About the property

Quiet situation, great position for skiing and sunbathing; easy walk to bars, restaurants, shops

'Les Fauvettes' is a chalet of 11 apartments, clad in antique wood. Ours is on the ground floor facing west through French windows across our patio and lawn to the mountains, lovely all year round for lazing in the sun, and evening barbecues. The main 'Medran' gondola lifts are about 130 metres away, giving almost ski-in/ski-out convenience Xmas - Easter to the huge 4 valleys system, and surrounded by a choice of bars and restaurants. There are lots more shops, bars etc. nearby, and the town centre is just 600 metres away. Lifts are run in summer, up to 3,300m/11,000ft, giving access to tremendous walks, mountain bike trails, parasailing, and views from the Matterhorn round to Mt Blanc. The town runs an internationally renowned 2-week music festival in July/August, all standards of mountain biking up to International Competition level, equestrian events, and other sports; a superb sports centre for swimming (indoor and heated outdoor pools), tennis, skating etc. Golf: in town is a testing 18-hole par-3, whilst just above town there is a very scenic par-70 course - also Crans Montana which hosts the Swiss Open is about an hour's drive away. Vineyards are not far below, giving an idea of the summer climate - Aosta in Italy via the St Bernard, (either over the top past the hospice at 3,000m, or through the tunnel), and Chamonix/Mt Blanc via the Forclaz Pass are lovely easy day tours.

In 2015 the apartment has been re-tiled, carpeted and painted throughout, and consists of a useful hallway with a wardrobe, coat-hanging, shelves and 2 benches, leading to:

The part pine-panelled living room with comfortable lounge seating - a large sofa-bed and 2 easy chairs with coffee table, side table, small chest of drawers, and a large rug over the tiled floor. There is a television with the main BBC and ITV channels, Sky News, CNN, Eurosport, BBC World Service radio, etc, a DVD player and a CD stereo. French windows face west to an extensive uninterrupted distant mountain view, with a paved patio and an assortment of tables and chairs - excellent for sundowners or a barbecue in late-ski season & summer. There is an assortment of games - Scrabble, backgammon, boules, jigsaws, etc. A curtain divides the room providing privacy when the sofa-bed is converted - this quickly folds out to a large double well-supported mattress (150 x 200 cms; 5' x 6'6") without needing to remove its main cushions. A good assortment of lighting provides atmosphere, and there is a small mirror next to the chest of drawers.

The kitchen/dining end has an oval pine dining table and chairs, (4 fixed, plus 4 folding in a small cupboard when required, all with cushions); a 4-ring electric cooker with oven & grill with extractor fan over, microwave, frig with small freezer compartment, pine dresser and cupboards well stocked with cooking equipment, crockery, cutlery & glassware. A side window next to the cooker provides an impromptu extra frig on its window cill in winter, with a view to the secondary 'Savoleyres' ski area!

The bedroom is part pine-panelled, with fitted carpet and a rug. It has a double bed, and a pair of full adult single bed-sized bunks, all with good quality medium-sprung mattresses. Again, a curtain divides the room for privacy when required. All duvets are John Lewis goose-down, with an assortment of feather and man-made pillows. 2 large fitted wardrobes provide adequate storage, all bedsides have lights and shelves, and there are 2 mirrors.

The fully tiled bathroom also leads off the hall, and has been totally refitted in 2015. It has a loo, a wash-basin with towel rail and cupboard with mirror & lighting over, shelves, and a bath with shower fittings and a curtain. A convector radiator provides quick heating and good drying to three towel rails above.

We have a small cellar where you can store baggage if required, and there is a laundry room next to the apartment with a communal coin-operated Miele machine and separate tumble drier. There is a ski-room by the main entrance.

Outside the main entrance, there is some open parking which the concierge clears of snow as required, and a covered staircase gives direct access to the underground garage where we have our own designated space.

About Graham Lucas

My wife and I both worked for British Airways, she at Cologne Airport and me flying as a captain out of Heathrow. Recently retired, we ski a lot in Verbier, but also with the BA Ski Club, mostly in Austria staying in hotels - the contrast between the styles of the two countries, and with the self-catering life in 'Les Fauvettes,' adds to the enjoyment. In summer, the ambiance is totally relaxed, and the atmosphere during the music festival is most enjoyable, with various open free performances, mountain concerts, etc. After recent publicity about scams involving holiday lettings that turn out not to exist, note that we have been renting out our apartment for many years, with a lot of repeat business, and you will have our home address (High Wycombe/Marlow Bucks area) and landline (01494) phone number in UK for reassurance.

Graham Lucas purchased this apartment in 1980

Why Graham Lucas chose Verbier

The convenience and speed of flying to Geneva, and the 2-hour journey up to Verbier, was, and still is, a great catalyst for owning the apartment here. We have had the apartment from new in 1980, and have gradually improved what it offers in the ensuing years. Much has been renewed in 2014/15 - mattresses, carpet and tiling etc - and the bathroom has been completely refitted in 2015. We like the variety we get from other resorts in other countries, but Verbier has its special attributes which we love to come back to, year on year, winter and summer - winter for the sking and closeness to the main skilift; summer for walking, golf, and the music festival. Our apartment, whilst not huge, is well-planned, comfortable and warm - we hope you will like it too.

What makes this apartment unique

Undoubtedly the best winter feature of 'Les Fauvettes' is its closeness to the Medran lifts - Verbier is a very big town now - such that we often ski back for lunch, then return to the slopes in the afternoon. But self-catering also means that picnics are easy to prepare, so on sunny days we frequently prefer this to using the mountain restaurants, carrying a beer & a flask of wine, with perhaps classic pate-filled baguettes, then finding a scenic spot, well away from the piste, to enjoy it all in peace. If we can still slide around gently to such spots when we're very old, we'll be well content!

In summer, our patio beside the lawn, facing west to a lovely view, gets warm sun until after 8pm - great for lunch & evening barbecues. Also, in summer the lifts are free with the visitors tax which is included in your rent, giving great scope for superb scenic walking.

Perfect Location

  • 5 of 5

Ideally located a couple of minuets walk from the Medran lifts.

There were 4 adults staying and the apartment did not feel cramped or overcrowded. The owners are friendly and responsive to any questions both before and during your stay, nothing is too much trouble.

This was our second year of using the apartment and will be back for a third time

Lovely traditional chalet apartment

  • 5 of 5

Perfect location.. Quiet yet really close to the village centre and Main lift.

We were a family of five.. Very cosy & warm.. Good hot shower.. Amazing views through the French windows to the mountains.. Good hallway for hanging jackets to warm... Great owners, very hands on and super helpful.

Good underground parking.. Definitely recommend for a traditional, cosy, hideaway when skiing in Verbier.. We self catered and the kitchenette served all our culinary needs.. Thanks to Graham & Gerda x

Very clean and convenient apartment

  • 5 of 5

i have nothing but praise for the apartment and the owner, nothing is too much trouble. Including calling me back in five minutes when i managed to lock myself out of apartment and needed the entry code. The location is metres from the Medran lift station and with it access to the lift network. Comes with its own parking place which in Verbier is a definite plus if you are intending to drive,

Owner's Response: Thank you for this nice report - we provide several cut-out aides-memoire with the code for everyone to have a reminder in their pockets, and winter customers should note that the adjacent parking is in an underground heated garage.

The perfect ski holiday

  • 5 of 5

It would have been impossible for the owners of this perfect apartment to have been more kind and helpful. From offering help with flights and transfers to assistance and discount with ski hire. Way above and beyond the call of duty making this the most perfect holiday in Verbier. Close to ski lifts and all the restaurants, shopping and apres ski that Verbier has to offer. The apartment was immaculate and catered for everything and everyone. I couldn't recommend it more highly And can't thank the owners enough.

Dejlig lejlighed med perfekt beliggenhed

  • 5 of 5

If flying and hiring a car, Geneva Airport is 160kms/100miles mostly autoroute - 1.5-2 hours drive. The final road up has no danger from avalanche, so access in/out is not under threat. Direct transfer minibuses/limos can also be booked. Train option - wheel baggage from airport arrival carousel to train, change to charming little train at Martigny for Le Chable, then bus or gondola from Le Chable station to Verbier. (After 3pm you can buy your lift pass in Le Chable to start the next day, and ride free.) In the ski season, there is also a direct bus from Martigny. By car, Verbier is one of the closest Alpine resorts, possible in one day from UK - but check winter tyres/chains rules for the countries on your route.

Aosta - Roman walled town through/over St Bernard, 120km/75 mls; Chamonix, Mt Blanc - over Forclaz Pass (French National Park), 65km/40m; Montreux - 70km/45m; Evian, Rhone Glacier, Crans/Montana (PGA Tour golf), Zermatt, all about 1 hour.

Further Details:

Many upmarket jewellery and clothing shops in Verbier; Pub Mt Fort and Fer a Cheval pizzeria (both 5 mins walk from apt.) compulsory for young crowd; Chez Simon, Chez Dany's, Cabane Mt Fort best character stops on the mountain for skiers and walkers. Credit cards OK nearly everywhere. Big supermarkets below town centre comprehensively stocked - Denner Discount for world wines at below UK prices.
