Town House in Delightful medieval village San Ginesio, Le Marche, - Restaurants & shops the perfect base to explore coast and mountains

Casa delle Mure is situated on the 11th century walls of beautiful San Ginesio with magnificent views of the surrounding countryside from the terrace and all the windows. San Ginesio is a delightful medieval town with restaurants, bars, banks and all essential shops and the central piazza is only a 2 minute stroll from our house & free car park opposite. Public outdoor swimming pool (summer only)a few minutes walk away, tennis courts and public gardens. Ideally situated for both the magnificent Sibillini National Park and the golden Adriatic coast. The Sibillini Mountains are the most striking mountains in the Apennines; in the summer you can swim in Lago Fiastra and in the winter you can ski at Sarnano. This wonderful area includes the outdoor opera at Macerata, so many delightful medieval towns to explore, and shopping for Italian shoes and bags!! Boutiques, markets and at the factory outlets near Civitanova Marche. Don't miss the Palio in San Ginesio on 15th august it is amazing!

About the Owner

We are John and Judith and live in rural Northumberland where we run our own business developing and making Eco friendly products for home and family. We sell our products via our website and to trade customers. From laundry, cleaning, room fragrances to skin care for the whole family. We are now expanding our Trade sales into Europe. We lived in Umbria for nearly 8 years and returned to the UK in 2000 for family reasons. But we missed the Italian way of life and in 2004 we bought our apartment in San Ginesio. We don't have the time to visit our apartment as often as we would like but as our business grows in Europe we plan to divide our time between Northumberland and San Ginesio. We love the Italian way of life and San Ginesio is a special place.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Great location, San Ginesio is glorious with good restaurants and shops. The beaches are beautiful, we have had a wonderful holiday. Bernadette Gregory from Australia.

"Amazing accommodation in beautiful location"

I was wowed by the house itself, since it's built into the medieval town wall. It is very spacious, comfortable and had everything we needed for our short stay. San Ginesio is a lovely town which had great restaurants, friendly locals (even though we can't speak Italian!) and a variety of small grocery shops. I especially enjoyed the cheap wine and Italian cheeses! It's perfect for a quiet relaxing break and also comfortable enough for a longer stay to further explore the area.

Stunning location and a true Italian experience"

This house at San Ginesio allows you to become quickly absorbed into the Italian culture. The scenery is stunning and the location is steeped in history,

Wonderful accommodation in a delightful location.

Casa delle Mure provided us with very comfortable and spacious accommodation and all our needs (including a very welcome cool box!) for a fantastic holiday in medieval San Ginesio. The mountain views from the windows set in the town walls and from the terrace, were spectacular. After long days out exploring the area, we were happy to return "home" to San Ginesio, wander a few steps to the Central Piazza, buy a delicious ice cream and walk to the Park to view the mountains. We were fortunate to be provided with evening entertainment during the Palio by drumming parades, jousting and video mapping of the beautiful Collegiate Church. Friendly locals served us in the grocery shops, butchers and greengrocers. We are still missing the gentle hum of life of the Piazza and would love to return. There is so much more to see. From the Owner

When we were ready to buy a property in Italy we decided to look in Le Marche region as we feel that Umbria had become more comercialised and Le Marche still retains the traditional family environment - much like Umbria was 15 years ago. We visited and read about the region, and eventually decided to look at an area around Amandola as it had both easy access to the coast and wonderful countryside. We planned our house buying visit thoroughly making appointments each day for the first week with 5 different estate agents leaving the 2nd week free for second visits. Having lived in Umbria we knew the problems associated with buying a remote property and spiralling costs of full renovation projects. When we first walked into the apartment at San Ginesio, we both immediately said 'this is it'.

Activity and Interests

Special interest holidays:

15th August is the stupendous Palio in San Ginesio. Over 250 people in period costume take part to recreate the medieval spirit and the event features such characters as the 'Capitano del Popolo', the 'Signori dei Castelli' and the 'Cavalieri' or jousters who are the main protagonists of the 'Giostra dell'Anello'.

The Cavalieri are semi-professional and belong to an organisation called 'Equivalia' who themselves form part of a larger organisation specialising in recreating such spectacles across Italy.

The Sibillini Mountain National Park is great for trekking, mountain biking, horse riding and even paragliding. Many of the mountains rise above 2,000 metres, visit Lago di Pilato & the alpine meadows with rare species of wild flowers.

Grotte di Frasassi is Europe's largest caves and the tour takes an hour past giant stalactites, stalagmites & beautiful tiny lakes.

Macerata hosts the world famous open air Opera in July and August.

Enjoy a day in UN heritage city Urbino.

Just 35-45 minutes drive to the Blue Flag beaches on the Adriatic coast to discover immaculate sandy beaches with palm trees and excellent facilities and the wonderful rocky coves at the base of Mount Conero in one direction and Porto San Giorgio in the other. Many gently shelving sandy beaches with great facilities and glorious fish restaurants.

Locally made leather goods at outlet shops and markets, bags and shoes galore.

Nearest international airport is Ancona (Falconara) 57 miles (92km). Car hire available at the airport but do pre-book. Excellent rail service with car hire facilities at Ancona plus local rail services. There is a Ferry port at Ancona for trips to Split, Patras & Igoumenitsa.

Pescara airport is 2 hours drive, Rimini 2 hours and Bologna 2 1/2 hours drive. Rome a

Macerata is about 25 minutes away with its churches, delightful shops and the open air Opera Festival in July and August. Le Grotte di Fasassi is one of Italy's most famous complex of caves and is about an hour away. Eldorado Park has 5 swimming pools and the highest slide in Europe and is about 37 miles (59km) from the house.

Ascoli Piceno, with its fabulous centre, elegant shops and fine restaurants, is just 41 miles from San Ginesio and well worth the visit.

Further Details:

San Ginesio market is on Sunday mornings. It's held in the main square and overflows to 2 smaller piazze. You can buy clothes, shoes, toys, fabrics and linen. We enjoy meals at Terra Nostra Pizzeria in Piazza Gentili and buy most of our groceries, meat, fruit and vegetables from the local shops. There is also a supermarket just outside the city walls and a Hypermarket at Tolentino. There are 2 banks and cash point machines, public telephones in Piazza Gentili and nearby the Tourist Information Office and a relaxing park of Linden Trees with stupendous views of the mountains.

L'Abbadia di Fiastra provides a peaceful haven in its parklands with bars and restaurants to while away the time plus the Abbey to look round and a good Tourist Office.

From the Owner

It is great to know that you don't have to go out in the car everyday - daily shopping, banking, bars and restaurants all within a few minutes walk. The shopkeepers and bar owners are very welcoming and make you feel at home. During the summer months there are outdoor concerts and festas with the wonderous Palio on the 15th August. Jousting, flags, drums and costumes which goes on all through the day and into the evening. The house is built into the ancient city walls and all the windows and the private terrace look out onto the Sybillini mountains. There is a large free car park adjacent to the house - quiet. We have left available TV, books and games, music, maps and information about places to visit and great restaurants and hope you love it as much as we do.
