Cave House in Cortes de Baza, Granada, Andalucia - Edge of quiet Village

Unusual cave house in private setting, at the edge of the quiet picturesque rural village of Cortes de Baza, with its wide, orange tree-lined streets situated north east of Granada. It is not unusual to see tractors parked outside peoples houses while the farmers have their lunch. The local farmers are olive and almond growers and goat herders. The cave is deliciously cool in summer, cosy in winter. Well appointed with modern appliances and the luxury of an exclusive private swimming pool (Apr to Oct only) and terrace. Impressive view of Jabalcon mountain and rolling hills. Good location for day trips, walking or lazing by the pool. Take advantage of the cheap midweek Ryanair flights. Please note: Penultimate weekend of August is fiesta season in the village.

About The Owner

Ordinary holidaymakers who got the villa/house bug from renting of others. Young family on buying but kids grown up now. Only the one property, so not professionals. Just want to share what we enjoy with others and pay for the upkeep of the pool.

Why The Owner chose Granada

Although very rural and quiet we are on the edge of a village with all facilities. The surrounding area has plenty off beautiful countryside and bigger towns, for shopping. Most nearby villages have markets once a week.

This is a very rural community and you will definitely get to live as the Spanish live. In fact we recommend it for maximum appreciation of the area.

We fell in love with caves. They are all very individual. Although it does seem to be a love/hate thing as, far as peoples views are concerned over cave living, it will always be an experience

What makes this house unique

Your own private pool is a definite plus. Although not all year round we can say it is good for June to Sept and May and Oct are for hardier pool users.

The cave is cool in Summer and cosy in winter, a constant 19 deg. A wood burner makes it even cosier off season.

What a fantastic time we had in the cave house, it really is a lovely hideaway. The weather was unbelievable - up in the 40s which I don't think I've ever seen on a thermometer. We loved the area, delightful village & some wonderful scenery around. The cave house was very comfortable and well equipped too. We've both been raving about the house & area - most people we know seem to want to go on these all inclusive hols & then wonder why they've not enjoyed themselves! - Julie 2013

Notes on accommodation: Cave house is deliciously cool in summer and requires no additional air conditioning. Both bedrooms have tall chests of drawers and bedside cabinets with drawers. There is a wardrobe in the double bedroom. The sitting room has a sofa bed which can sleep 2 people. Electricity and water in price. Replacement gas is by bottle obtained in village at approx 18 Euro. The pool is approx 1-1.5 metres deep please be sure children can cope. Outside: Large private pool (9m x 5m April to October only as not heated) in terrace garden. Garden furniture, pergola, barbecue. Flower beds and pots, young trees. Utility Room: There is a locked storage room next to the pool with additional furniture for use inside the house or out in the garden. There are also parasols and a small barbecue. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Cleaning,towels and linen included prior to arrival. Electricity and water included. Gas bottles for hot water and oven not included can be changed at local garage approx 12 Euro. Other: No satellite TV. The jury is still out on the TV or no TV argument. We do however have a DVD player for the watching of the odd film.

First guest of season "teething problems"

Owner advised us some painting had been done and not to worry about smell on arrival. Arrived Friday lunch time. Cave was cold and damp. Smelt of wet plaster. Dehimidifier was on in thr main bedroom. No glass in woodburnet (it was on top of it and broken). No gas cylinders in gas heater or cooker. Door to cave wouldnt lock... only gate... so added to draught. Numerous emails to owner resolved some issues. Unable to use woodburner until Monday night. Local agent replaced glass but not screw so diy.... brought some wood.... but no saw and broken axe. Bathroom was damp and mouldy. Extractor in there didn't work. Owner said he was coming straight after us and it was first guest teething problems. The cave was not fit for habitation and should not have been let until plaster/ paint was dry. Cold and wet weather didn't help. Owner was let down badly by local agent. Am sure it is lovely in the summer...great location, friendly village and great pool... but it was too cold and damp to appreciate anything...and not being able to lock the door didnt help feeling safe and cosy.

Owner's Response: Phew! Here it goes. No excuses for the work not being finished to a correct standard. We were assured everything would be ready and we assumed it was. We tried to improve things and came a cropper with timing. Its all finished now. Gas Bottles: One full gas bottle provided immediately, and prior to the agreed arrival time. Second gas bottle provided as soon as I'd convinced local agent of importance of extra heating. The gas bottle could have been switched between appliances for the short time between, it isn't too difficult and you might have to do it occasionally under normal circumstances anyway. It was probably the coldest week of the year for the area (they had snow!) and uncommon for that time of year. Maybe the couple were not prepared for this. After all, they had asked for the pool to be prepared earlier than we recommend. Heating: Cave is 18 deg constant. Thermometer in cave confirms this. Because of this minimum heating is usually required and wood burner rarely needed. There was an electric heater already provided but apparently this was not adequate. We have provided a second electric heater for future use. Wood Burner: Glass was probably broken during work, and no one knew about it. Couldn't fix it till Monday as nobody working over weekend. There were still useable sized logs when we arrived, as well as larger ones, maybe we were lucky! Door: Managed to shut it and lock it when we got there. Admittedly it was stiff so needed a bit of force. We will get it planed if it hasn't already shrunk in the better weather. Bathroom: Looked OK when we got there?and pretty much as pictures? Dehumidifier: There is one in main bedroom. We set it away before guests arrive because the main bedroom is windowless and the cave is locked up,and caves need to breathe. This is why many caves only have curtains and not doors. They get the ventilation when you are living in them. We have put a door on for privacy and so while its locked up we want to keep it in perfect condition for you. Think that's everything.

Even though we visited in December when it was freezing, the cave was warm and snug. The milk, bottled water and homemadd cake was a lovely touch. Will definatley be returning! Hopefully in Summer so we can use the pool. Cortes de Baza is a lovely friendly village with good bars and HUGE tapas, no need to eat evening meals! Brilliant in every way and still missing it

Relaxing stay with excellent weather for September

Good outdoor space with variety of seating areas. Had all facilities we needed in the house. Very good wi fi in main living areas. Directions to house from very helpful owners were invaluable. Car essential. Places to visit for walking and towns for days out not too far away. Cave was cool without additional A/C when outdoor temperatures in 30's. Pool was useful for cooling down. Flies outdoors were a bit annoying on some days but outdoor gazebo with dining table and insect net offered some respite and was perfect for outdoor dining. My only suggestion for owners would be to consider changing double bed as frame creaked loudly every time one of us turned over. We didn't try the two single beds so can't comment on those. It is pitch black at night and if your sleep is disturbed by light then this is the place for you, take a torch. Overall we had a relaxing time and quickly adjusted to the quirks of cave living.

Owner's Response: Thanks for letting us know about the bed. The bed thing is very personal but unless people tip us off mattresses can deteriorate in a few months and, if we haven't been in a while, we won't know.

Lovely cool cave house even in the middle of July.

The house is well equipped and has everything required for a very enjoyable stay. In fact we have already booked to return next July.

The private pool is a delight and the covered gazebo area is a welcome retreat from the sun.

Its only a short stroll to the very friendly village of Cortez de Baza. Its only a small place but had everything we needed, banks, a fishmongers, bakery and a couple of small supermarkets also some very nice tapas bars.

We have a few properties in Nerja and have travelled around Andalucia a fair bit but as the title says, we have already rebooked for this lovely cave house.

Cant wait to go back.

Saturday market selling clothes, crockery, watches, jewellery etc. Historic church.

Galera: 10 miles, swimming pool, La Zalona restaurant and others.

Orce: 20 miles. Castle, museum and archaeological site, shops, restaurants, wonderful natural spring swimming pool (with fish in the pool!) with bar & restaurant.

Huescar: (Market town) 4 miles, shops, restaurants. Swimming pool (with fish in the pool).

Baza: 10 miles-Large town, shopping, restaurants, supermarkets, clubs, discos, antiques.

Zujar The thermal baths at Zujar are renowned for their healing qualities. The water is directly from Lake Negratin and is a constant 38 degrees. At the restaurant you can enjoy a meal and stunning views of the lake and mountains.

Guadix is well known for its troglodyte area. This is an area full of cave houses dating back many centuries, strange and quite unique houses built into the rock face. The houses are made from caves with superficial concrete frontages being built on. The whole hillside is dotted with them, some of them palacial inside.
