Holiday house in quiet fishing village, very close to sea and sandy beach.
Le Crotoy is a small fishing village which is an easy hour and a half drive from Calais on the Baie de Somme and on the opposite side of the estuary to St. Valery sur Somme. House has parking for one car, enclosed front and rear gardens, two double bedrooms and a large bedroom with four single beds. TV with french channels. Wi Fi available.
Hello,
I am a primary school teacher and I live in London. We bought the house when my children were very small. They are now 32, 29 and 21. We bought it because it was easy to get to from London and because it had the huge sandy beach which the children played on, dug holes in, made sandcastles on and learned to ride their bikes on. We have been coming here for 29 years and I am still not tired of the place. It continues to be refreshing and a treat to come here.
Judy Hammond purchased this house in 1989
The Baie de Somme is a beautiful large river estuary with a huge sandy beach. It is perfect for walking or strolling along at any time of the day and it has especially spectacular sunsets. It faces south and so gets sun all day, 'La seule plage du nord qui face au sud", the only northern beach which faces south, as their tourist advertising says. It has long been the inspiration for artists and several live and work there now. I find the combination of the soft yellows, greys and blues of the sand, sea and huge skies immensely calming and restful and a lovely refreshing break from living in a crowded city. It is also very relaxing not to need to use a car. There is everything you need in the village and whilst there are interesting places to go to in a car, it would be easy to spend a week relaxing in the house and garden and walking on the beach. When the children were small, their favourite activity was to play on the beach.
Apart from the beautiful Baie de Somme, one of the main benefits is how easy it is to get to from the UK. It is a very easy hour and a half drive from Calais on the A16 motorway, which is not often very busy and 15 minutes from exit 24. Despite it being so near, it is still very french and there are lots of summer events in the village itself and nearby such as food and wine markets, music festivals and Bastille Day celebrations. There are also many brocantes or rederies over the summer, like our car boot sales or yard sales. Lots of opportunities to buy charming french items if you have a good eye.
We had a wonderful stay in Judy Hammond house.
I was with my family and we had great moment.
Beach is just in front, 1 minute walking.
House is small and nice. Take 4 minutes walking to reach the center.
Le Crotoy is a nice small and typic village with bakery, restaurants, grocery, fish shop... everything you need in holiday :-)
I recommend this house and Judy is very friendly.
We stayed at Judy`s wonderful old town house for a week-9th to 16th July. So close to the beach and a pleasant stroll into the town centre and the port.
We were blessed with fine warm weather and made the most of it !!
Lots of good resturants--plenty of mussels, fish and good wine !
We took the steam train to St Valery-sur-Somme to explore the old town -very popular.
There is a big market on a Friday at the port-very French ! and beware no one really speaks any English and in fact we did not see one other british car in Le Crotoy for the whole week--marvellous.
We had a bit of a problem parking off road in the driveway--apparently the gates open outwards onto the pavement so we decided to park on the road --no problems for the whole week.
We had a great, peaceful holiday and will return to this region in the future.

The description was very detailed and corresponded exactly. I would say a car bigger than mine, Picasso C3, would not be able to access the front parking space though. The house was very well equipped, we had atrocious weather during our week stay but the store of games, books, videos, and enough space to spread out meant we had a wonderful time anyway.
There were 5 of us, we hired bikes from the hotel opposite and tried the train station at Noyelles, but trains on strike...so no Paris.
The property was clean but well lived in. We felt as if we were in someone's much loved home.
We shopped locally, big shop at Lidl in Rue but local fish and beautiful bread from le Pain Dore, daily. We walked, although wet, across the causeway and admired the wildlife. We walked daily into town along the beach.
The house had all we could ask for and more; it is difficult writing such a good review as I worry I will not be able to book it next time! I would really recommend this house, and its owner to anyone.
The house was very big for the four of us. We were blessed with good weather, the house was so French and equipped with everything you could want. We cooked a lot, sat out on the balcony and conversed in very bad french with our French neighbour (whose dog was named Sarcozy!). The bedrooms were quite hot at night, but this did not overduly bother us. The parking space was most welcome and there is plenty to explore in the area. I would gladly return - it was a dream holiday for us. The only tiny quibble came from the teenager - no wifi???
A charming rustic typically French retreat.
Ideal location 2 minute walk to the lovely Sandy Beach
Short walk to the port with its market. Numerous bars/restaurants
Also within a couple of minutes walk, great to park the car and wander
Catch the local train and take a boat trip.
Would we go back a BIG FAT Yes
This was a lovely home to stay in. Well-equipped with a superb location. Big enough for 8 people. We will definitely return.I have already recommended it to others.
Coast/Beach:
The house is 50 metres from the beach. Le Crotoy has wide, sandy beaches, a fishing port and a small marina. It is a wide river estuary and the water is shallow. Beaches nearby along the coast are better for swimming. Sand yacht and bicycle hire, tennis and riding are available in the village. There are guided walks in the bay at low tide and there is also a large bird sanctuary 2km away at La Marquenterre.
Travel:
96km/60 miles, an easy hour and a half drive on A16 from Calais.
64km/40 miles, one hour on A16 from Boulogne.
Peage/toll from Calais is 5.6 euros.
Distances:
Five mins walk to village centre. Ten mins drive to St. Valery sur Somme. 25 mins to Le Touquet. Two and a half hour drive to Paris, also train links to Paris from Noyelles Station, ten minutes drive from the house.
Further Details:
Le Crotoy has a number of restaurants, bars, shops, supermarkets, bank and Post Office. Two markets per week in the summer and one in the winter. There are also many extra festivals, markets and exhibitions during the year, particularly in the summer months.
