About the property

House in Batz sur Mer, petite cité de caractère, Nr. La Baule, Southern Brittany - beach hut May to September.

A large house in the centre of a friendly village with groceries, bread, fish, cafe, pizzeria, all just outside the front door. At the rear of the house are two communicating, entirely walled gardens. There is an outbuilding which contains bikes for all ages, gas barbecue, garden furniture. The house has old, thick walls and there is no traffic noise. The ground floor has head room of just over 6.0ft because of beams, but the rest of the house has high ceilings.

We often go on our own and the house is just as good for only two people!

About Paddy Manning

Despite my name (Paddy), I was born in France of a French father and English mother. I was educated in England and have spent most of my life in England, having married an Englishman. I do speak fluent French.

We bought our house in Batz-sur-Mer shortly after the death of my father in 1985. He had retired to La Baule and we had come to love the area. We have done a lot to the house since then and it has been a very happy holiday home for us, our children and then our grandchildren. It is fully equipped as a home and I feel this has helped the many tenants we have had over the years to enjoy it. I take a personal interest in the letting and many tenants have become friends - even if we have not met!

Paddy Manning purchased this house in 1980

Why Paddy Manning chose Batz-sur-Mer

We knew the area well, my father having lived in La Baule. We preferred Batz because it is smaller and less crowded; also because for the price of a one room flat in La Baule we got this lovely house and garden. It gave us scope for big improvements over the years and we feel it is now a very comfortable family home with a lovely, tranquil garden.

What makes this house unique

We come here a lot ourselves, more so now that we are retired. We love it when it is busy in the summer, with the beach just 4 minutes' walk away and the grandchildren arrive. Also in the winter when it is quiet and the coast regains its natural beauty. We have wonderful walks along the coast and in the salt marshes where we can see avocets and redshanks in abundance.

Our house is so convenient for food shopping - most things just outside the door: small supermarket, fish shop, boulangerie.

Guestbook comments from the owner

- "I had great difficulty in dragging myself away from the peace and tranquillity of the garden...... Thank you again for allowing us to occupy your delightful house and we are reluctantly returning the keys!"

- "Thank you for making your lovely holiday home available to us."

- "Thank you so much for letting us share your lovely home in France."

Several people have returned year after year, as they appear to love it!

Notes on accommodation: The house is well equipped for children: cot, highchair, stair gate. It is a happy family house, to which many people return. Plenty of buckets, spades etc. Wifi broadband with free landline calls to most countries. Outside: Two communicating, walled gardens, safe for children. An outbuilding contains barbeque, a lot of bikes of all ages and for all sizes. Plenty of garden furniture. The garden is quiet and peaceful, considering it is in the centre of a village which is very active during the summer. Utility Room: Next to kitchen: washing machine and dishwasher. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Linen (sheets, duvet covers, towels, but not beach towels) is provided. The house is cleaned between each tenancy but not during the tenancy. Other: Large ground floor room with snooker table, topped by removable table tennis top. Snooker and table tennis equipment available. The house contains a large amount of books, mostly English, to cater for most tastes.

Excellent Stay - Perfect Location - Lovely House

  • 5 of 5

Firstly location is perfect. House is in the centre of the town between a café and a pizza place - both very good. Boulangerie and shop opposite with other restaurants just down the road. Lots of great beaches to choose from.

The house is brilliant with lots of room and a great private garden for eating and relaxing. Wi-Fi was excellent (I used the small office for working which was really helpful).

We have already booked a return trip!

Fantastic holiday

  • 5 of 5

The house is brilliantly situated in the centre of Batz, within walking distance of the local beach and a few minutes drive from one of the best beaches in France, at La Baule. The house was lovely; well-equipped, homely and clean. The kids (8, 9 and 13) and adults all had a great time. Paddy was great and the booking process was simple. Thanks from us all.

Comfortable, well-equipped & good location

  • 5 of 5

We have holidayed in gites and cottages in France for almost 30 years now and the house in Batz was the best equipped we have ever stayed in. It looks tiny, sandwiched between the pizzeria and café but it's like the Tardis when you walk in the front door. There was a lovely garden and the house was only a 5 minute walk to the beach - where a beach cabin was also available for our use.

Great family holiday

  • 5 of 5

We have had a very good holiday in Batz sur Mer.The location is great with many choices. One can sit quietly in lovely garden,go cycling on the bikes provided which were in good order, visit places like La Baule ,Guerande or Nantes.

Mrs Manning was very helpful .She gave clear instructions regarding the house ,and very good information regarding the local area and places to eat and visit. The house was excellent. It was very well equipped ,and very comfortable. The only reservation is ,if one of your party is over 6 foot tall ,the ground floor ceilings are low.I would happily reccomend this house and this location to family and friends.

A Lovely Experience

  • 5 of 5

This house had everything; for my wife, 3 teenagers and myself.

My wife enjoyed the large dining kitchen, with every utensil you might ever need and enough crockery, knives, forks etc for 10+ people.

2 sunny courtyards to sunbathe, have a meal, snooze, watch the tiny lizards sunning themselves on the wall. Comfortable beds, 3 bathrooms and a large lounge.

Apart from the church bells on a Sunday morning, the house is surprisingly quiet for being in the middle of town. Parking is not a problem.

A restaurant either side of us, with a mini-market 20 yds away and 3 boulangeries. Lidl is a 10 minute drive away, and just as inexpensive as in the UK. Carrefour, Intermarche and Le Clerc are a bit further if you need the hypermarket experience.

My 3 kids loved the bikes (6), English Freeview, great wi-fi reception and the snooker table/table tennis table.

I enjoyed the outdoor markets, beautiful beach, tidal rock pools, your own beach hut, (with chairs and parasol), and the fact that everything is so French, but not speaking the language was never a problem.

Le Croisic and Le Pouligen were our 2 most enjoyable days out, the shops are so individual, no High St chains or tacky gift shops. Numerous restaurants, 3 course set menus are usually either 11 euros or 18 euros.

This holiday has now raised the bar for our next holiday.

A nice touch was when Paddy (owner) phoned us on our 1st day to check that all was ok. It was.

There are several beaches in the area: Plage St Michel is a four minute walk away and is where we have our beach hut. It is an attractive smallish beach with lots of rock pools.

Plage Valentin is easily walkable (10 minutes) and is larger with surf. Wind surfing and sailing schools are there. The beach at La Baule is the longest in Europe: vast amounts of money are spent on keeping it in best condition and the huge sweep of the bay is spectacular. About 4 miles (either cycle or drive).

Nearest airport is Nantes - an hour's drive. St. Malo ferry port is about two and a half hours' drive (Brittany Ferries from Portsmouth) 10% Brittany Ferries voucher for any BF crossing; Cherbourg, Caen about 4 hours and about 7 from Calais. Le Croisic (2km away) is the terminus for the high speed train (TGV) from Paris and Lille Europe. It is possible to stay in Batz without a car as all food is available and there are so many lovely walks and cycle rides.

Batz-sur-Mer is on a peninsula with the sea on one side and the salt marshes on the other. Le Croisic, a fishing port, is at the end of the peninsula and is attractive and walkable/cyclable. Le Pouliguen is on the river that separates it from La Baule. La Baule is sophisticated and has its own charm lying among pine trees. Guérande is a medieval walled city, a little inland, and has to be seen. The Brière is a huge freshwater marshland, a conservation area and beautiful.

The salt marshes separate Batz from Guérande. They are a haven of bird life and the colours, ever changing, are a magnet for water colourists. The salt is harvested using methods unchanged for over a thousand years. Salt is sold in all the surrounding villages and at the side of the roads. A museum in Batz gives the history and fascinating facts about the marshes and the area. There are guided tours in the salt pans.

Further Details:

Local shops sell all that is required. Large supermarkets: LeClerc, Intermarché, Auchan etc all in the area. Restaurants abound, many specialising in sea food.
