About Mike Hildersley

Clare and I have been trying to make the move to France and in particular this region for 4 years. We completed on 20 May 2015 and can now turn our dream into a reality. It was all about the work life balance for us and wanting to embrace the French way of life in a region that has so much to offer, set in beautiful countryside and bathed in sunshine. What more could you want?

Mike Hildersley purchased this cottage in 2015

Why Mike Hildersley chose Villeneuve-la-Comtesse

We had researched the area over a 4 year period and just fell in love with the Charente region. In particular where we are as we are only 45 mins from the coast and La Rochelle which is a beautiful coastal town. The beaches which stretch on past Royan are stunning and the coastal road is just amazing. There are zoo's, an aquarium, plenty of stunning beaches, markets, music events, chateau's, the green Venice, pretty towns and villages. There is just so much to see and explore. Big open sky's, lovely countryside and fabulous weather what more could you want?

What makes this cottage unique

Location, close to the coast, close amenities, perfectly positioned to visit tourist attractions yet set in open countryside where you can just relax and enjoy peace and quiet listening to the birds. There is a 12 x 6 meter heated swimming pool which is amazing. It looks out onto open countryside and sunflowers. Simply stunning. Our holiday gites offer high quality accommodation in a perfect location for this area of France. Our guests absolutely love it here and are often amazed by the site and what it has to offer. We pride ourselves on making sure you have a holiday you will remember for all the right reasons.

All our land is fenced for children's safety so when the front gates are closed, they can run and play without the parents having to worry.

Lovely stay in a characterful gite

  • 5 of 5

We can't thank Mike and Clare enough for coming to our rescue when our previous accommodation fell through. Their gite was even better than what we had initial booked. It was a shame we hadn't of seen them first!!

We arrived and got slightly lost, Mike came and rescued us from the next village down. He was a fountain of knowledge about the area and gave us some lovely suggestions on how to amuse our two year old.

The swimming pool with it's sun flower view was stunning and the extra facilities like the slide, seesaw etc helped keep our daughter entertained. The gite was characterful, clean and tidy with it's own private back garden.

If you are thinking of booking with a family there are loads to do!! We really enjoyed La Palmyre zoo where you could feed the Giraffe's popcorn, Port miniature where you can hire a small replica ship and La Rochelle Aquarium. Château Dampierre-sur-Boutonne was well worth a visit with it's maze just 10 mins from the gite. We also took a day trip to Ile de Re with it's golden beaches.

Thank you Mike and Clare for a lovely stay we will hopefully come stay soon.

Beautiful gite, clean, comfortable, quiet and with everything we needed for our 2 week stay including tea coffee, milk, bread, butter croissants and wine! It has a full size freezer which is really useful for a longer stay. It also has its own enclosed back garden complete with barbeque.

Although in a very quiet location, local shops are convenient being only 5 mins away, with a Intermarche supermarket a little further at 15 mins. We were welcomed by Claire and Mike, who gave us lots of idea for places to visit and for eating out, and even with a 2 week stay we still didnt manage to see everything. A fantastic area to visit. The pool is beautifully spotless and its solar heating makes all the difference for an early morning swim.

We can highly recommend any of the gites on the property, especially with the care and attention that Mike and Claire put into them, and into making sure that their guests are happy. One of the best places that we have stayed and and if we visit this beautiful area again we wouldn't consider staying with anyone else. Cannot recommend this enough.

Thanks for a great fortnight!

The gite is beautiful. You are spoilt for places to sit and relax to enjoy the views. Sunbeds poolside and in your own private garden, rattan sofa/chaise lounge in private garden. Table and chairs in your front garden and table and chairs in two different communal areas etc.

The gite has everything you would hope for. BBQ, private garden, family bathroom, ensuite and downstairs toilet, 3 bedrooms and a lovely living room and a kitchen/diner. It is modern, stylish and very recently refurbished.

It is perfectly set up for a family, with stair gates and a communal garden with swings, seesaw, playhouse and a chest of outdoor toys. The pool is fenced off and inflatables are provided.

The place is set in stunning countryside with panoramic views of sunflower and wheat fields. The nearest village with all amenities is only a few minutes away and the hypermarket is about a 10 minute drive.

The owners are extremely accommodating and very helpful. I would not hesitate to recommend this gite.

Peaceful Luxury

  • 4 of 5

This little gite in the middle of nowhere was just the place to relax and take time out. The house itself was compact, comfortable and clean with all the things you could need. It even had a private garden with comfortable garden furniture to relax in. The swimming pool on site was an added bonus. Clean, beautifully sited and difficult to stay away from, but we did, as there were many things to see and do in the area. La Rochelle, The Marais Poitevin, Cognac, and a secret gem in Saintes, to name but a few.

The owners, Mike and Clare, were lovely. Helpful, informative, nothing was to much trouble. They made us feel very welcome.

I would happily recommend this gite to friends and family (but only after I have managed to get another booking in first!!)
