(1) We have stayed in lots of French holiday houses and this is certainly the best; clean, well equipped and peaceful. We all had such a super time and found lots to do. It is a lovely spot for children and adults alike (Newrick). (2) A holiday of too many superlatives to list - the perfect tonic to our busy lives in the UK. We absolutely do not want to leave but we are refreshed and relaxed and will be back asap. Thank you, merci beaucoup and au revoir (Nick and Claire).. (3) Definitely the best house we've rented in France (Salters). (4) What a wonderful place. A beautiful house and setting with such thoughtful hosts. We have had the most fabulous holiday and the kids enjoyed it so much they want to move here. We hope to be back so “A bientot” (Hannas). (5) We had a wonderful holiday. The house is lovely, large, very comfortable and well equipped. For the first time ever after 2 weeks, we are not ready to go home! Thank you, we hope to return (Hassells).

Excellent Property With Large Pool in Secluded Location

  • 5 of 5

Le Grand Theuillac is an old dairy on a former farm complex, which has been brilliantly converted and equipped to a high standard. Nothing was lacking, and the weekly cleaning/bed changing service was superb. The amount of space in the building is huge, and there is a wealth of old oak beams which are present in almost every room.

We had exclusive use of the large, solar heated, pool - although this may not always be the case if the owners' family are also resident in the main house. There are three houses on site, one of which is lived in by a helpful French couple who are also estate managers to some extent, making sure the rubbish goes out for collection on the right day, and maintaining the pool. The only minor complaint was that the wifi/internet connection was sometimes a bit unreliable, and gave up altogether for several days during our stay. Not a huge problem but a source of some frustration to some members of our party.

It is a secluded and quiet place, with plenty of privacy. The small town of Cozes is just a few minutes away, with a weekly market and a SuperU etc. The village of Arces, also a few minutes away, has an excellent restaurant (Le Cottage), and the Gironde estuary is just a little longer drive, where there are a number of small harbour towns, some also with excellent beaches. The larger attractions of Royan and St. George de Didonne are about half an hour away.

We would highly recommend this property if you are seeking real relaxation, however it may be a little too quiet for teenagers.

Owner's Response: We so pleased Mr Barr and his family liked the villa and enjoyed their stay. They were particularly blessed with the weather which although reliably good in September was really excellent this year with temperatures more like July’s! Villa guests generally have exclusive of the pool and in the unlikely event the family’s house might be in use during their stay we would always be able to advise at the time of booking. We are lucky to have a reasonably fast broadband connection considering the rural location although we experience the occasional glitch as Mr Barr describes which can be frustrating. However, France seems to be upgrading its internet quite quickly, Orange promise an upgraded service in our area very soon and we can now offer free Hotspot access to our clients. We agree about Le Cottage restaurant which just keeps getting better and better; they are friendly, speak excellent English, welcome children and are especially accommodating of special dietary requirements. We hope we shall see Mr Barr and his family again and in the meantime thank them for their very useful review.

Great place to relax and enjoy the pleasures of France

  • 5 of 5

This is the third family holiday at Le Grand Theuillac and as before the location, the house did not disappoint and the welcome from Kimberly who is quite new was brilliant. This is a great place to take a family group for a relaxing holiday, the pool and snail hunting are the big attraction for the children. For us grandparents the local restaurants never disappoint

Perfect Rustic France

  • 5 of 5

There were 6 adults and 2 children in our party. We stayed for 2 weeks and had a wonderful time.

The villa is reasonably large on the inside with 4 double bedrooms, 2 excellent bathrooms and a seperate toilet with basin. The kitchen is also well equipped. The villa is the equivalent of a British listed building but with a modern interior.

The house is well furnished and comfortable with plenty of sofas and armchairs in the large lounge. Most English TV stations are available.

The pool is large and maintained a temperature of 28 to 29 degrees during our stay. It was serviced during our holiday. The grounds are extensive and beautifully kept.

The area is quiet with good food shopping facilities in Cozes.

There are several good restaurants nearby ( Le Cottage in Arces is recommended ).

Sad to leave but hoping to return one day.

Le Grand Theuillac

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful fortnight's stay at Le Grand Theuillac. The property itself is fantastic - perfect for us and our 2 young children but would easily accomodate a bigger party. Andrea and Steve were great hosts with help being on hand whenever we needed (including leading up to our visit) and the homemade plum jam was delightful! The property was very clean, well-maintained and matched the listing description perfectly. Steve was even there to say hello when we arrived at 4am! We would certainly recommend Le Grand Theuillac and hope to make it back there soon. Thank you Steve and Andrea.

Beautiful holiday house

  • 5 of 5

This is a really super holiday house. It suited our family group (ranging from toddlers to grandmas) ideally, being nearly all on one level, with lovely rooms and lots of space. It has just about everything you could think you might need, and lots of really helpful extras like baby monitors, a buggy and some play equipment. Lovely location, feeling away from it all behind sunflower fields, but within very easy reach of lovely beaches and small nearby towns. The garden is spacious and private, and the swimming pool is a very decent size with easy steps in. We were very sorry to leave and would certainly love to return some day.

Nearest Airport : Bordeaux at 70 Miles Nearest Barpub : Cozes at 1 Miles Nearest Ferry : St Malo at 285 Miles Nearest Golf : Royan at 10 Miles Nearest Train : Saintes at 18 Miles Nearest Motorway : Cozes at 1 Miles Nearest Restaurant : Arces at 1.5 Miles Nearest Beach : Talmont at 5 Miles Car: necessary

Coast/Beach:

Just 5 minutes to Talmont and 10-15 minutes to Meschers & St Georges which have the finest local beaches. There are several sheltered sandy coves, never over-crowded, each with cafe or restaurant and all are backed with trees making them ideal for children. Lots more fantastic beaches within reach (including some famous surfing beaches) many backed by dunes and forests.

Travel:

By car, 5 hours drive from the ferry port at St Malo and just over an hour from airports at Bordeaux and La Rochelle. There are train links but car hire is recommended to fully explore all the region has to offer.

Distances:

Cozes 1½m, Talmont 4m, Meschers 6m, Saint Georges de Didonne 8m, Royan 12m, Saintes 16m, La Palmyre Zoo 20m and a little further away, Cognac 30m, Ile d'Oléron, Rochefort, Iles de Re and Aix, St Jean d'Angely, Angouleme and more.

Further Details:

Cozes has a full range of good independent shops, an ancient covered market and a good Super U supermarket with petrol, car wash and cash machine. Nearby you will also find a monument to the original master, a republican mariner and one-time prisoner of England during one of our many scuffles with France! Happily, things have been smoothed over in the last 215 years!

There are many excellent restaurants within easy reach, some for which we have translated menus, and a very good French takeaway in Cozes where you can pop in and select what you fancy from the day's choices.

Voted one of the most beautiful villages in France, our nearest seaside village is Talmont, a bastide built in 1284 by Edward 1st of England and its appearance has hardly changed since then. Inside the walls, 17th and 18th century houses surround the harbour and hollyhocks and roses line its many pretty lanes. Talmont has two excellent restaurants, artisan shops selling all sorts, a variety of small cafes, crepe sellers, ice-cream shops and an old-fashioned carousel for small children.

There is a local market somewhere every day of the week and the large indoor food market at Royan is open every morning except Monday.
