Two bedroom, one bathroom open plan rural cottage with large garden and parking for two cars

This typically detached Breton house of about 1900, set in a wonderful location in central Brittany, a few kilometers from Carhaix Plouguer. It is set above a wooded valley and attracts the full sun from sunrise to sunset. Original features include exposed beams and functioning wood burner, with an open plan living area. The mature garden offers a large decking area ideal for 'al fresco' dining or sitting in the shade under the apple and oak trees.

Maison de Soleil

This was our second stay in Maison de Soleil on our way back to England after a tour of Southern France. It was comfortable and homely and we had another enjoyable week in this lovely part of Brittany. The log burning stove was easy to operate and made lazy evenings cosy and enjoyable. Locarn is very quiet although the local tabac/cafe has reopened and sells essential provisions (but there are also supermarkets in easy reach). We were very happy with the cottage and the area - the only improvements would be satellite TV (UK channels) and internet access (the signal for our cell phones was limited) for those that want to stay in touch with the wider world. None-the-less, it was good value for money and we would use the cottage again. Many thanks Lee and Sue.

Peace and Quiet

My wife and I have enjoyed staying here many times now - the tranquil setting of Locarn lends itself to chilling out with Wine and cheese and enjoying each other's company: no TV (but the DVD player is handy) and no internet is a welcome relief from our busy lives. The rear garden is contained, well kept and very pleasant of a summer evening.

Locarn itself is quiet with some nice walks nearby and a great central position for day trips to pretty much anywhere in Brittany. There is a handy shop in the village and even better the church bells were changed a couple of years ago and don't ring through the night anymore (they stop at 10 and don't start again until the morning).

On our last visit we took our (at the time) 9 month old and had great fun bathing him in a plastic box in the shower and letting him crawl round the garden. The wine and cheese when he was asleep tasted even better!

If you're after a get-away-from-it-all holiday, I strongly recommend staying here.

A week in Locarn

The house matched its description well, and was well equipped, well cared for, and - unusual in our experience at this price level - very comfortably furnished. You could genuinely live here.

The garden is excellent, and very private for those who want to sunbathe (we had lovely weather). Nicely laid out and maintained by the local caretaker.

Locarn is usefully placed, being close to the road network, so a good base for exploring this part of Brittany. There is a "voie verte" nearby, which was actually frustrating as we hadn't brought bikes! These are a real asset all over France, and we should learn from them here! The Canal Nantes a Brest is well woth a walk or cycle (some people dedicate a week or more to this alone...). There really is plenty to enjoy on foot in the vicinity, varied, qiet and beautiful.

However, there are negatives too, to this rental, hence the 4/5, and these lay with Locarn itself. As we were there, the only commerce in the village (a little Tabac/corner shop, was selling up, and walking around the village, one would generally see no-one. This isn't uncommon in France, but if you're looking for bustle, look again.

A further negative is the beautiful local church - which is VERY close! The clock rings the bells very loudly and very often, which is hardly ideal when trying to sleep! I suspect this is something you get used to, but the first few nights aren't great. We would certainly recommend the property, and would be happy to stay theer again.

The coastal beaches are approx 1 hours drive away. There are also good man made beaches at the local fresh water lake of Mael Carhaix, about 2 miles away. The Lac du Guerledan approx 15 miles, with beach, cafe and water sports.


Brest is the nearest airport approx 1 hrs drive. Roscoff is the nearest ferry port, again approx 1 hrs drive. A car is essential. This area is popular with touring cyclists, mountain biking, canoeing, water sports, walking the canals etc, Transport is essential.


Centre of village 200 yards, nearest village is Mael Carhaix 2 miles, nearest large town Carhaix Plouguer 8 miles.

Further details:

The larger village of Mael Carhaix has banks, bars, chemist, boulangeries, restaurant and post office. A large play area, lake and beach. Carhaix has all these amenities plus a swimming pool, cinema, indoor karting, ten pin bowling supermarkets and railway station.

  • Notes on accommodation: The main heating is by a large logburner, which is very efficient. There are separate convector heaters in the bedrooms. The bedrooms are light and airy, with lovely views over the valley. Outside: The large rear garden has apple, oak and bay trees giving dappled shade in the summer. It is fully enclosed with hedging and boundary wall. The decking measures approx 7ft x 30ft, patio chairs/loungers and tables supplied. There is a bbq area on the decking with a portable bbq supplied. Utility Room: The utilty cupboard inside cottage stores iron, ironing board, hoover, dust pan and brush, broom, clothes airer. Hot water tank on overnight economy and boost. Cleaning/Towels/Linen/Maid service: Bedlinen and tea towels are provided, you will need to bring beach towels. The property is cleaned on changeover. Other: Attached to the cottage is a laundry room with double drainer sink, washing machine and tumble drier. Alternatively bikes could be stored in this lockable area.
