Gorgeously Renovated Village House with Rooftop Terrace and Great Views

Updated: 24-Oct-2016
House in Medieval Alhama de Granada, inland Andalucia - 5 Mins Walk to Centre of Beautiful Alhama de Granada

* half price entry to Alhama's beautiful outdoor swimming pool with kids' pool, big pool, grassed area, shady umbrellas, and cafe/bar (up to 10 euros); great welcome pack with the best local produce; 2 complimentary breakfasts at Bar El Tigre, one of the best breakfast venues in Andalucia - see TripAdvisor for reviews.

Carefully and patiently renovated to the highest standard, Casa Esquina is a stunning house offering boutique-style accommodation at fantastic value. Our house has many of its original features including wooden beams and terracotta tiled floors but is also modern, comfortable and stylish. There is a large sunny roof terrace with wonderful views stretching for miles across the valley to the mountain of Parapanda. The bathroom has a beautiful mosaic tiled floor and large luxurious shower area. The L-shaped bedroom is romantic and full of character with it's beams and wooden floor. The open plan kitchen/sitting room is impressive at 8m by 5m with lots of comfortable seating and a well-stocked kitchen. A triangular window opens up to the terrace above. For summer swimming there's a local outdoor pool with shaded/grassed area and little bar. There's another outdoor pool next to a restaurant less than 10 minutes drive away. In the gorge there are lovely swimming holes in the Rio Alhama, a short and very attractive walk from Alhama. And, of course, you can take a picnic and swim in the beautiful Lake Bermejales.

Perfect holiday retreat

  • 5 of 5

Fabulous little house with everything you could need for a relaxing holiday. The roof terrace a real bonus, perfect for lazing in the sun and al fresco dining. Made to feel really welcome both at Casa Esquina and in the town. Will definitely by back.

super stylish flat in friendly village

  • 5 of 5

Casa Esquina is a fantastic wee house in Alhama - really cleverly renovated and with interesting artwork, so there's always something interesting to look at. The flat is very clean and well furnished - everything is a good size and really comfortable. The kitchen is well equipped with useful supplies like teas, sugar, herbs etc so you don't need to buy much but there's a fantastic little supermarket with fresh veg and bread practically next door. Lots of stairs and steps, but all wide and solid with good rails. You have to be reasonably flexible to get out onto the roof terrace as it's a low door, at the top of some stairs, but there's a wee balcony off the living area too, so you can get fresh air there, and there are windows all around the property with different views. The wifi works really well, and we enjoyed the large selection of cd's.

The booking was smooth and friendly and the owners continued to be helpful during our stay.

We enjoyed Tony's and another couple of bar/restaurants just down the road - excellent great-value home-cooked food.

We walked along the gorge a few times to a small reservoir and drove over to the big one, where we also hired bikes from the campsite there. I also got the bus into Granada one day which was easy. Sandy did a lot of birdwatching and is list is on the Casa Esquina/ Alhama Accommodation site.

Feeling like a Local in Authentic Accommodation

  • 5 of 5

Beginning of May I have spent two weeks in Casa Esquina in Alhama de Granada. If you wish to slow down your life a few paces and really relax, that is the place you need to go.

Pam and Neil provide a cosy and tastefully refurbished home that makes you feel part of this medieval town. Lots of information is provided with things to see and to do including the best places to eat and where to do your shopping. No chance of getting bored!

A lovely touch was the starter kit of food I found on my arrival with a fresh loaf of artisan bread, butter, free range eggs and a bottle of good red local wine.

There are also great places for eating out (very reasonably priced!), glorious food and free tapas with your glass of wine or beer. Can definitely recommend the “El Ventorro” (lunch only, after 14.00) after having had a bath in their Hamman or after having walked from Alhama through the fascinating gorge.

If you have a car, a trip over the pass and down to the coast can be recommended. The trip takes exactly 50 minutes. My tip would be to go to Nerja with its several beaches and crystal clear water, a lovely town without high build hotels. Visiting the Alhambra in Granada is also a must, but book well in advance of your holiday!

From the time of my first contact I felt very well taken care of by Pam and Neil. All my questions were answered immediately and on arrival I was also given an emergency contact, in case they were away. Everything one might need was provided including DVDs, beach towels, even straw hats! I had my laptop with me and the internet connection was excellent.

All in all, it was a great holiday. I could have easily stayed on and will certainly be back. Thank you very much, Pam and Neil!

Lovely 'boutique' style house in wonderful Alhama.

  • 5 of 5

Spent a wonderful week in this lovely house, near the top of Alhama. Everything you could want here, including great views from the roof terrace! Pam couldn't have been more helpful. Only saw Neil briefly, but made use of his stereo system (and stack of cds)! Lots of information in the house about Alhama and area/walks/eating places etc. Alhama, if you don't already know it, is a wonderful small Spanish town with lots of history, built on the top of a stunning gorge (great walks here). The guy in the Tourist Information is extremely helpful, and speaks English if you need it! A host of excellent café/bars in the town, plus El Ventorro at the end of the gorge (definitely worth going)! Plenty of shops/small supermarkets, including a small shop just 2 doors away for basics. Highly recommended (at the risk of you all flocking there)! Shall definitely be returning!

Home in Alhama de Granada

  • 5 of 5

We love this house so much that we have finished up buying a home in the area......otherwise we would be back again and again. We have stayed twice in Casa Esquina and love it! It is so peaceful. The bedroom is so quiet and the bed really comfortable. Everything that you could possibly need is here and there are lots of lovely pictures and lamps in the house. We love the shower, with the mosaic tiling all done by hand by Pam and Neil. They are superb hosts. The roof terrace looks towards rolling hills and you are 5 minutes from the square. Our favourite bars are La Placeta and Bar Ochoa. This is a fabulous home from home.

Delightful Casa Esquina

  • 5 of 5

We have just recently returned from Alhama and Casa Esquina and what a lovely cosy casa it was. Very clean with lots of homely bits and pieces for our use. Pam and Neil have done a great job renovating this property. Casa Esquina is at the top of the town -quick going down but longer to come back - may be because of the vino and tapas consumed! Alhama is not a large town but has lots of tapa bars and restaurants to choose from. I think we tried most of them but couldn't choose a favourite. Lake Bermajales a short drive away is lovely and ideal for a swim. Unfortunately the pool in the town was not open. A day in Granada and The Alhambra is a must - although we queued for 2 hours to get tickets.(Best to book beforehand if you can). We also drove to Cordoba (approx. 2hrs) which is very nice. We stayed overnight and so able to go and watch some flamenco dancing. We did walk the gorge and had lunch in the restaurant there which was great - also had to walk back!

I know Spain is a large country but you realise this when driving to Alhama and then you get to this lovely friendly town up in the mountains. There a lots of interesting places to visit which you can read about in the literature left in the house.

We certainly had a lovely holiday in Casa Esquina and would certainly love to return - thank you Pam and Neil for helping us do this.

From the Owner

We fell in love with the rugged wildness of the mountains around Alhama then we fell in love with the charms of this lively, beautiful and relaxing little town. The coast and great cities are close by but Alhama feels tucked away from all that hustle and bustle.

Activity and Interests

Special interest holidays:

We have lots of contacts and information about cooking, cycling, walking/hiking and activity holidays based in the area so please do ask us.

We are one hour's drive from Torre del Mar and one hour 10 mins from Malaga.

The Costa Tropical is one hour's drive where you can visit the historical seaside towns of Nerja, La Herradura and Almunecar. All the usual water sports including wind-surfing, sailing, para-gliding and scuba diving are very popular from La Herradura in particular. The towns are attractive and have traditional architecture, old barrios with flower laden balconies and twisting cobbled lanes, and lots of restaurants.

Granada airport is a very easy 45 mins drive. Malaga airport is also straightforward and about 1 hour 20 mins drive. We have comprehensive directions so let us know if you need them. We offer airport pick-up as well.

We are:

45 mins to Granada (there's a bus service too).

20 mins to beautiful Lake Bermajales.

10 mins to Natural Park of Tejada, Alhama and Almijara.

1 hour to Montefrio.

1 hour to Antequera.

1 hour to Nerja.

1 hour 10 mins to Malaga.

2 hours to Sevilla.

1 hour to Lake Iznajar.

Further Details:

Casa Esquina has a great little supermarket 3 doors down. Five minutes away, the centre of Alhama has banks, shops, bars and restaurants. There´s a busy market with local crafts, fruit, veg, plants, flowers, clothes, etc every Friday.

Alhama de Granada, in the fertile heart of the Poniente Granadino in Southern Andalucia, is the perfect holiday destination. The town of Alhama offers history dating from Roman times through Moorish reign and up to modern days. Alhama is very attractive, traditional, bustling and precariously positioned running along the edge of an enormous limestone gorge, Los Tajos. Along the bottom of the gorge run the Rios Alhama and Merchan. Nearby, hot springs gurgle into four thermal pools next to the Rio Merchan. The town has grand, imposing Medieval architecture and lively bars surrounding attractive squares. Surrounding Alhama are soft, pastel shaded rolling hills, attractive small villages and stunning views extending to looming mountain ranges.

Alhama is perfectly situated, close enough for: an easy day or overnight trip to the splendid cities of Granada and Malaga; the sea air of the attractive seaside towns of Nerja and Almunecar; and the striking and exhilarating mountain regions of the Sierra Nevada and the Sierras Alhama, Tejeda and Almijara which offer great walking and wintersports.

Everywhere you look the view stretches as far as the eye can see and takes in gentle hills, green valleys and craggy moonscape mountain peaks. The Natural Park of the Sierras of Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama offer secluded picnic areas, usually next to a river or lake, and lovely walks. For hiking, the peak of La Maroma is at 2,080m and offers year round snow in chasms at the summit and wonderful views of the area.

The attractive towns of Loja (40 mins), Montefrio (1 hour), Antequera (1 hour) and Archidona (1 hour) are all an easy, scenic drive away.

Fabulous Sevilla and Cordoba are only 2 hours away.

Bike hire, walk/hike/cycle tours available.
