Cottage in Rohan, Nr. Pontivy, Brittany - Peaceful Location on banks of Canal, but near village amenities, pubs and village shops.

Approximately 200 year old cottage based next to the banks of the Nantes to Brest canal in secluded location, yet only 2 minutes walk from the village of Rohan, which has shops, bars and restaurants. The house is approximately 20 metres from the canal banks, and there are country walks in both directions.

It has 3 bedrooms and sleeps 5 people, and has an excellent patio area with table and chairs and a BBQ with pleasant canal and countryside views.

We live in England, but travel regularly with work.

We bought the property in Rohan as we loved the location next to the canal, but also just 2 minutes from the village centre with its bars and shops. It is so beautiful and peaceful, it is the perfect place to relax, but also enjoy local french life.

Great Fishing Cottage in Quiet Peaceful Area

The cottage is in very peaceful surroundings in a quiet location. The pictures tell the truth - it really is only about 15 paces to the canal and a great fishing spot.

There is no back garden, and all the seating area is out the front. This was not a massive issue since there was not a great deal of pedestrian passers by and the cyclists pass some distance away. Downstairs the adequately sized kitchen leads onto a large sitting room dinning room. The kitchen was exceptionally well equiped - even down to egg cups! My only small two issues were 1. that it would have been nice to have some instruction on how to light the gas oven and 2. The fridge/freezer was a challenge for a couple who really wanted to cook local food rather than go out and eat. It is about 50/50 fridge freezer and would have been slightly better if the fridge area had been bigger. But this is only a personal preference.

Upstairs the large master bedroom has a relatively comfy bed. The bedrooms all lead off each other in a corridor fashion, meaning that if 2 couples stayed here it would mean either one couple coming through the master bedroom to the bathroom or going down one set of stairs and up the other.

Overall we enjoyed our stay here and my husband even caught a large bream!

The house is spacious and well equipped, sitting on a very quiet and peaceful bend in the canal by a lock. Cycling and walking the tow path in both directions, you are confronted by fantastic wildlife, including the amazing Coypu!

Not much English is spoken, which helps bring out the school french, but everyone is so friendly and helpful, with a little French, some English, and a lot of sign language, we all get by.

There is lots to see in the area, and the roads so quiet, nowhere is very hard to get to, we will be going back for another look very soon.

We did not like this property

Regret to say that of the 3 gites we stayed in in France recently, this was definitely the worst. The cottage was damp, cold, unwelcoming, tired and miserable. We did not enjoy our stay there at all and, in fact, went looking for a b&b to book into.

The property was not well maintained and the downstairs in particular was not up to an acceptable standard. The fridge was too small and the staircases were hazardous to say the least. We appreciate the property is old but, really, something should be done with hand rails on the stair cases.

We would not recommend this property to any friends or relatives and we fully understand why the place is up for sale.

Owner's Response: We are surprised by the review, and disappointed that Ownersdirect have only introduced reviews this year as opposed to the 10 years that we have been on the site, as this is the first review. An updated kitchen and decoration was only finished the week before their arrival, and we have repeat guests who have mobility problems and yet return year after year, that have no issues with the stairs. Strangely enough there are hand rails on the stairs, so we don't understand the issue either. The fridge is a normal European style fridge freezer with large separate freezer section, as opposed to American style fridges that the guest may have been used to in South Africa.

The coast is approximately 30 minutes drive with excellent beaches.

Leudeac - 10 minutes drive

Further Details:

There are 4 bars in Rohan, a number of bread shops, and a small supermarket. There is an excellent Creperie, Pizzaria and Hotel with restaurant in the village.

For the children there is a secure playground in the village.
