Holiday Apartment in Carteret, Normandy - Short walk to Blue Flag Beach, Harbour and Marina

This modern first-floor duplex is set in the wooded grounds of a former mansion in the chic family resort of Carteret, and overlooks a quiet tree-lined avenue. Only 2 minutes stroll from Carteret’s waterfront, the harbour activity includes the comings and goings of passenger ferries to the Channel Islands, sailing yachts and trawlers unloading fish. Carteret’s spectacular beaches are warmed by the Gulf Stream and sheltered in summer. They have been awarded the European Blue Flag for water quality. There are miles of un-spoilt coastline and protected dunes. At high tide, the estuary provides a clear stretch of water ideal for visitors to the sailing school. There are many excellent restaurants to choose from within easy walking distance, including the Michelin-starred Marine Hotel. Nearby Barneville offers a weekly market, cinema, concerts and nightclub, and circus for family days out during the summer.

About the Owner

We live in Bedfordshire with our 2 daughters, Sophie and Lucy. James visited Carteret some years ago and loved it – imagine his surprise when his parents mentioned to him that they had found a wonderful apartment in Carteret and they were poised to buy it! It did not take long for us all to decide to purchase together and the combination of school holidays for us and Lesley and Philip’s more flexible timing as retirees means that we all enjoy using the apartment regularly, as well as renting it out via Owners Direct, which we have been doing since 2005. As we are not ‘on-site’ when our guests are using the apartment, we provide local support via our Irish keyholder, Geraldine. Geraldine lives nearby, she knows the area very well and speaks fluent French.

Light and sunny, excellent base for exploring

A lovely light and sunny apartment which is well located for exploring Carteret and the wider Cotentin Peninsular and Normady area. In a quiet area, yet within easy strolling distance of the centre of Carteret which has a good selection of eateries and a great beach. Lots of good local walking to suit most tastes. Further afield there is a fabulous choice of places to explore, from little villages and sections of the coast, to the Normandy beaches, Bayeux and Mont StMichel. Good to have an Enlish- speaking local lady on hand to provide help if it is needed.

A stylish apartment in a chic resort!

I have stayed in this chic and stylish apartment at least once,sometimes twice a year for a period of 10 years.,and in all seasons.Each time I found it immaculately presented,spotlessly clean,with fresh linens and with all up to date facilities in good working order.,and a heating system that is both fast,efficient and effective even in the winter months.Interesting reading material,suggestions for local trips, and videos and music are all to hand if needed.There is an outside balcony,perfect for enjoying an outside apero, and watching both farming and holidaying passers by.It is uncluttered in style,whilst providing all needed for a family holiday.Equally I have enjoyed holidaying both alone, and with friends,and appreciated it being a gated community with friendly French as well as English residents.Local restaurants are fabulous,providing something for every taste,plenty of great markets in the vicinity,amazing walks,swimming,beach sports.It remains a hidden gem. Returning so often I feel I have been returning home,have loved my time here,it is a very easy apartment to enjoy a great holiday in this glorious part of Normandie.I recommend it unreservedly to singles,friends,families,couples.

clean but needs tlc

We stayed here 3 times in the last 10 years, it was still very clean but no attention to detail. The cooker hood light was broken, there were bulbs missing,it was cold when we arrived, the dvd sticks etc. It is a 2 bed duplex with no outside space, the TV is not HD and no longer receives a clear signal....?.. after 10 years of letting it needs a makeover of goods. Tatty chairs and arcane microwaves are not good.

Owner's Response: We always appreciate feedback from guests and it is usually very positive. We are sorry that our guests felt disappointed on this occasion. We work hard to maintain a high standard that meets guests' expectations - in addition to regular attention from our keyholder, we personally make maintenance visits at the beginning and end of each summer season, for deep cleaning and general repairs. We are aware the cooker hood bulb needed renewing but when we attempted to fix it on our last visit we discovered the holder was broken, consequently the job is 'top of the list' for our spring visit this year.

Excellent

Excellent apartment. Layout very easy to manage and very inviting and cosy. Very handy to town shops, cafes and sea, just a stroll away. We had been to Carteret but not for a few years and were pleased to see it was all much the same. Great to have Jacqui welcome us and update on what was still good etc. Would come again.

A Great Apartment

This apartment is very well equipped and very clean and comfortable.There is a French speaking English lady who was there to meet us and sort out any difficulties or queries during our stay. There is private parking for one car and a very easy stroll to the town centre and harbour side.

There is a good variety of restaurants in the area to suit all pockets and a superb beach nearby, a local grocery store and a supermarket a short drive away. Don't miss Thursdays market! The tourist train is fun but book in advance.

We would recommend this apartment.

Location

From the Owner

Within an hour of driving off the ferry at Cherbourg, we are usually to be found at the local creperie planning the rest of our stay over a bottle of wine! We love being in Carteret because of the beautiful (and amazingly clean) beaches, the colourful markets and the opportunity to slow down and enjoy everything that is good about Normandy - cycling with the children along quiet country lanes, strolling back for ice cream on the waterfront after a day at the beach, watching the fishing boats sail in and out, and indulging in fabulous food and wine. Our guests love it too - many have made return trips and some visit every year.

Activity and Interests

Coast/Beach:

Carteret's spectacular beaches are a 10 minute walk from the apartment, they have been awarded the European Blue Flag for water quality and offer great stretches of shallow water for youngsters. A walk around the headland for around 20 minutes will take you to mile upon mile of deserted sands on the Plage de la Vieille Eglise (can also be reached by car). In the opposite direction, Barneville-Plage is popular with French families and there are plenty of water sports on offer.

Travel:

Carteret is an easy 30km drive from Cherbourg along the quiet D650. It is also possible to drive from Caen or Le Havre. The ferry crossing from Poole or Portsmouth takes approx 2½ hours by catamaran and 4½ hours by standard ferry crossing. Use of car is recommended but not essential.

Distances:

Carteret's twin town Barneville is 5 minutes away by car. Portbail, a picturesque fishing village, is a few km south of Carteret at the mouth of the river Ollonde. Both Bayeux and the D-Day Landing Beaches are within an hour's drive of Carteret. Ferries to Jersey (22km southwest of Carteret) run from Carteret's Gare Maritime or Portbail April-October.

Further Details:

Local shops within a short stroll of the apartment include a boulangerie, patisserie and delicatessen. There are several excellent places to eat, ranging from a very good creperie, pizzeria and several waterfront restaurants to the Michelin-starred Marine Hotel. The nearest large supermarket (Champion) is at Barneville, with a large poissoinnerie next door. There is a popular market at Carteret on Thursday and at Barneville on Saturday, with markets at other nearby towns on every day of the week. There is a bank (and cashpoint) and Tourist Office less than 5 minutes walk from the apartment.

The apartment was constructed in 2004, it is modern, comfortable and well-equipped – with none of the drawbacks sometimes associated with older properties. It is in central Carteret and a couple of minutes’ walk from the stylish High Street, marina and waterfront. Also within walking distance are several excellent restaurants including the Michelin-starred Marine – and of course, the beach! For those who want to explore further, there are several market towns nearby, a wonderful coastline with opportunities for walking, cockle-hunting, swimming, horse-riding and surfing and for history-lovers the D-Day Landing Beaches are within an hour’s drive.
