About the property

Townhouse in Alora, Malaga Province, Andalucia, Spain - Fascinating Moorish Town Surrounded by Wonderful Countryside

Cuarenta is a stylish rustic townhouse with a traditional style pool and fountains in the white-walled quarter of the fascinating settlement of Alora - a dramatic small town set astride three steep hills and dominated by an old Moorish Castle. For the most part it is still a pueblo blanco (white-walled village) with narrow whitewashed streets, steep slopes, churches, lemon trees and squares where people gather. However, it also has a more modern quarter with reasonable and interesting shops and many bars and restaurants. The town and the house overlook the Guadalhorce valley - Valle del Sol or Valley of Sun - to the mountains of the El Chorro and El Torcal National Parks beyond. The house is in a quiet cul-de-sac on the edge of town, away from traffic but only 5 minutes walk from the centre; so explore historic Old Spain, walk in dramatic hills and valleys then enjoy restaurants, shops and life in a lively and very Spanish town.

About Kevin Mawdesley

We have been coming to Alora for 6 years now. We were looking to buy a house somewhere in southern Spain and knew this was the right town as soon as we arrived. We wanted somewhere that felt “properly like Spain”, true to the traditional way of life with its unique character, but big enough to have plenty of shops, bars, restaurants and other facilities and we wanted there to be lots of interesting places to visit in the area. And we wanted somewhere that was good for walking, which around Alora is magnificent. Despite being in the middle of town we can walk from the door and be in the countryside in five minutes (literally). Then at El Chorro, eight miles north, you have some of the most famous climbing cliffs in Europe, and in the wider area more mountains than you could wish for.

Kevin Mawdesley purchased this house in 2005

Why Kevin Mawdesley chose Álora

And Alora is not just a historic town. It has a more modern quarter with reasonable and interesting shops and many bars and restaurants, all within walking distance. Whether you prefer quiet bars, like Oscar’s in the square, or the lively chaos of Kana’s (thankfully) on the other side of town, there’s a bar you will like. Similarly restaurants, Casa Abilio has the reputation but there are many others, the simple family run El Pelli, the quirky Casita de Aperros (The Tool Shed), Correos – the old post office, the venta La Higuera with it’s splendid views and the rural Roca Bella in the mountains come to mind. Plus, tapas, tapas, tapas wherever you go!

What makes this house unique

But we also have young children and knew that if we always had holidays where we just indulged our own passions they would soon get fed up and not want to come. Alora does well enough for children (play parks, swimming pool, free indoor and outdoor adventure centres) but it only takes us 30 mins to drive to the coast, so there are always days out to the aquaparks, zoos, beach and the rest. So everybody’s happy – and when everybody’s happy, I can find a quiet corner to settle down with a book and a beer! So, as I said at the start, everything you could want, really, explore traditional Spain, live life in this fascinating town, eat in pleasant restaurants, walk in delightful countryside but most of all, relax and enjoy the fantastic atmosphere. Hope you come and enjoy it as much as we do.

Notes on accommodation: We are extremely pleased to have been accredited by “Your Holiday Matters” - an independent assurance of quality. Membership can not be bought, and is only awarded to owners who demonstrate that they really care about providing a consistently high level of customer service and accommodation. Additionally, all applications are objectively assessed by an owners' panel who also directly consult former guests to vouch for their holiday experience. So if you book with us you can be sure the accommodation will live up to expectations and that we will provide everything we say we will! See the owner website for more details. Outside: What really makes the house is the space outside. In this part of Spain for much of the year life is best conducted outdoors and the quality of the space outside of the house is just as important as the accommodation inside. At Cuarenta you first walk into a delightful, plant filled courtyard. Then steps lead up to the first terrace with a brick built BBQ and a small but thoughtfully designed pool, wonderful sitting on the back wall, sipping a drink, dangling your feet in the water and looking across at the mountains. The second terrace is covered to provide a shady area then up to the highest terrace with stunning views across Guadalhorce valley to the mountains of the El Chorro and El Torcal National Parks. We have really had good fun working on the courtyard and terraces and we guess that, like us, you will spend most of your waking hours enjoying the space outside rather than in! Utility Room: Freezer, washing machine, tumble drier, washing sink. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels and linen provided (not beach towels).

a beautiful house with great views

  • 5 of 5

We loved being in the house, especially using the outdoor space, which is much better than it appears on the website. The house is very well kitted out with everything you might need provided. We enjoyed exploring the surrounding area and visiting Alora. Overall, a really lovely holiday.

A wonderful stay in an authentic Spanish townhouse

  • 4 of 5

We couldn't fault Kevin the owner for his friendly communication, clear instructions and going that extra mile for a specific enquiry we had. Cuarenta is easy to find when driving and is in a fab location with awesome views across the valley and only a short 10 min walk to all the authentic Spanish bars/restaurants/shops. The Tapas was out of this world in every restaurant we tried and everything is such good value! Alora is a wonderfully charming town and one of our favourite places in Spain.

The train station is only 5 mins drive down the road which offers a regular train service to Malaga and beyond, to the beaches at Torremelinos/Fuengirola.

Cuarenta has a stunning little outdoor eating area right outside the kitchen designed with a lovely Spanish flavour and lots of well established plants. Up the steps off this area were a number of terraces, a brick-built BBQ, & a small but perfectly formed plunge pool which was really welcome as we experienced a heatwave when we were there. The property is very clean, well equipped with dishwasher, washing machine, etc and is really great value when compared to other properties.

The only reason we didn't give it 5 stars is that, as there is no air con, when we experienced a rather unusual prolonged 38-40c heatwave in September, unfortunately the ceiling fans weren't enough and sleeping was rather difficult (although we totally appreciate that the cost of rental would need to go up to accommodate the cost of air con) so a large standalone fan in the bedrooms would be very welcomed.

All in all, you really cannot go wrong staying here! It is a lovely property, great value, excellent location, with helpful owners, and in a really interesting, historic and friendly town....we will definitely be back! :-)

A delightful house with fantastic outdoor spaces

  • 5 of 5

What a fabulous house Cuarenta is. We had a great week, a perfect mix of activity (Caminito del Rey is awesome, the flamingos less so because we couldn’t see them! And the Picasso museum at Malaga is definitely worth a visit) and relaxation in your wonderful array of outside spaces. Alora is great and we ate out a couple of times but also enjoyed using your BBQ.

A Taste of Real Spain

  • 4 of 5

Just to say, we have had the most wonderful time in Alora. The villa was beautiful and so tastefully decorated. The town was a delight and on a couple of days we took the opportunity to take the breath taking drive into the mountains to the lakes of El Chorro and enjoyed swimming in the lake and sampling the food at El Mirador. It was stunning! We also went into Malaga by train, a fascinating city contrasting the strikingly modern and stylish port area with the traditional old town.

All in all, a fabulous holiday which we all enjoyed immensely and would love to return to one day.

charming house in the old town of Alora with fine Sun terasses

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay in the end of october with both days of hiking in the mountains and bathing in the mediterranian sea. Our three children (5,7 and 10) loved the house and the walks in the old town of Alora.
