About the property

Farmhouse Nr Castelnau-Montratier, Lot, Midi Pyrenees - Secluded Position with Wonderful Views

La Borde Basse is a well-equipped farmhouse built in 1834 of the local white Quercy stone, set in a fold of hills overlooking a tranquil valley and with lovely views to the south and west. There is a walled swimming pool, and the house is surrounded by 9 acres of private grounds at the end of a half-mile drive. There is plenty to do and see both locally and slightly further afield.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We have had a wonderful week to celebrate our silver wedding anniversary. The house has been just as we had hoped, well-equipped, perfect for entertaining a group of very special friends. (Mr & Mrs P, Hitchin, June 2013.)

A wonderful 2 weeks - fabulous house. Excellent sunshine, meteoric thunder & lightning show too!! Would definitely recommend canoeing at St. Antonin, book in advance & take a picnic. (HG, East Sussex, August 2013.)

The gite is exceptionally well equipped & the grounds are superb. We have had a super holiday and only wish that it had been longer. (GW, Weymouth, August 2013.)

Fabulous stay, house perfect for three families sharing, very pretty. (G family, Suffolk, July 2014.)

We have had a splendid time with lovely weather. We had a great time canoeing at St. Antonin Noble Val. The house is lovely, beautifully equipped. (PC, Leeds, July/August 2014.)

We have had an excellent week here for our family gathering. The pool was a great hit, particularly for the five children. The house has proved to be perfect for us - no neighbours to worry about & plenty of space. (RP, Kendal, August 2014.)

We have had a great week but not the best weather! We love La Borde Basse and can't think of a better place to stay. It's almost too good in our opinion, with everything we could have wanted. If we could take this house home, we would!!

We have played tennis in Castelnau-Montratier and it's 7 Euro for the key from the Tabac. We have enjoyed football and rugby at the Stade, and the markets, especially Wednesday evening market and band night in the village. We are really sad to leave and have settled in to the beautiful place. (K family, Oxfordshire, August 2014.)

We have had a lovely relaxing week in this beautiful house. The weather has been a bit disappointing at times but we have still had enough sunshine to enjoy the beautiful pool. (AE, Cornwall, August 2014.)

We have all really enjoyed our week at La Borde Basse, despite not having sunshine all day every day! We have seen lots of wildlife, including many lizards, beautiful butterflies, bats, and lots of deer! We have played lots of badminton and ping pong and used the pool lots which has been very fun. Thank you for a lovely week. (EE, Cornwall, August 2014.)

We have had an absolutely fantastic time in this gorgeous house. What a treat it was to wake up to an amazing view. The pool was used constantly and we had many a meal sitting out on the terrace by the kitchen. Canoeing on our wedding anniversary was definitely the highlight of the week - we managed a 10km canoe followed by a meal in Castelnau-Montratier on Wednesday eve when there is a live band playing in the main square. So sad to return home but will treasure our holiday memories in La Borde Basse. We hope to return one day. (C family, Surrey, August 2014.)

Another wonderful holiday. Beautiful house, beautiful weather. Look forward to coming back again. (CP, Kent,

Notes on accommodation: With two terraces and large downstairs rooms, as well as the grounds and pool area (with games room), there is always a quiet corner somewhere even if the house is full. On the other hand, if there are only a few of you it is not a house which feels uncomfortably large. Outside: The house and barn stand in nine acres of garden, meadow and woodland. On hot days there is always a shady spot somewhere, especially on the covered terrace or under the trees, and cars can be parked under cover. The 10m x 5m pool has a depth of 1.1m to 2m, with roman steps into the shallow end. It is sheltered by the adjoining barn wall and other stone walls, which means that there is always both sun and shade on the paved surround. In conformity with French legislation, the pool is accessed only through a locked gate with two closing mechanisms, and the surrounding walls meet the minimum height criteria. There is a barbecue set in a sheltered area next to the barn. In the ground floor of the barn, reached from the pool area, there is a games room with table tennis and table football. There are tennis courts in the village 2km away, and a 9-hole golf course within 20 minutes. Utility Room: Washing machine, iron & ironing board, high chair, cot etc. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Bed linen and towels (including pool towels) are provided, one set per guest. Normal end of stay cleaning included. Key holder lives locally.

Perfect house for a family holiday

  • 5 of 5

This beautiful house in lovely surroundings was all that we could have wished for, being in a peaceful country location and yet with the pretty town of Castelnau Montratier nearby, where we could buy all that we needed, and enjoy the market and restaurants. The house is very spacious, clean, well maintained and furnished and fully equipped - the owners have thought of everything, and were extremely helpful in providing us with information before our visit, and with local honey, wine and home-made marmalade on our arrival. The beds were comfortable and the bathrooms of a high standard. We were a family party of 12, ranging in age from 2 to 72 and we all had a wonderful time. The pool was a real hit with the children, especially with the inflatables provided, and the 'quiet' terrace was a retreat for Grandad to write up his diary, or for our youngest son and his girlfriend to enjoy a romantic glass of wine together while our eldest prepared the barbecue. We ate all our meals on the large terrace near the kitchen, enjoying the beautiful views of sunflowers, watching the butterflies and listening to the crickets. It didn't matter how much noise we made - no-one could hear us! We swam in lakes and went canoeing at St Antonin-Noble-Val. We would most definitely recommend this property to friends and relatives, and would love to return again ourselves.

delightful and spacious farmhouse

  • 5 of 5

The farmhouse provides very comfortable and spacious accommmodation set in beautiful surrounding. We were a group of 8 including 2 small children and found the house was extremely well set up for us all. There is a good-sized pool and despite poorish weather we managed to make good use of it.

We would highly recommend this property.

A wonderful week at La Borde Basse!

  • 5 of 5

We spent a wonderfully relaxing week in this beautiful house. The house is very well equipped with everything you could need for a perfect holiday. The views from the house are spectacular and we loved watching the wildlife especially deer from the beautiful terrace where we ate most of our meals. We all enjoyed the lovely pool and spent many happy hours either in it or sunbathing next to it. The area around the house is a great place to explore with it's extensive grounds. We found the owners to be very thoughtful and ready to offer advice and share their knowledge of the area. we would have no hesitation in recommending La Borde Basse for a really relaxing and comfortable holiday.

La Borde Basse

  • 5 of 5

Excellent and most comfortable property in unspoilt countryside with outstanding views.Perfect peace and quiet but with the village nearby able to meet all requirements.Every possible facility has been provided and there excellent arrangements for eating outside. The pool is a special feature, safe, sheltered from the wind and providing shaded and unshaded areas. This, and the games room is. particularly good for children. As a familygroup ranging in age from 3 to 70 we could not have asked for any thing better.

La Borde Basse is roughly 8 hours driving time from the western Channel ports and one or two hours more from Calais or Dunkirk. The nearest airports are Toulouse (1.25 hrs) and Bergerac (1.5 hrs), Bordeaux and Carcassonne both being about 2.5 hrs drive. Detailed directions can be provided from any port or airport. Trains to Cahors from Paris (Gare d'Austerlitz) take about 5 hrs, and from Toulouse about 1 hr.

The village of Castelnau-Montratier, with its three windmills and pretty arcaded central square, is 4 km away. It has everything you might need from day to day, including a small supermarket, chemist, bank, and post office. The city of Cahors with its famous bridge and more extensive shopping, including weekly markets, is 24km to the NE.

Further Details:

The southern Lot is a mainly agricultural area where life is relatively gentle. There is plenty to see and do locally. For children: riding 10 mins away, go-karting 20 minutes away, boat trips and canoeing on the Lot at Cahors, water sports on the lake at Molieres (20 mins SW), underground cave systems about 1 hr north, and much more. Markets: Castelnau-Montratier has a small market every Sunday morning and a local food producers' market on Wednesday evenings in July/August. There is a much bigger market in Cahors every Wednesday and Saturday. Restaurants: While the area is not bristling with Michelin stars you can eat perfectly well locally. There are two cafe/bistros in the 'place' in C-M plus a hotel/restaurant. There are other restaurants in the area, including a very good 'ferme-auberge' (meals on the farm, using their own produce) about 20 mins away. There is a larger selection of restaurants in Cahors and Montauban, both about 25 mins away.
