Detached Character Cottage in Peaceful Rural Hamlet

Updated: 10-Oct-2016
Countryside Cottage in Guegon, Nr. Josselin, Morbihan, Brittany - A Traditional Breton Longère near Historic Josselin

La Ville au Tady is a detached cottage in over 1 acre of land. It is a traditional Breton long-house, or longère, that has been fully renovated while retaining its charm and character. Located in a small hamlet in Southern Brittany, the local village of Guegon is just a few minutes drive through scenic country lanes. Within the village you will find several bars, a general store, restaurant and the essential boulangerie-patisserie for your fresh baked baguette and croissants. The area is perfect for exploring on foot or cycling, with a designated cycle route passing through the hamlet. The medieval town of Josselin with its famous chateau, 17th Century half-timbered buildings, bars and restaurants is a 4 mile drive. Brittany’s largest inland lake is located nearby, with swimming and water sport facilities. Superb beaches are to be found all along the nearby Morbihan coast.

About the Owner

La Ville au Tady is owned by Martin, Esther, Bethan and Megan, and we live in the UK. After many happy summer holidays in Brittany, we decided to buy our own holiday cottage. We discovered a traditional longère in the countryside and fell in love with it. We feel very lucky to own such a beautiful old house, and invite you to share it when we are not holidaying there ourselves.

We price our weeks reasonably and aim to have the cottage occupied for as much of the year as possible. In this way we can help contribute to the local economy by employing our housekeeper and gardener, and help generate income for local businesses.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"Thank you very much for a wonderful holiday! We felt warmly welcome in your lovely cottage and more like visitors than paying guests. You have made it very 'homely' and the attention to detail is fantastic. We appreciated very much the maps and the books about the area and it was very nice of you to 'introduce' your neighbours to us in your information pack.” Eva & John Gauterin.

“In a word, your cottage was lovely. We liked the size of the cottage; it was scrupulously clean and really well equipped." Yvonne and Kelvyn Gracie.

"Arriving at La Ville au Tady was everything we expected - inviting, homely, comfortable and well equipped". Simon Upton & family.

"A beautiful, cosy, well equipped cottage. Wonderful garden. Lovely location. To be fair, these statements do not do justice to the fabulous cottage! It was just so wonderful!" Lisa Evans & family.

a quiet country gite

  • 5 of 5

La Ville au Tady was a very quiet country gite. You could hear the cuckoo in the garden this Spring. Many delightful lizards were seen around the gite and on the kitchen windowsill bathing in the sunshine near their Breton clogs.

The gite was comfortable with everything you needed for a relaxing holiday thanks to the efficient owners.

The countryside around the gite is beautiful.

The historical town of Josselin was nearby for a visit; a small town but very interesting. We also liked Malestroit. The market was good. A walk by the canal and river is lovely.

From the Owner

La Ville au tady is located in beautiful rolling French countryside, yet just 5 miles from Josselin, recognised as one of the most beautiful and characterful towns in Brittany. Besides the miraculously well preserved medieval buildings, there is the Nantes-Brest canal, a great selection of restaurants, and the magnificent chateau. There are many events throughout the year including a medieval festival and free weekly open air music concerts in summer. We love to visit Josselin's Saturday morning market, stock up with the best of local produce, and then have lunch in the sunny garden at La Ville au Tady. Exploring the local towns and villages via quiet country roads is a pleasure, by either car or cycle. Both the north and south coasts are within a one hour drive.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Rennes at 52 Miles Nearest Barpub : Guegon at 3 Miles Nearest Ferry : St Malo at 70 Miles Nearest Golf : Ploermel at 14 Miles Nearest Restaurant : Josselin at 5 Miles Nearest Beach : Vannes at 28 Miles Car: necessary

The cottage is an ideal base for cycling enthusiasts and walkers.

We provide, free of charge, use of our bikes: adult male & female mountain bikes, child’s mountain bike, tag-a-long child’s bike, child carrier, and toddler’s bike.

There are many cycling opportunities to choose from. You can explore the quiet traffic free lanes in the countryside around the cottage, e.g. cycle to the beautiful village of Lizio for lunch and return (10 miles).

Ride a way marked route – there are many to choose from using the route cards available at the cottage. One passes through our own hamlet.

Take the cycle path along the Nantes-Brest canal, just 3 miles from our cottage. This is a top quality cycle path through the best of Breton countryside with picnic benches provided at intervals.

Use the Voie-Verte (traffic free green route) runs from Mauron to Questembert on a 53km surfaced trail.

It may be advantageous for you to bring your own bike carrier for you car, which would extend your options.

There is a huge choice of fine sandy beaches within easy driving distance (45 mins), where you can enjoy swimming, sand yachting, waterskiing, windsurfing, sailing, snorkeling, kitesurfing or body surfing. Some of the most popular beaches are at Carnac, La Trinite Sur Mer, Lamor Plage, and the Quiberon peninsular. There are countless further quiet beaches to discover. Boat trips are available to explore the Gulf of Morbihan and beyond to the Island of Belle Isle.

Several options if arriving by ferry: Saint Malo 70m / 1 hour 40 mins. Roscoff 110m / 2¼ hours, Caen 164m / 2½ hours. Cherbourg 188m / 3½ hours approx. Le Havre 219m / 3½ hours. The introduction of budget flights means that a short-break is a realistic and good value option. The nearest airports are: Rennes 52m / 1 hour. Dinard 63m / 1½ hour approx. Nantes 86m / 1½ hour approx. We offer guests a discount of up to 10% off Brittany Ferries normal rates - contact us for details.

Our local village, Guegon, is just a 5 minute drive and contains a variety of local shops & facilities (bar, general store, excellent boulangerie-patisserie, florist, pharmacy, boules court, tennis courts).

Our local town is Josselin (10 mins) which has two large supermarkets and a selection of shops, restaurants, and pavement cafes in its medieval streets. The Chateau overlooks the banks of the River Oust from where you can hire boats. Don't miss the lively street market held every Saturday.

Further Details:

There are many interesting small villages and larger towns in the region, and certainly more than you could explore in a two week holiday. Auray is a lovely old town with lots of shops and restaurants, an old port and an excellent Sunday market. Vannes is a large town on the edge of the Gulf of Morbihan with an old quarter bustling with good restaurants and small shops. Excellent markets are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays and a famous jazz festival in July. Carnac has excellent beaches but is also world famous for being an ancient and historic place with over 3,000 prehistoric megalithic stones. There is comprehensive information on places to visit and suggestions for activities on our personal web site (link below).

From the Owner

When we set about house hunting, we wanted a traditional countryside property that reflected the character and history of the region – in La Ville au Tady we found exactly what we were looking for. It is sad to see so many of the renovations of old properties have ripped out the heart and soul of the building. This has not happened at La Ville au Tady. The exterior of the longere is much the same as when it was built in 1868. The internal renovations have preserved the character of the exposed beams and inglenook fireplace with a massive granite stone hearth. We have furnished the cottage sympathetically with a complementary mixture of old pine, antique French and modern oak. The large gardens are a delight. We hope you enjoy staying there as much as we do.
