About Marion Thorniley

We are a retired English couple who co-owned the property with its original Scottish owner for 13 years and now own it outright. The original owner bought it in 1985 and we have had connections with the house since then. We like to go offseason to play golf and walk the beaches. It has been extended and upgraded since the '80s, as one would expect .

We live in SWLondon and have children and grandchildren who also love the house and what it offers.

Marion Thorniley purchased this house in 2000

Why Marion Thorniley chose Cerro do Mocho

When we bought it, we had known and visited the property since the '70s and welcomed the chance to take it on entirely when the first owner no longer wanted to be involved. We never thought about looking for anything else, as it was so familiar to us and worked so well.

We are in a quiet suburb of Almancil, looking down to Quarteira and the sea. Our neighbours are a friendly mixture of British and Portuguese. The area opposite us is an old olive grove so we are not hemmed in.

We like the villa's proximity to the airport and the views. I might just mention that it is within a few minute's drive to one of the best supermarkets we have ever come across anywhere, so food shopping is never a problem.

As our road is basically a cul-de-sac, there is little passing traffic.

What makes this house unique

The tennis court is an asset as our family now ranges over three generations, so the baton has been handed on from us two oldies.

An outstanding feature is the 1st floor balcony looking down to the sea. We love lazy lunches there, shaded by the awning, evening drinks watching the sunset and relaxing dinners outside.

We like the fact that we can access sunshine and shade from different sides of the house all day long. This also offers guests the opportunity to get away from each other when the mood takes them.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The best testimonial is that several of them have done repeat visits, some of them over a number of years.

Notes on accommodation: Wall-mounted dual heating/air-conditioning units in the three first floor bedrooms, lounge and dining room. The pool is fenced off, so the villa is suitable for small children. The villa has Wi-Fi, 3G, which seems to be better than we have in London. This is a Portuguese house, built along the traditional principles of living and sleeping space being situated on the first floor. This means there are three bedrooms on this level all offering a roughly equal level of comfort. Downstairs there is a small double-bedded room that does not have air-conditioning, but does enjoy a new shower room. On the very top floor, which is reached by steep stairs, and is therefore suitable only for children of a sensible age or young adults, is a small double bedroom, which relies on the downstairs bathrooms for its washing facilities. This room also gives on to its own private sunbathing area. Outside: Extensive patio area round private pool provides ample space for groups of sunbathers, with shady areas available also. 1st floor balcony area has dining table and retractable awning and commands the best sea views. Perfect spot for leisurely lunch. Smaller dining table situated in front garden, and the 2 combined offer the perfect choice of sun or shade. Secluded sunroof terrace on 2nd floor appeals to serious sun worshippers. Mature garden with citrus trees and shaded boules pitch alongside private tennis court. Elevated position offers superb sunset views down to the sea. Utility Room: Washing machine, tumble dryer and fridge/freezer. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Bed linen and towels are included, but not beach towels. Towels changed and cleaning done on third or fourth day of each week; sheets changed and cleaning done on 8th day. Other: Satellite TV, video and DVD players are in the downstairs games room, which has a comfortable seating area. This spacious area also contains a seated bar, pool and table tennis tables.

Beautiful Villa

  • 5 of 5

Casa Cristina is a beautiful large spacious villa with everything you need nicely furnished for your comfort well cared for in a nice location, private but not isolated just a car drive to many locations A/c in most rooms was a godsend with the weather in July the games room was a big hit with two teenage boys, the pool is a good size also the tennis court but too hot to use during the day we only used it in the evening. The maids came in nearly every day to clean and empty bins. We had a small problem with the oven but the management company sorted it quickly.Plenty of sunbeds and seating round the pool all in all a really beautiful villa couldn't find any faults would definitely stay again. We liked the Chinese restaurant went there a couple of times good food and service.I would definitely recommend this villa we had a lovely holiday.

Thank you Marion.

Spacious, spotless and something for all!

  • 5 of 5

A short drive/taxi ride from Faro.

Spacious and spotless on arrival and frequently attended by cleaners who did a top notch job through the week.

Air conditioning, where present, was perfect and necessary, it was very hot all week.

The kitchen had everything you could need and it's a lovely touch having the basics left there for you like like salt pepper herbs etc. Which we added to.

Bedrooms were lovely and en suites and bathroom great. Top room (which has no AC) was too hot though as it was in the 30's everyday and the fan just circulated hot air. Likewise the bedroom downstairs (also without AC) was hot too.

The living room and dining room were lovely but we didn't use them too much as the outside area and games room were great.

The pool was a perfect size for our party and having a toddler the fencing was ideal.

Our teenagers loved the ping pong and pool.

There is a small shop with very basics within walking distance but a car was necessary for supermarkets and beach trips.

Overall we had a great stay and would recommend this villa it had something for everyone and proved relaxing even with 6 children of varied ages.

A lovely family feel.

Thank you Marion and Nick and Idalina.

Stunning Villa

  • 4 of 5

Casa Cristina is a stunning villa which provides first class accommodation for up to 9 people. It is a short drive from Faro Airport and within easy reach of beaches. The villa is ideal for families, it is spacious and equipped with all mod cons to make your stay as comfortable as possible. The pool is a generous size and the outside area offers plenty of sunloungers for sunbathing and also has a lovely shaded area. The games room really made our stay, with its comfy sofas in front of a large TV, pool table and tennis table - the children loved it! We made use of the BBQ in the evenings when we weren't frequenting one of the lovely restaurants in Almancil (the local Chinese restaurant was a real find). If we could make an improvement it would be to have air conditioning in the dowstairs bedroom, but it is hard to find fault with this beautiful place.

Casa Cristina

Perfect location, close enough to the shops and plenty of good restaurants and a short drive to the coast

The Villa was as described with all the facilities you can ask for and if required room to get away from others to just relax or read

With a large games room/tv room, Shower room with toilet and bar down stairs leading out to the pool area with lots of seating, just beyond this is the tennis court and small garden, ideal for families of all ages.

Upstairs is the dining room , lounge and bedrooms with a fully equipped kitchen leading out onto another patio, there is also another small bedroom on the top floor leading to a sun roof

The villa is well maintained and the maid came in at least 3 times during our weeks stay, cleaning, changing bed linen and getting rid of the garbage without our asking.

I would definitely recommend this villa

Plenty of car parking space for larger parties

Owner's Response: We also especially love the wide open view down to the sea, as we are on a hillside - evening drinks on the patio watching the sunset are a delight. And if it is too hot in the afternoon on the southwest facing patio, there is a shady retreat on the other side of the house, which also conversely works very well for a sunny breakfast.
