Comfortable Ground Floor Apartment with Garden Within Easy Reach Of The Beach

Updated: 17-Oct-2016
Apartment near Beach in older Praia da Luz, Western Algarve; Garden with Sea Views - Well equipped and comfortably furnished with secluded garden; Close To Beach, Shops And Restaurants

The apartment we call simply '4B' is in one of the most attractive locations in Praia da Luz, with pleasant well-tended gardens in front. And yet it is no distance at all to the fine sandy beach that is ideal for children of all ages: you can wear beach clothes there and back, and easily return for a drink or snack. There is plenty of room in the paved garden for you to dine in the open air or sit in the sun or shade. Near enough to buy hot croissants for breakfast are supermarkets that sell everything that you could need and a café with free wifi. A good bus service (or Taxis if you prefer) runs from the 'Church Square' at the end of the road into Lagos. We think that Lagos is by far the nicest town in the Algarve. But 4B is not a place for those who hate cats! There are two or three who call regularly to look for food put out for them (by friends of ours who will not disturb you) and to make friends with anyone staying in 4B. They will add a delightful dimension to your holiday.

On a formal note, you can be confident that you would be making a legitimate booking because under new strict legislation our apartment has been accepted by the Portuguese authorities for registration as a 'Local Rental Property': the Registration Number is 6558/AL.

About the Owner

We are both retired. We bought 4B after visiting the Western Algarve regularly for many years, staying in and around Lagos. We let the apartment more as a hobby than a business and though most lettings are made solely by email we usually get on good 'pen pal' terms.

We have made some good friends in Praia da Luz, including Gillian and John Ballinger who look after the (now very few) cats that visit the garden regularly to see who is staying and find the breakfast that John has put out for them.

Surpassed our expectations, pictures do not do it justice. 3 of us enjoyed a very comfortable stay. Extremely clean apartment with everything close to hand. We timed the walk to the beach which was exactly 3 minutes from door to being on the sand. Restaurants, shops, bars and bus stop even closer. The location is very central but at the same time peaceful. The apartment due to lush greenery that surrounds the terrace makes it very private. As stated you must like cats as one in particular will drop by for a feed, which is provided. However, they appear to know that they are only welcome on the terrace and even if doors are open never venture into the apartment. There is a TV provided but we never even turned it on, in our spare time we tended to play cards or games which are all provided. The only one negative is that there is no wifi but this is offered in all bars, restaurants and even the local supermarket. Had a very relaxed holiday and came back feeling chilled and fresh.

Owner's Response: We are always delighted when guests enjoy our apartment as much as we do. We aim to fit it out as a comfortable home rather than a minimalist holiday 'pad'. We think that most of our clients choose 4B because of this: see earlier comments that suggest that they were not disappointed.

This is the first time we have rented this apartment and have not been disappointed. It is a short distance from the beach, cafe's and a few stalls selling clothes and other trinkets. The supermarket is 2 min walk away, the nearest restaurant just across the road, bus and taxi stand nearby. The area is lovely and quiet actually very peaceful. The apartment is well equipped, very clean and comfortable. A lovely outside area is good for eating . The cats are friendly and enjoy a little petting. Luz has all you need for a perfect holiday and 4B is a perfect place to stay. HIGHLY RECOMMEND

Perfect position.

This is the second time we have rented this apartment and have not been disappointed. It is a stones throw from the beach so a car is not necessary. The supermarket is 5 mins walk away, the nearest restaurant just across the road. The area is lovely and quiet. The apartment is well equipped and very comfortable. A lovely outside area is great for eating al fresco. The company of cats is a bonus. Luz has all you need for a perfect holiday and 4B is a perfect place to stay for a couple.

Compact and well equipped, everything you could possibly need was supplied including beach chairs and umbrella! Very convenient location, 4 minutes walk to the beach, two minute walk to the first of many restaurants and bars.

From the Owner

We had visited Praia da Luz when we were staying in Lagos and fell in love with the place. We found the beach and its cliffs enchanting, and the old part of the village was so unlike the tower block resorts along the coast between Alvor and the airport at Faro. Luz was, and still is, a good place for a quiet holiday free from night club noise and disturbances. And yet it has all the facilities of a modern small town, with good supermarkets, chemists and (should you need it) medical care. Over the years the road between the airport and Luz has improved so much that if we catch an early flight from the UK we can be unlocking the door in time to have lunch in the sunnt garden.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Faro at 97 Kilometres Nearest Barpub : Luz Tavern (and others nearby) at 150 Metres Nearest Golf : Boavista at 4 Kilometres Nearest Train : Lagos at 13 Kilometres Nearest Motorway : A22 IC4 at 10 Kilometres Nearest Restaurant : Many nearby at 150 Metres Nearest Beach : Praia da Luz at 150 Metres

The beach is only a short walk away, and the famous Black Rock cliffs can be seen from the garden. The main beach is sandy and ideal for young children, with rock pools to explore nearby at low tide.

A variety of water sports are available in season.

A pleasant promenade has seating for the less mobile to enjoy the view.

A few minutes' walk to the west leads to a rocky coast where experts hunt fish using snorkels and spears.

Within easy driving range there are good surfing beaches.

The nearest airport is Faro. New roads have reduced the driving time to about 1 hour. There is an economical shuttle bus service from the airport, or Taxis are available at around £60 for a single journey. Adventurous visitors can take the train!

Though a car is a great advantage, it is not essential; there are many firms to choose from but we always use Luz Cars. There is a good bus service from the village centre to Lagos and the western coastal towns.

Lagos is about 10 minutes drive away. Many people think that it is by far the nicest town in the area. Within easy drive you can reach the west coast and find unspoiled beaches with Atlantic surf. For something quite different there may be an international class motor sport event at the Autodromo Internacional Algarve (opened in 2008). And for the more adventurous, the A22 motorway makes day-trips to Lisbon, the Alentejo and Spain feasible.

Further Details:

Within a few minutes easy walking there are a good selection of shops including a comprehensive modern supermarket. Equally near is a wide variety of bars and restaurants providing all kinds of cuisine, including a 'pub' for the homesick Brit!

Not so near and inaudible (thankfully) there is a nightclub, but do not expect too much in the way of 'bright lights'. The loudest noise at night is usually the waves breaking on the beach.

There is a wide selection of restaurants, from traditional Portuguese through various European cultures to Asian and Chinese. Many stay open during the winter months, but if your favourite is closed the town of Lagos is so easy to visit that there is a vast choice of cuisines and prices available throughout the year.

Praia da Luz has many of the facilities that you would find in a good-sized town, including for example a Post Office and branches of the main Portuguese banks (and Barclays).

The bus service is very good and the main stop is within sight of our front gate.

From the Owner

From the start we appreciated the very short walk to the beach, particularly in the early morning when the sand is almost deserted except for one or two keen joggers. Similarly later in the day it takes only a few minutes to reach the fine promenade and the excellent cafés and restaurants. The town square, with its famous church and good bus and taxi services, is within sight of the front gate. Just off the square is the main cluster of good restaurants, including the ancient Fortelesa. And there are friendly bars and cafés (with wi-fi of course). If you prefer to walk, swim or dive rather than sit on the sand then to the west of the Fortelesa there are rocks sloping down to the sea and fine coastal walks to Burgau and beyond. Visit our own web pages to see more about the location.

  • Notes on accommodation: Heating is not often needed, but a fan heater and electric radiator are provided just in case. All-night electric blankets are in the cupboard but have seldom been used! There is ample wardrobe space (hanging and shelves) and a chest of drawers. Most visitors are agreeably surprised by the size of the apartment, its convenient layout, and the comfortable lived-in feel. It does not have the bare 'minimalist' atmosphere of some commercial properties. Since Portuguese beds are harder than many people are used to we have added 'memory foam' mattress-toppers to the twin beds Outside: A sliding glazed door leads from the living room to the paved garden or patio, where there is room to dine or lounge. There is a table (with umbrella and dining chairs) and loungers. We have raised and panelled the gate, and trained climbing shrubs along the front wall, to screen the garden from passers by. A locker by the gate is used to store food for the cats. There is a small yard at the back, outside the bedroom and accessible through a sliding glazed door. Part of the space is sheltered by the stairway to the first floor apartment, and might be useful for temporary storage of low-value equipment. There is a parking bay at the front of the shared lawn and ample parking space in service roads behind the block. Utility Room: No separate utility room, but in cupboards there is an iron and ironing board and customary domestic equipments Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels and linen are provided; maid service is once a week. In summer gas, water and electricity are included in the price but owing to unpredictable energy costs these will be metered for winter lets. Other: There is a sunbed, large umbrella, patio table and extra chairs for visitors who enjoy outside living, and beach chairs to use on the sand. The yard at the rear could be used to store equipment such as a roof rack. There is a parking bay at the front.
