a bank, various cash points, a new post office and scooter/car/boat hire.
Just outside Fiscardo is a track down to Kaminia beach. It is possible to walk along a path to Emblissi beach from here.
Antipata, the village just before Fiscardo has cafe 'Picnic' which serves great snacks throughout the day and picnic hampers on request. Just next door is a small mini-market. Opposite is To Petrino Taverna serving traditional meals all day. There is also a small tourist shop selling beach items and clothing, jewellery etc. Dafnoudi beach is reached by road from the junction. The nearest village on the main road to Fiscardo is Manganos, it has a taverna, mini market and vegetable shop which also sells local wine and fresh bread. Assos has a small mini market, shop and vegetable market. There is a walk up to the castle for stunning views. Agia Efimia has a few supermarkets, bank, cashpoints and post office. Agia Efimia and Fiscardo both have small boat hire. There are diving schools in Fiscardo and Agia Efimia. Our local beach of Agia Jerousalim has a shady taverna with great home cooked food. The beach has sun loungers and umbrellas for hire by the day. Alaties 'The Salts', (where sea salt is collected in the rock pools) sitting at Aqua (A place for dreamers) is a great place to watch the sun go down and enjoy a cocktail and mezes with great music. Mesovounia is the village our house looks over and is about a fifteen minute walk and has a traditional Coffee shop "Sinantisis" which serves home made traditional sweets, local wine, beer and appetizers. This has turned into a favourite walk by many of our guests! Vasilikades or Enosis as it is known locally on the main road is a 3 minute walk from the house and has 2 tavernas, the traditional long established 'O Makis' and Veggera with beautiful sea and sunset views from the terrace, both with great Greek home cooking at its best! Also there is a cafe/coffee shop, supermarket and corner shop for all your holiday needs.

From the Owner
“The place had ' A wonderful feeling ' even as a ruin so we could not resist the challenge of a complete renovation. In a rural location without being remote, suited us as we were thinking of our later years! The house is one of very few old Venetian style village mansions left standing on the island after the 1952 earthquakes. It later fell down due to neglect after many people left the island to find a new life elsewhere. We were lucky enough to meet the owner through a friend when she was wanting to sell it. Chrysanthi had been born in the house and returned to the island in the 1970's and restored her mother's house on the main road and could not afford to restore both houses. So for us the house was steeped in history and we wanted to restore and breathe new life into it. We have never regretted it along with our many guests who continue to benefit from the wonderful location.”
