Stanegate Cottage is a converted single-storey cottage, originally a farm building and lovingly restored to provide quality accommodation throughout the year. The views from the cottage are extensive over the local Golf course and looking towards Hadrian's Wall country and the Scottish Borders. 5 minutes away is one of the best sites on the Wall - Walltown Crags and the Roman Army Museum. This area is the best section of Hadrian's Wall.

Superb

The cottage is set in lovely surroundings and is on a no through road so very peaceful. It is just above the A69 so some traffic noise can be heard outside but not at all obtrusive.

A real bonus for me is the regular visits from birds to the bird table right outside the lounge French doors - finch (sometimes a dozen at a time), tit, siskin, greater spotted woodpecker, jackdaw.....

I was hoping not to need it much at the end of April, but the weather was freezing, so the log burner was brilliant, and all the wood you need is supplied free.

It is ideal walking country with Hadrian's wall within 30 minutes walk and route 72 cycle path going through Greenhead, I hardly used the car.

The cottage is dog friendly, but you are requested to keep your dog on a lead around the outside of the property as the owner has cats and dogs are not allowed in the bedrooms or on sofas. Neither the hotel or tearoom at Greenhead allow dogs inside, so you have to go a couple of miles for dog friendly places. The Black Bull at Haltwhistle is lovely and very dog friendly, she loved the free treats!

The cottage is lovely, well appointed, everything provided and the owners are very friendly and helpful.

I would highly recommend this cottage, particlularly at the price, and will return

Owner's Response: While you were here, you certainly explored the area and did lots of walking - the cottage is situated in the central most interesting area of Hadrian's Wall so there is plenty to do.

An cosy cottage to use as a base

A very cosy,homely comfortable and well equipped cottage with a fantastic view across the nearby golf course. - An ideal base for exploring the beautiful Northumberland scenery, very close to Hadrian's Wall and in easy reach of the Northumberland National Park. Beautiful Scottish scenery just over the border, and in easy reach of Alnwick Gardens. Good local amenities approx.5mins by car. The owners were very, very welcoming and they were able to assist with sourcing some mobility equipment for our stay for one of our party with slight mobility restrictions.

Fantastic cottage lovely location

Fantastic cottage set in beautiful surroundings! It really is home from home equipped with everything you need & more. So warm, cosy & clean with extra homely touches & so well presented throughout. It has lovely views onto the golf course & hills beyond. There is so much to do & see from here I would definitely be going back again!! I imagine it would be lovely any time of the year!!

Noise issues.

We originally booked the cottage for a week but ended up leaving after 3 nights. Reason; a lot of noise from the barn wall/roof attached to the main bedroom. We were invariably woken up in the early hours by scratching which we believed was field mice but could have been anything really. We had to leave to get some sleep. The owners are putting traps and sonic deterrents down to prevent any future issues.

Maybe we were unlucky as the owners have informed us that they have been into the cottage since we left and heard nothing.

On the plus side the owners are pleasant, cottage is a good size and views are amazing. Please note the garden is not enclosed to allow any pets to roam.

Owner's Response: The cottage is not advertised as having an enclosed garden. There is a parking space and courtyard and a small patio outside the French windows. Not enclosed.

Stanegate Cottage

This cottage was exquisite and well equipped. In a super location within striking distance of all of the attractions in Northumberland, Cumbria and N. Yorkshire .The hosts Shelagh and Dave are friendly and very sociable. We are looking forward to visiting here again.

If you want dark skies then look no further than here. Well away from any major conglomeration.

3rd visit from Australia - just perfect

In mid October we visited Stanegate Cottage for the third time, in itself this is not remarkable but we travel all the way from Australia with the main aim of visiting Stanegate Cottage again. The cottage is situated in the village of Greenhead a short walk from the delightful Greenhead Hotel which serves delicious meals, and on the edge of the Haltwhistle Golf Course with it's beautiful sweeping views of the countryside. The cottage is always maintained to a very high standard but remains comfortable for you to put your feet up after an enjoyable hike along Hadrian's Wall. Shelagh and David your hosts have the formula just right for your holiday, there is everything you need but the cottage is not cluttered. They are on hand if you need anything but are not intrusive. You can catch the train from Haltwhistle to Carlisle and Newcastle and beyond, or potter round the many Roman sites in the area. A short drive away is Lanercost Priory which has an excellent tea room and gift shop, Corbridge with it's lovely village and bakery, Brampton and Kielder Forest for family activities. Northumberland is such a beautiful area for a holiday with so many walks to enjoy. Shelagh has a bird feeder and keeps it stocked for the locals to visit. Look out for the woodpecker that has visited each time we have stayed. We will be back, and as always we will arrange the rest of our holiday around our visit to Stanegate Cottage. If I could give the cottage more stars, I would.

Notes:

  • Notes on accommodation: Thermostatically controlled central heating plus a wood burning stove. A well behaved dog is welcome. Two dogs maximum. No enclosed space. Strictly No Smoking in the cottage and it's environs. Outside: The cottage does not have a garden or enclosed space, but there is a patio outside the French window overlooking the golf course with a patio table and chairs. There is also a courtyard and parking space at the front Watch our "feathered friends" on the bird table outside the windows - wood peckers, nuthatch, blue tits, coal tits, chaffinch, robin and lots more. Pheasants visit regularly and if you are lucky you may see deer or a red squirrel. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Bed linen and towels are inclusive in the price. For a 2 week booking the linen and towels are changed mid weekend.
