About Catherine Baikie

Kelvin and I moved from North Scotland to this little piece of paradise in late April 2012 to begin a new chapter in our lives managing the two superb Gites here at Poncet. We were blown away by the superb views all around us and feel like we are on permanent holiday ourselves. What a great way to live. Our first season has introduced us to some wonderful people who have chosen to holiday here and confirmed out decision to move here was the right one.

As previous restaurateurs and hoteliers in Scotland, we have enjoyed this diversity into working and living in France at a more leisurely pace and fulfilled a ten year ambition.

Why Catherine Baikie chose Bordeaux area

After a long and exhaustive search in both Languedoc and Gironde, we finally found and fell in love with Poncet. The views are second to none and gave us the perfect balance of a private family home as well as having two stunning Gites with character to manage, amidst the peaceful vineyards of Cadillac. Its close proximity to Bordeaux and its airport were a huge factor in choosing the the area as well as being a gateway to the Dordogne and Lot Valleys, south to the Pyrenees or north to the Loire. A hour west takes us to the Atlantic coastline and the stylish resort of Arcachon.

10mins will take us to Cerons to give us the choice of taking the train to Bordeaux to enjoy city culture and the fabulous Parisienne style architecture of the vibrant riverside city.

What makes this barn unique

Our guests at Poncet enjoy their own privacy as well as being able to share the pool area with others and for us being on site means we can be there to assist if necessary or be as unobtrusive as required. We can offer our guests the experience of a gite holiday with the added bonus of a few hotel style facilities and service. We provide a welcome grocery pack on arrival to help settle in with a few refreshments and stock the gites with the household basics for guest convenience.

Our guests stay in a tranquil and peaceful setting but are only a few minutes to the market town of Cadillac for all essentials including a selection of good restaurants to choose from.

Highley recommended

  • 5 of 5

A beautiful peaceful location and excellent accommodation. As soon as we booked Cathy was so helpful and on our arrivall she proved to be the perfect host. Both gites looked great but we stayed in the gite overlooking the lovely pool area. The photos on the website do not do the view justice, looking out across the many vinyards and valley. We were treated to spectacular sunsets and dark skies. The whole property and gardens are beautifully maintained and the welcome pack and extras provided very generous and thoughtful including outdoor games and pool accessories. Although there's a chateau and vinyard on every corner the area is not just for wine lovers. The cycling is fabulous with quiet roads & cycle paths, pretty towns, markets and Bordeaux and the coast an hour or so away.

A lovely gite

  • 5 of 5

Petite Lavande is a lovely gite. The view from the terrace across the valley is stunning.

We found the gite clean, well-equipped and very comfortable. The pool was very inviting, and the poolside hot shower a nice touch.

Catherine was a kind, welcoming and very helpful owner, and added to the overall experience of the holiday.

We would certainly recommend this as an ideal place for a quiet holiday, but with plenty nearby to enjoy. Bordeaux, St Emilion and the Bassin d'Aracachon are all easily accessible. As well as by road, Bordeaux can be reached by rail from the nearby station at Cerons. We also visited several of the lovely bastide towns of the area and (surprise, surprise!) a vineyard or two.

Nearby Cadillac has a very, very French market on a Saturday (complete with locals wearing berets), and the Entree du Jardin restaurant there is excellent.

We'll certainly be returning to this gite!

Gorgeous view, comfortable abode

  • 5 of 5

We truly enjoyed our stay at Petite Lavande. The gite was spacious, airy, and immaculate. We were two couples traveling the wine country and found it to be the perfect place to partake of the wines of St. Émilion and the Sauternes/Barsac regions and the wines of the Entre-Deux-Mers as well. Cathy was very helpful in providing information that enabled us to find outstanding restaurants and interesting historic sites. We loved hearing the church bells ring across the valley!

Excellent gite with great host

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from a great vacation at Cathy's gite. It was our second stay, 4 years ago we stayed in the gite as well. We are now a family with 2 boys of 8 and 10 years old.

Both stays were excellent. The gite is clean and very comfortable, everything you need is there. The gite is uniquely located on the top of an hill overlooking the vineyards surrounding it. There is plenty to visit in the area. However the gite is also a great place to just relax. The pool is very nice, with plenty of shaded pool beds surrounding it. The kids could play in the pool and around the house.

On top of this Cathy makes the great difference, she is always approachable, but leaving you your privicy. She takes care of the property very well, e.g. every morning the pool is cleaned.

All in all we had a terrific stay at Cathy's gite and hope to return again in the future.

A little bit of paradise in beautiful countryside

  • 5 of 5

We came here for a long overdue family holiday hoping desperately that this would tick all the boxes for our two teenage/student sons' differing views on what a break involves and the week was a huge, huge success.

Even before we arrived Cathy (the owner) had made us feel very welcome by email and was there to greet us with a big smile and a fridge stocked so thoughtfully with cheese, milk, croissant and a much appreciated bottle of wine.

We had the gite with the pool terrace and the views were absolutely stunning, sitting looking over the valley and surrounding area was so relaxing. Inside the gite provided everything you could possibly need during your visit (and more) and the space worked really well for four people so you didn't feel on top of each other. It was clean, well looked after and very nicely laid out.

As a family we are not great water babes but the pool was absolutely glorious, very well maintained with seating and parasols and so, so inviting!!

Cathy the owner was very discreet but always on hand to give advice or tell you about the area. We frequently had brochures or leaflets handed to us about activities we had asked about which was so helpful (if we had not already found them in the information packs).

The surrounding area had lots of very attractive villages and activities. We especially loved an afternoon of canoeing on one of the rivers and running down the huge sand dunes outside Arachon. Both St Emillion and Bordeaux were well worth visiting!!

So much to do and sadly we ran out of time. It was too easy to just want to spend time enjoying the views and pool!!

So thank you so much Cathy and Kelvin for the most fantastic holiday, it really gave us a little bit of paradise .... and both my boys have said they would come with us again!! That is a true testimony of a successful stay.

Owner's Response: Thank you again for such kind words and it was equally a pleasure have you all stay with us this summer at La Poncetiere. It is a place made to share we always feel. Our photos as beautiful as they are, never do us full justice and we adore seeing our guests arriving and watching their expressions as they take in our 270 deg views over the stunning French countryside of vineyards, villages with their churches and steeples and typically meandering roads over the rolling hills around us. Then to relax on the terraces, enjoy a typical French supper with cheese and wine with the birds singing and vignerons tending their precious crops, church bells ringing to end the days toil....just a few minutes after 7pm each evening. Its a true French experience and just the spot to chill with family and friends. We look forward to seeing you all again. Cathy & Kelvin

Breathtaking, uninterrupted views of Bordeaux wine region with stunning pool and gite.

  • 5 of 5

Fantastic welcome from Cathy and Kelvin. Nothing too much trouble. The gite was well equipped and the welcome pack was most welcome, especially the wine.

Lovely walks nearby and many beautiful towns and villages to visit; but hard to tear yourself away from the fabulous pool and comfortable gite.
