Perched on a hilltop plateau this secluded house and private pool command spectacular views over the Artuby Valley towards the foothills of the Provence Alps. The house is located in the National Park of the Gorges du Verdon, a stunning natural gorge often referred to as the Grand Canyon of Europe. It is an area of outstanding natural beauty. Comps Sur Artuby is a charming, peaceful village, watched over by the chapel of St.Andre, built by the Templar knights, who once lived here. There is a bakery, grocer shop, post office, popular old hotel, restaurants and bars. The Artuby region is a perfect base for hikers, bikers and nature lovers. There are beautiful forests, grassy woodlands and crystal streams, where one can paddle, swim and watch the trout. Picturesque medieval villages cling to the hillside and marked walks take you past ancient churches, bridges and hamlets to find a perfect picnic spot.

About the Owner

I fell in love with this villa and its amazing views over the Artuby valley some 8 years ago and have enjoyed holidays with my family here ever since. However frazzled we arrive, after a few days waking up with the sun shining through the bedroom window and a look at the ever changing views and sky, we always feel peaceful.

Last year we completely refurbished the house with new bathrooms, bedrooms, living room and TV so, for us, it is just how we would want it, and all our guests so far have enjoyed its style and comfort.

We love walking, river paddling/walking and picnics. This year we did the 15km Marcel route along the Gorges du Verdon - amazing! Swimming at Lac st Croix is our children's favourite and my husband loves the food at Hotel les Bains in the village of Comps.

Superb holiday villa

We love this villa! We returned this year again, and it just never disappoints. Sitting on the terrace enjoying spectacular views, in absolute peace and tranquility, yet a few minutes walk into the village for morning croissants and bread. The locals are extremely friendly. The location is superb for exploring the Gorges du Verdon, Lac Ste Croix, and, a little further afield, the beaches of the riviera. The house is welcoming and very comfortable both inside and out. All in all, a fantastic place to enjoy a wonderful holiday.

Superb holiday in a great location

We had a really great week at this villa. It is set overlooking a valley and rocky mountains. You can sit on the large terrace around the pool and soak up the view. The villa itself is very well furnished and perfectly clean on our arrival, and the beds were comfy which meant a good nights sleep. Even though the villa is accessed by a small road, which detaches it from the village, it only takes a leisurely 8-10 minutes to walk into the village to get bread in the morning. A great feature is that at night the small rock face which backs the terrace can be illuminated.

We had a very nice supper for our Wedding Anniversary in the hotel in the village, from our table we could look out to the floodlit chapels of the Templar knight for which the area is well known.

There are nice walks directly from the villa and the circular road route around the Gorges du Verdon starts at the village so it is well placed. Castellane, where you can go White Water Rafting down the gorge is an easy 35 minutes drive away. You need to book the rafting weeks in advance in high season..we used Bueno Vista rafting who were great for both adults and kids.

During our stay there was a slight issue with the pool, which didn't effect us using the pool at all, we informed the owner and she was very apologetic (even though it was no fault of hers) and arranged for it to be sorted without delay, which we thought was very good.

All in all, we had a great holiday at this villa, Yes, we would recommend it to friends....but also, and I think this speaks volumes.....we intend to return again.

Great villa, well located with amazing views

Our family of 4 adults spent 1 week at this lovely villa in Comps but wished we could have had longer as there is so much to explore in the area. The villa is very comfortable and clean with good showers in both bathrooms and stunning views from all the rooms and pool area. It is so peaceful at the villa and we were lucky enough to see about 25 Griffin vultures from the property. The village is an easy 5 minute walk to pick up your baguettes and groceries and there is a choice of restaurants in the village. The climb up the hill to the church and viewpoint in Comps reveals a spectacular 360 degree view of the area.There are also local walks directly form the property and within the village and beautiful riverside spots to picnic and paddle from on the road to Castellane.

Further afield there is so much to do that we couldn’t fit everything in. We can recommend a trip to the Lac de Ste Croix for a swim in the lake, and Moustiers-Ste-Marie, Bargeme and Tourtours are all really pretty medieval villages. Of course a visit to the Gorge du Verdon is a must, we did the white water rafting from Pont des Soleils to Point Sublime and can recommend this to families with children 8+ as the rapids are not extreme by any means and the scenery is stunningly beautiful, if you want more of a thrill go for kayaking in the gorge.

We can thoroughly recommend this villa to you and hope to return in the future.

Comfortable villa with stunning views.

The villa is very comfortable and is situated on a hillside just 400m from the centre of a lovely little village. The most striking aspect of this villa are the breathtaking views which are the best we have ever seen during all our times in France. The villa itself is reasonably equipped and the pool is a good size allowing you to have a dip whilst taking in the views. The surrounding area is famous for the Gorges Du Verdon and many little hilltop villages which are all worth a visit. All-in-all, a very nice comfortable villa within a short travelling distance of some of the most scenic locations in France.

Stunning villa

What a pleasure it was to stay in this beautiful villa in such a stunning location. The views are breathtaking.

The house is extremely comfortable and immaculately clean, and the terrace and pool areas provided the perfect space to relax in.

The villa is a few minutes walk into the village where the locals were very friendly and helpful. We certainly would repeat the wonderful holiday we had and I highly recommend it.

Special interest holidays:

The house is situated in the heart of the National Park of the Gorges du Verdon, the most spectacular gorge and canyon in Europe. The area offers endless stunning opportunites for walking and exploring in beautiful scenary. There is also spectacular white water rafting to be had in the gorges and more gentle canoeing. Fishing and messing about on the crystal clear rivers is also great fun.

Coast/Beach:

The Cote d'Azur and Mediterranean resorts such St.Tropez, St.Maxime and St.Raphael are less than an hour's drive from the villa, where you can find superb sandy beaches and balmy bathing conditions for children. With a car the whole glory and histroy of the French Riveria is there to enjoy.

Travel:

The house is well situated for the international airports of Nice (1and a half hour drive), Marseilles (2 hours drive) and Toulon (1 hour drive). Car hire is available from these airports. A car is advisable to fully appreciate the house and the Haute Var region.

Distances:

The Village of comps Sur Artuby is less than 5 mins walk away from the house. The main large, market town of Draguignan, once the capital of the Var region, is a 30 min drive from the villa. Draguignan is a busy town with an interesting medieval old quarter and regular maket days. There is an excellent tourist information centre here for the whole region with useful maps and ideas. The town has plenty of shops, several museums, cinemas and a theatre.

Further Details:

The house is at the entrance to the Gorges du Verdon, Europe's largest natural canyon which cuts a breathtaking 250m down through piled strata of limestone. The landscape is spectacular and the road that clings to the edge of the ravine from Comps takes you to the beautiful blue waters of the Saint Croix Lake. The canyon and lake provide endless sports and leisure activities from a relaxing picnic and swim on the lakes sandy beaches to white water rafting in the rivers flowing from the gorge. The region's charming villages and their markets are within easy exploring distance. Don't miss the medieval villages such as Bargeme and Trigance which cling to the hillside and offer unparalleled views and a step back in time. Draguignan is the nearest town with a full range of supermarkets, shops, museums and a theatre. Bicycle hire shops are also here.
