About the Owner

We've been married over 20 years (how time flies when you're having fun). We moved to the area in 2003, after redundancy, in search of an "adventure" and to escape the City rat race. We've never looked back. We live here permanently, absolutely love the life and the area. So much so, that all our family now live in France within 45 minutes of us. None of us would even contemplate going back to the UK, it's great to visit, but for us, this is home. We went from being bankers to builders, creating the gites, to running our own business and love every day. We also love our free time during the winter, to go on holiday, whether it's cruising or diving or both. Or the odd building project for the family. Life is never dull and now we're doing it all over again.

Thank you for our introduction to the Dordogne. The memory of the incredibly warm pool is one we will cherish. The boys think you are the best hosts ever & we cant think of anything you’ve not provided. The boys are already asking when we can come back. We hope to return soon. The gite, pool & gardens were perfect. Best of all was the hospitality and kindness shown through out our stay. Thank you for allowing us to share your home - keep on doing what you’re doing, you’ve got it cracked. David & Eileen, Sept 2012

We knew from your immediate email response & kind offer to “set us up with a few things” that we would be in for a treat. Proven correct ! by your wonderful hospitality & excellent recommendations. Harriet & Alec, USA, May 2012

Wonderful holiday

  • 5 of 5

What can I say about our stay with Alison and Alex !! From the moment we arrived until our very last evening, we were absolutely thrilled with everything from the pool to the sun deck. Having never before been to the Dordogne, we found A and A's knowledge of the area to be really helpful. We managed to eat at their favourite restaurant (twice) !! Having been on numerous gite holidays in rural France, I can honesty say that everything was perfect, even down to the oyster opener !! We ate and drank with A and A and have rarely felt so relaxed. Alex gave me advice on which lake to fish and where to fish and I managed 10 carp over the two weeks, with the biggest just under 30lb. I'm so glad I took my strong line. We will most certainly be returning to Le Monchat....if only to throw the ball for Nellie

Fantastic Holiday

  • 5 of 5

I have had a wonderful 2 week holiday at Le Monjat. I have had fabulous recommendations such as the night market and firework display at Le Bugue. The pool has been awesome fun and the hot tub is a great way to finish. As of restaurants I suggest La Chai and coulant chocolat (chocolate fondant.) Nelly has also been a fun dog to have around.

Thank you

Alex and Alison have been great hosts, booking restaurants when you can't. They have made the stay as good as it was. Also, Nelly was a great dog to play with, making it no easy job to beat her in games.she is an excellent dog if you want to throw her ball for her. In the morning she sometimes comes round to make sure everyone is ok. The pool has been amazing with a retractable cover enabling you to swim in the early morning and at night. Alex and Alison make sure you settle in well. To me, the stay was excellent. There is a kayaking and canoeing plae in Le Bugue where you choose where you start from. Thank you so much.

'Great location' is about all I can add to what the kids have said. Alex and Alison are brilliant hosts, the pool and gite are excellent. We had a brilliant time and this might actually make it into the bracket of somewhere we will visit more than once - something that only one other property has been able to claim for us in the last 25 years.

Accomodation beating expectations

  • 5 of 5

My fourth visit to this gite was as I have come to expect, a warm welcome on arrival at this well appointed gite. Owners are friendly and on hand most of the time with advice on things to do and always aim to meet any additional requests. The pool and hot tub are always clean and at a reasonable temperature and set in the private garden with superb views are perfect to relax in. Cendrieux is well placed for access to tourist destinations in the Dordogne and Vezere valleys as well as the larger towns and cities of Bergerac, Perigeux and Bordeaux. Cendrieux itself is a small village and has a bar/restaurant, 'relais' (mini-market) and post office.

There are many good restaurants within 30 minutes drive from Cendrieux, we would highly recommend Julien's at Paunat, Couleurs at Campagne or any restaurant in Tremolat.

Another wonderful holiday at Le Monjat

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed at Le Monjat many times and it just gets better and better, we now refer to it as our second home! We spent three glorious weeks in Gite 1 in June. The accommodation and facilities are as described and maintained to a high standard. Having such friendly owners as Alex and Alison living (discreetly) onsite is a bonus and we spent many an enjoyable evening together sharing a bottle of wine. There is so much to see and do in the Dordogne area and too many lovely restaurants to mention and we are looking forward to our next visit to test the new and long awaited restaurant in Cendrieux.

I would definitely recommend Le Monjat Gites for a memorable holiday.

Castles, swimming & markets

  • 5 of 5

Alison & Alex deliver everything they promise. The gite is very well placed for exploring the beautiful countryside, and the provisions are excellent. Alison seems to thought of everything, including what you didn't know you needed until you looked! The welcome was warm, the beds comfortable amd the garden fabulous wahtever time of day(or night) you sit out. The pool and hot tub were a bonus for us, but a very welcome one.Wwe explored castles and rivers in the area, and also visited a night market which was a must see! We will be back as a week wasn't long enough.

Great French holiday cottage experience

  • 5 of 5

We had a fabulous time at Le Monjat - so good we stayed an extra night! Alison and Alex are excellent hosts, unobtrusive but very friendly and helpful with suggestions of places to visit and restaurants to try.

The cottage itself was comfortable, clean and cosy. A well-equipped kitchen, two bathrooms with great showers and a comfy bed made for an easy two weeks. Even better is the outdoor space - heated pool, lovely garden and stunning views of the countryside. Whilst the patio to the gite is adjacent to that of gite 2, there are also lots of spaces in the wider garden to use for relaxing or playing games from Le Monjat's box of fun! Finally, of our best memories is sitting in the hot tub with a glass of fizz, watching the sun set.

In terms of the local area - there is a lot to do! We particularly enjoyed Beynac, canoeing along the dordogne, wine tasting around Bergerac and the cycle trail from Castelnaud to Daglan. In terms of food - the shop in the village is well-stocked and we found most trips out involved driving past the Big Intermarche in Le Bugue. We couldn't get in at the famous Chez Julien (next time!!) but two particular foodie highlights were the tasting lunch under the trees at Le Vieux Logis and Les Truffieres in Tremolat, a ferme-auberge.

Location

From the Owner

The property is set in stunningly beautiful rolling countryside. It's incredibly peaceful, yet just minutes away from all the most popular tourist attractions. It's also within easy reach of the major towns - the regional capital Perigueux, Sarlat and Bergerac, very handy for the airport. Cendrieux is a working village, with lots happening throughout the year. We even have night markets in summer. We wanted a challenge to renovate a property and that's what we got. It was a steep learning curve, but great fun and now we really enjoy seeing the pleasure on every one's face as they walk through the gate. An estate agent rang last week to see if we're interested in selling - I said "nobody could offer us enough money, we feel like we've won the lottery" especially now the hot tub has arrive.
