Beautiful converted Barn + Pool. - Peaceful in the Heart of the Countryside.

Situated in the Charente region of France, yet close to the border of the Dordogne and Haute-Vienne, our beautifully converted barn offers all the modern facilities yet retains many character features. Surrounded by gently rolling hills and sunflower fields, La Tourterie makes an ideal base for walking, mountain biking, horse riding, wine tasting, canoeing, fishing, golfing and site seeing. The barn is open plan with a spacious dining area and lounge with wood burner. The barn has large landscaped gardens front and back with large patio and private pool. La Tourterie is a tiny hamlet 15 minutes walk from the quiet village of Montemboeuf where you will find all the essentials you will need. We are only 15 minutes drive from the pretty town of La Rochfoucauld with its imposing chateau and full range of shops, bars and restaurants. The nearby leisure lake at Lavaud offers scenic picnic sites, sandy beaches, swimming, sailing, mountain biking and has a fantastic adventure park for the children.

About the Owner

We have spent many wonderful holidays in France over the years and explored most areas. Last year we decided it was time for us to move from England to the beautiful Charente area to realise our dream of living a quieter more relaxing lifestyle.

We were drawn to this area in particular, because of the beautiful countryside and lakes, the slow pace of life and friendly local community who welcome you with open arms.

La Charente is typically French with many old traditions still practiced. We love to visit the many local markets, have a lazy lunch in one of the wonderful local restaurants and watch the world go by, or visit Limoges or Angouleme for an occasional shopping day.

We have certainly picked a wonderful part of France and there is still so much to explore and enjoy!

Perfect location, accomodation and holiday

I traveled to France with my wife and two children. The journey from Bordeaux was simple and painless. Due to a delayed flight we arrived late, however the owners were outside and ready to help us the moment we arrived. The 'gite' we stayed in was clean, spacious and well equip with both double and single beds, a fully stocked kitchen and bathroom, television, hi-fi, internet access and even a welcome pack to ensure we had plenty to keep us going until we could reach a supermarket.

The property itself was well maintained, with an outdoor pool that was cleaned regularly, and large hedges for privacy.

The area itself was perfect, with a surprising amount to do for rural france. The owners were incredibly helpful, steering us towards bars, restaurants and places of interest whenever we asked. In particular they informed us of a beautiful restaurant by a private lake, as well as recommending a place to kayak, which was on a very calm river and proved to be an excellent afternoon out.

Overall i couldn't have been more happy with the holiday, and would recommend staying here to anyone. I intend to return soon!

The Charente is full of culture and a great many things for people to see and do. There are a lot of activities for children on the doorstep and we are close to the wonderful city of Angouleme. The countryside around us is stunning making a perfect destination for cycling and walking especially around the Lakes of Haute Charente with their sandy beaches just 15 minutes away. We are surrounded by stunning chateaux and Cognac is less than an hour away. We are situated in a small hamlet but have the village of Montemboeuf with its shops and bars just 1.5 km away. We are very lucky in that we have an abundance of good restaurants in the area and the lovely towns of Montbron and La Rochefoucauld with its imposing chateau an easy 15 minutes drive.

Coast/Beach:

Coast is 2 hours drive to La Rochelle.

Travel:

Ryanair fly from Manchester, East Midlands, Stansted and Southampton to Limoges which is 45 mins drive. Ryanair also fly from Stansted to Angouleme airport (30 mins), Poitiers (1.5 hours) and Bergerac (2 hours). BMI Baby fly from Manchester and East Midlands to Bordeaux which is 1 hour 45 minutes drive. Various other airlines also fly to Bordeaux. There is a TGV from Paris to Angouleme which takes 2.5 hours. Angouleme is 40 minutes drive. The closest ferry port is St Malo which is 5-6 hours.

Distances:

Montemboeuf is 15 minutes walk. La Rochfaucald with its chateau and full range of bars and restaurants is 15 minutes drive. The town of Rocherchouart is about 25 minutes drive and has an imposing chateau. Piegut has a famous Wednesday market and is 25 minutes drive into the Dordogne and the stunning town of Brantome is a further 25 minutes. Cognac is around 1 hour. Montbron is 15 minutes drive with shops, bars, restaurants and supermarkets. The lakes of Haute Charente are around 15 minutes drive

Two fantastic restaurants each about 10 minutes drive away and a selection of restaurants and supermarkets in Montbron and La Rochfoucauld, each 15 minutes drive. There are tours around the distilleries in Cognac, golf, nautical activities at the lakes and a fantastic shopping centre at Angouleme about 40 minutes drive with its ramparts and winding medieval streets, vast array of bars and superb restaurants and historic buildings. Also explore Nautilus, a large swimming and leisure complex in Angouleme. The Charente has one of the richest displays of Romanesque art with all variations represented and a top quality programme of summer festivals and markets.

Booking forms will be sent out to the clients and the price is for the property regardless of how many people stay. There will be a 30% deposit in £ sterling payable into our English bank account, with the remainder due 8 weeks before arrival along with a breakage cheque of £150 which will be refundable upon return after the property has been inspected.

Changeover Day:
Saturday arrival after 4pm and Saturday departure before 10am. Out of season long term lets and long weekend lets are available and check in and out will be more flexible.

Prices are for the property per week in UK Pounds.
Lower prices for smaller parties out of season are available.

The gite has recently undergone a total refurbishment throughout, offering guests all the modern facilities and furnishings expected for a relaxing holiday, without losing the charm of some beautiful original features. The property is spacious and arranged over two floors with the ground floor being an open plan living space, with direct access to both front and rear gardens. There is a flat screen T.V. DVD and Wi-Fi connection. The private grounds are landscaped and the rear garden has an above ground pool with patio area adjacent. To the rear of the gite is a shingle area with table and chairs and BBQ for those relaxing 'Al Fresco' evenings sipping wine and watching the beautiful sunsets. The remainder of the rear garden is laid to lawn with fruit trees. There is plenty of room for children to run around and play in. There are childrens' indoor and outdoor toys/games and two bikes for guests to use. Parking.

  • Notes on accommodation: For winter lets we have a wood burner in the open plan lounge and a heater in the bathroom. Portable heaters supplied for other rooms. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Bedding and bed linen is included. Bath towels are charged at £4 extra per person, and pool towels charged at £4 extra per person. Property is cleaned on changeover day and should be left in a clean condition as found. We have two bikes for guests use whilst staying..no charge.
