About the Owner

Hello,

I am a primary school teacher and I live in London. We bought the house when my children were very small. They are now 30, 27 and 20. We bought it because it was easy to get to from London and because it had the huge sandy beach which the children played on, dug holes in, made sandcastles on and learned to ride their bikes on. We have been coming here for 27 years and I am still not tired of the place. It continues to be refreshing and a treat to come here.

A great place to stay in Le Crotoy

  • 4 of 5

We stayed at Judy`s wonderful old town house for a week-9th to 16th July. So close to the beach and a pleasant stroll into the town centre and the port.

We were blessed with fine warm weather and made the most of it !!

Lots of good resturants--plenty of mussels, fish and good wine !

We took the steam train to St Valery-sur-Somme to explore the old town -very popular.

There is a big market on a Friday at the port-very French ! and beware no one really speaks any English and in fact we did not see one other british car in Le Crotoy for the whole week--marvellous.

We had a bit of a problem parking off road in the driveway--apparently the gates open outwards onto the pavement so we decided to park on the road --no problems for the whole week.

We had a great, peaceful holiday and will return to this region in the future.

Owner's Response: Dear Rod and Zanette, Thank you for taking the time to write your nice review. I am glad that you had good weather and enjoyed your week. I like the fact that it is so close to Britain but feels so very French and you are right, you have lots of opportunity to practise your french as they don't speak much english. Re:parking, the gates do open outwards and then can be closed when the car is in, but, as you say, often no problems just parking on the road anyway. Thank you again for the review. best wishes, Judy

Fantastic Laura Ashley chic cottage

  • 5 of 5

The description was very detailed and corresponded exactly. I would say a car bigger than mine, Picasso C3, would not be able to access the front parking space though. The house was very well equipped, we had atrocious weather during our week stay but the store of games, books, videos, and enough space to spread out meant we had a wonderful time anyway.

There were 5 of us, we hired bikes from the hotel opposite and tried the train station at Noyelles, but trains on strike...so no Paris.

The property was clean but well lived in. We felt as if we were in someone's much loved home.

We shopped locally, big shop at Lidl in Rue but local fish and beautiful bread from le Pain Dore, daily. We walked, although wet, across the causeway and admired the wildlife. We walked daily into town along the beach.

The house had all we could ask for and more; it is difficult writing such a good review as I worry I will not be able to book it next time! I would really recommend this house, and its owner to anyone.

Owner's Response: Thank you for such a lovely review and I am so glad that you had a good time. You are right, it is a much loved home that we have had for nearly 30 years and we still love going there. Refreshing and renewing is on-going, we have repainted the bathroom and installed a new sofa since you were there, but I hope that the books, pictures, objects and games always make it feel very comfortable and relaxing. I am sorry that you had bad weather but glad you got out and looked at it. The beach and sea are always fascinating to be near. Thank you again for taking the time to post your kind review and I look forward to hearing from you again.

Fabulous

  • 5 of 5

The house was very big for the four of us. We were blessed with good weather, the house was so French and equipped with everything you could want. We cooked a lot, sat out on the balcony and conversed in very bad french with our French neighbour (whose dog was named Sarcozy!). The bedrooms were quite hot at night, but this did not overduly bother us. The parking space was most welcome and there is plenty to explore in the area. I would gladly return - it was a dream holiday for us. The only tiny quibble came from the teenager - no wifi???

A charming rustic typically French retreat.

Ideal location 2 minute walk to the lovely Sandy Beach

Short walk to the port with its market. Numerous bars/restaurants

Also within a couple of minutes walk, great to park the car and wander

Catch the local train and take a boat trip.

This lovely house is perfectly located close to the beach and with plentiful restaurants and shops within walking distance. Great size house for us - family of four. The kitchen contained everything we needed, the bathroom's huge, with a good powerful shower. The water in the sink took ages to drain though, which was a bit of a pain when washing. The lounge and dining room are really homely. Enjoyed watching a few dvds in the evenings. Also appreciated the games provided, particularly yahtzee, which gave us several hours of competitive entertainment! Lovely big garden where many hours were spent enjoying the sunshine shine during the day and the barbecue during the evening. Upstairs the bedrooms were of a good size, and the beds more comfortable than ours at home! The bed in the back bedroom is larger than your regular double, probably more king size. We took a fitted double sheet with us which didn't fit! As the bed is so big it was also pretty cramped in there, but we soon got used to that. The basement could be better lit as the washing machine is down there. The decor in the house is a bit tired and it was quite dusty, but overall it had a good feel to it. The locks on the doors really need replacing as they weren't particularly easy to operate and didn't feel terribly secure. Having said that the town appears to be very safe as we didn't hear a single siren whilst there! It is an area we would definitely return to, and we are already considering booking the house again next summer as we had the most relaxing holiday we've ever had. We were encouraged to cook more with such a well equipped kitchen, which meant we didn't need to worry about getting dressed up to go out for the evening. We enjoyed many walks on the beach and loved the fresh fish and food bought at the local markets. Overall I would definitely recommend this house. Le Crotoy is lovely. Be sure to pack your French dictionary though as it is very French!

Owner's Response: Dear Lisa, Many thanks for such a very nice review. I am glad that you enjoyed your stay. It is always good to get feedback and I have noted all your comments and will try to address them. I know that the bed is a bit big but it is so comfy that I put up with the cramped-ness. I will add bed sizes to the house details though. Decorating in the house is on-going, and the look is relaxed shabby chic but I will have a good look at it when I go in September. Re:dust, the cleaner is usually marvellous so apologies it was less than spotless, will have a word. Also, note taken about the locks, will look at them as well but I have always rather liked the enormous keys and have never had any problems. I have had the house for over twenty years and it has always been a relaxing place to be for us so I am glad that you felt that as well. Thank you again for taking the time to write the review. best wishes, Judy

Location

From the Owner

The Baie de Somme is a beautiful large river estuary with a huge sandy beach. It is perfect for walking or strolling along at any time of the day and it has especially spectacular sunsets. It faces south and so gets sun all day, 'La seule plage du nord qui face au sud", the only northern beach which faces south, as their tourist advertising says. It has long been the inspiration for artists and several live and work there now. I find the combination of the soft yellows, greys and blues of the sand, sea and huge skies immensely calming and restful and a lovely refreshing break from living in a crowded city. It is also very relaxing not to need to use a car. There is everything you need in the village and whilst there are interesting places to go to in a car, it would be easy to spend a week relaxing in the house and garden and walking on the beach. When the children were small, their favourite activity was to play on the beach.

Facilities

From the Owner

Apart from the beautiful Baie de Somme, one of the main benefits is how easy it is to get to from the UK. It is a very easy hour and a half drive from Calais on the A16 motorway, which is not often very busy and 15 minutes from exit 24. Despite it being so near, it is still very french and there are lots of summer events in the village itself and nearby such as food and wine markets, music festivals and Bastille Day celebrations. There are also many brocantes or rederies over the summer, like our car boot sales or yard sales. Lots of opportunities to buy charming french items if you have a good eye.
