Beautiful large secluded villa, fabulous views

  • 5 of 5

We had a week here, and liked it so much we booked again for the following year! The house is really big, loads of room for a big family or group of friends, and very well equipped throughout. It's clean and tidy, the owners were very helpful and a pleasure to deal with. There’s a great kitchen with everything you need, leading into a massive, comfortable sitting/dining room with log fire in the corner. The far end opens onto a sitting out area, patio/sundeck, where we spent a lot of time. It’s ideal for sitting around eating and drinking, and the views are quite amazing. A lovely place to watch the sun set. It’s totally private, hidden away up in the hills, a bit of a windy road going up but you soon get used to it. And it’s really worth it, you can completely relax here, go for a wander in the woods, chill out round the pool (again a good size). There are good shops, not that far away. Nearby is Barga, a stunningly unspoilt little town, good for eating out, and a longer drive takes you to lovely Lucca. After that, you’ve got all of Tuscany to explore… Recommended+++

Fabulous, secluded farmhouse with stunning views!

  • 5 of 5

This old farmhouse is set up high in the mountains and has been beautifully converted with lots of rustic charm. The steep drive up to the house was a bit of an adventurous climb, but well worth it! The house was totally private and well suited for our family holiday. The rooms were spacious and well appointed. There's plenty of communal space with al fresco dining options. We loved the pool and the great views looking out to Barga. There's a nearby supermarket, which was handy, and some great local dining options. Lots to see in the area. We loved it!! Would go back again!!!

Gorgeous villa with beautiful surroundings

  • 5 of 5

The property was very private with easy access the local village by car for food shopping or nice places to eat and drink. For the evenings we had a cosy indoor log fire and the outside had gorgeous fireflies with a clear night sky for stargazing. In the daytime it was warm enough to swim and the pool was lovely and secluded. The bedrooms are comfortable and spacious and my friends and I all had a wonderful time. I would thoroughly recommend it.

Top price but not top quality

  • 2 of 5

This is without doubt a charming villa set in beautiful surroundings. But given the amount charged (for a villa that's not close to the major Tuscan cities) we expected a better standard of accommodation.

The "private drive" up to the villa is in fact a poorly surfaced track that's difficult to navigate - in fact, our car got completely stuck in the gravel and had to be towed out. Driving up it in the dark was treacherous.

The villa, though charming, was not particularly clean when we arrived, and had various things in it broken or not working. The machine that was supposed to keep the pool clean didn't work, and the pool net was broken, which took a few days to sort out. Two of the rings on the hob weren't working. There was no hanging space in four of the five bedrooms. The bathroom lock was broken. The fridge wasn't very cold and was constantly wet inside. All this might be acceptable if you were paying less, or if you were borrowing the house from a friend, but we felt that the price charged indicated accommodation of a higher overall standard.

In addition, there was no indication in any of the advertised material that the outside space is uneven and difficult to walk on. There are two sets of grass steps outside the property, one of which had unsecured paving stones on it - fine if you're nimble but not fine if you're not. We felt this should have been pointed out in the listing.

Finally, the listing states that it is 10 minutes from Barga (the nearest town). This is incorrect - it's actually about 25 minutes.

I wrote to the owners on our return with a list of all the things that had been unsatisfactory. Unfortunately - despite the fact that they had been very helpful before our holiday - they appeared unconcerned about all the things that we had felt fell below standard. So I have no way of knowing whether any of the problems in the house have been addressed.

Owner's Response: I am sorry that the villa did not meet your needs. We were aware that you had a problem with the drive and the pool and we responded immediately. Our neighbour assisted you on the drive, our agent came also to assist and the pool maintenance man attended on Sunday to re clean the pool. The pool is on the hillside and if there is wind or exceptionally dry conditions then indeed the pool does get dirty, we responded to your comments as swiftly as we possibly could, all personnel were with you within a matter of hours. Regarding the drive, the previous guests' comments are also on OD - they clearly did not have the same issues that you experienced and evidently enjoyed their stay. I will attempt to get in touch with the guests that came after you in order to also get them to post their view on their stay. It is of course important that guests have a clear view of the property that they are renting and we do try to be as honest and open as we can be, we try, although clearly, we cannot please all of the people all of the time. Regarding the matter of our perceived lack of concern of your email, I did respond and said that we would look at all your comments although we did not agree with them all. We visited the property in September to address your points, they are of course of concern to us. I was unaware that you required a further response to this and once again I apologise. We have been renting the property for in excess of 10 years now and in the main we have had positive comments from our guests, as I said, we will never please everybody but we will do our best. I wish you happy holidays in the future and trust that your experience would not stop you visiting our beautiful area again.

A beautiful villa that has something for everyone

  • 4 of 5

Well the pictures do not really do this villa justice. The surrounding views, woodlands and facilities are just stunning. The villa is superbly kitted out and having the large pool in the blistering summer heat was a blessing to us all. There was 7 of us in our party and you never felt on top of each other - always a place to find peace or sit on the terrace and enjoy a shared glass of wine. It was well presented and we enjoyed having all the mod cons and had many fun nights making good use of the selection of games. My husband loves to cook and the kitchen was great for preparing our meals or breakfast outside. Our contact Suzie could not have been more helpful and gave good instructions on how to find the villa and made sure we had all we needed for a good stay. If you are used to this kind of area in Italy then you will know that access roads can be challenging and this is the case here. However you get used to this very quickly and you simply can't have this stunning location without a little bit of effort. This is a great place for a large group of people, either just to relax and unwind or for visiting the many beautiful towns, restaurants and festivals in and around this area. This place has the wow factor and you will be totally smitten by its charm.

The perfect getaway

  • 5 of 5

A scenic hours drive north from Pisa Airport, this stunning Tuscan villa was beyond our expectations. Large and extremely comfortable, literally equipped with everything you could possibly need, including a good selection of music, games and dvd's for the kids. The local supermarket was only about 15 minutes away so cooking and eating in was no problem. The views across the valley from the terrace were breathtaking, a great place to start the day with breakfast and end the day with several glasses of wine! We had a wonderful meal in Barga, and great fun cycling around the walls at Lucca. Further a field, Pisa and Florence are a must. We had a fantastic holiday and have recommended this haven to everyone!
