About the property

Set on a hilltop, surrounded by vineyards, the stone building was originally a chai, a wine store. The recently converted self catering gites have been designed to a high standard. Each has an open plan living/dining area with a fully fitted kitchen, and doors to a private terrace. The views are spectacular. On the first floor there are two twin bedded rooms, each with an en-suite bathroom. A perfect place to relax, and an ideal base for those wishing to explore the area. Popular activities, apart from wine tasting, include walking, painting and cycling. St. Emilion is only 35 kilometres away, with the Atlantic coast, Arcachon and the Dune du Pyla about an hour away. To the south the Pyrenees can be reached in under 3 hours.

About Catherine Baikie

Kelvin and I moved from North Scotland to this little piece of paradise in late April 2012 to begin a new chapter in our lives managing the two superb Gites here at Poncet. We were blown away by the superb views all around us and feel like we are on permanent holiday ourselves. What a great way to live. Our first season has introduced us to some wonderful people who have chosen to holiday here and confirmed out decision to move here was the right one.

As previous restaurateurs and hoteliers in Scotland, we have enjoyed this diversity into working and living in France at a more leisurely pace and fulfilled a ten year ambition.

Catherine Baikie purchased this barn in 2012

Why Catherine Baikie chose Omet

After a long and exhaustive search in both Languedoc and Gironde, we finally found and fell in love with Poncet. The views are second to none and gave us the perfect balance of a private family home as well as having two stunning Gites with character to manage, amidst the peaceful vineyards of Cadillac. Its close proximity to Bordeaux and its airport were a huge factor in choosing the the area as well as being a gateway to the Dordogne and Lot Valleys, south to the Pyrenees or north to the Loire. A hour west takes us to the Atlantic coastline and the stylish resort of Arcachon.

10mins will take us to Cerons to give us the choice of taking the train to Bordeaux to enjoy city culture and the fabulous Parisienne style architecture of the vibrant riverside city.

What makes this barn unique

Our guests at Poncet enjoy their own privacy as well as being able to share the pool area with others and for us being on site means we can be there to assist if necessary or be as unobtrusive as required. We can offer our guests the experience of a gite holiday with the added bonus of a few hotel style facilities and service. We provide a welcome grocery pack on arrival to help settle in with a few refreshments and stock the gites with the household basics for guest convenience.

Our guests stay in a tranquil and peaceful setting but are only a few minutes to the market town of Cadillac for all essentials including a selection of good restaurants to choose from.

Notes on accommodation: All around are fields and vineyards and there are no fences. Our gites have the benefit of full central heating in the winter. No smoking inside the accommodation please. Outside: The private swimming pool is 8m x 4m with Roman steps at the shallow end. There is a large patio area with sun loungers, chairs and parasols. The panoramic views from the pool area are beautiful, and it is a great place to watch the sunset. There is a lake and restaurant nearby, at the bottom of the hill, it is within walking distance.

A truly charming gite with a very friendly welcome

  • 5 of 5

Cathy the owner is very welcoming and extremely helpful, she collected our guests from the airport as we were arriving too late to pick them up, and was happy to extend our stay by an extra night. The gite is in a wonderful location, magnificient views, well appointed and comfortably furnished. A very peaceful and relaxing place to stay. It is well placed for visits to Bordeaux, (a local frequent train), St Emilion, Arcachon and numerous pretty, interesting mediaeval villages. We would highly reccomend the gite to those who want a peaceful, hasslefree but interesting holiday in a beautiful location.

Memorable holiday

  • 5 of 5

Perfect would be the only word to describe our stay at Catherine and Kelvin's gite in Omet. Over the years, we have rented many gites and villas in France and our experience in Omet was the best we have had. The gite was spotlessly clean, bright, light and airy and well kitted out. It was also comfortable with two bedrooms with lovely views and overall the gite represented excellent value for money. Catherine and Kelvin are natural and attentive hosts and they added to our lovely holiday.

Excellent accommodation in lovely surroundings.

  • 5 of 5

Excellent well equipped accommodation located in a quiet hamlet overlooking the vineyards. Ideally located to explore the Bordeaux region. The property was clean and well maintained. The owner was very welcoming and could not have been more helpful. Basic food and drink was provided for our arrival so no immediate dash to supermarket required. We would have no reservations in recommending this gite to others. Excellent cycling in the immediate area and good cycle routes along the Midi canal and from Sauveterre to Bordeaux along the old railway line. City of Bordeaux, St Emillion and Arcachon well worth a visit.

Excellent getaway vacation

  • 5 of 5

The small Hamlet of Omet was a perfect get away from it all location. Our gite was well equipped, clean, comfortable with beautiful views over vineyards from the private garden. The pool offered a cool option whilst sunbathing amongst the lavender scented borders. Our hosts were attentive offering advice and information about the area and what it had to offer. Cadillac the nearby town and it's chateau and markets are worth a visit, St Emillion is a must and the coastal town of Archachon mustn't be missed - sunset on the sand dunes - wow! 5 Poncet a special place with fantastic hosts thank you Cathy and Kelvin

Amazing place with lovely owners

  • 5 of 5

I wanted to write a review as soon as we arrived but thought I'd leave it so I could include touring tips as well. Really loved this amazing place with stunning views and easy drives to St Emilion, Cadilac, St Macaire. Catherine was one of (if not the!) nicest owner we have met - so kind and generous, even when we arrived about 4-5 hours after scheduled because of bad traffic driving from La Rochelle. Highly recommend - the people in the other gite were staying for 3 weeks!

Excellent Stay

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our time at this lovely Gite, Cathy and Kelvin were excellent hosts and provided everything we required for our holiday and more. Including Jigsaws and children's games for the evenings and rainy days. The way Cathy had prepared for our arrival was greatly appreciated with her filling the fridge with goodies and even a few bottles of local wine. The BBQ was well used during our stay as was the pool with lovely views across the surrounding vineyards. We would recommend this wonderful and well equipped Gite to people and families of all ages.

Special interest holidays:

Our peaceful panoramic views are stunning and inspirational for artists, writers as well as sun worshipers. Wine lovers will not fail to be impressed with the local Graves reds as well as the sweet whites of Sauternes, Barsac and Cadillac. Try the cremant too at Haux.

The Atlantic coast is approximately 1 hour away by car. The long sandy beaches, well known for surfing, are quite magnificent. The Arcachon Basin, and the town of Arcachon are well worth a visit. The town has many shops and restaurants. Boat trips are also available there. The Dune du Pyla, the largest sand dune in Europe, is just along the coast.

Bordeaux Airport is approximately 35 minutes by car, and Bergerac Airport is approximately 1 1/2 hours by car.

The drive from ferry ports takes approximately 7/8 hours on the very good French autoroutes.

Cadillac 2.5 kilometres; St. Emilion 35 kilometres; Langon 14 kilometres; Bordeaux 30 kilometres.
